“Hey, Luca, have you been avoiding me?”
On the eve of the movie premiere, Scarlett arrived at the small town of Cannes.
Luca met her at the hotel where he was staying. "Scarlett, why would you say that?"
“Hmph, I tried to meet you several times in Los Angeles, but you kept saying you were busy. Isn’t that avoiding me?”
Scarlett pressed her hand against his chest, pushing him up against the wall.
Luca shook his head, holding her hand, “I was really busy during that time. Between filming and preparing for the movie’s release, I had no time for dates.”
“Excuses, all excuses. You’re just avoiding me.”
Scarlett tilted her head up, staring into his eyes.
“Fine, I was avoiding you.”
Luca shrugged. “Scarlett, you know I’m a magnet for rumors. If anyone sees us together, the gossip will be everywhere. Aren’t you worried your boyfriend will misunderstand?”
“Not at all! What’s a little gossip? Haven’t you already been the subject of countless rumors these past few years? What’s the harm in adding one more girlfriend to the list? Or are you trying to be a good guy now and stay out of scandals?”
Scarlett laughed.
“Yes, that’s exactly what I’m trying to do. I’ve had too many scandals, and people think I’m a playboy, calling me a jerk. Now I want to change my image and get rid of that label.”
“Is that even possible?”
Scarlett poked his chest with a playful smile. “Last time, someone slept with me, then snuck off the next morning without saying a word. If that got out, what do you think people would call that guy?”
“Last time? You dare bring up last time?!”
Luca grabbed her fingers. “You took advantage of me being drunk and dragged me to bed. I didn’t call the police out of friendship.”
“The police? Haha! What would you tell them? That I assaulted you?”
Scarlett laughed so hard her face turned red.
“Isn’t that what happened? I was drunk that night, didn’t remember a thing. When I woke up the next morning, I realized what had happened. What was I supposed to do, give you a good morning kiss?”
“Haha, liar. Were you really drunk? If you were that drunk, how did you have such a strong reaction?”
Scarlett bit her lip and gestured downward.
“I was drunk, not dead. How could I not react?”
“Haha, sounds like you’ve got a lot of pent-up frustration. How about I get myself drunk tonight and let you have your way with me?”
Scarlett licked her red lips.
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I…”
Scarlett suddenly remembered something, her face turning pale, then bright red. “Let’s make it clear first—there are some things we can’t do, or I’ll get hurt.”
Luca chuckled, glancing at his watch. “The premiere is about to start. You’d better get ready.”
“Alright, wait for me!”
Scarlett gave him a quick kiss on the lips before turning and walking out of the room.
After Scarlett left, other key members of the crew like Matthew Goode and Emily Mortimer arrived in Cannes.
Luca took the chance to catch up with old friends.
“Luca, you’re really something now. You’re an actor, producer, and a famous screenwriter. Are you trying to be a one-man show?”
Matthew hugged him and gave his shoulder a playful slap.
Luca sensed a bit of envy in Matthew’s gesture and smiled. “Acting is still my main job. The other stuff is just on the side. I got lucky a few times, that’s all.”
“Just lucky?”
Matthew shook his head. “I thought you were being humble, but that last sentence totally gave you away. Your ‘humility’ is just showing off in disguise.”
“Alright, no more pretending. I really do want to be a one-man show. My dream is to sweep the Oscars—Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Screenplay. If there’s a chance, I want to try for all of them.”
Luca boasted shamelessly.
“Impressive! You’re my idol!”
Matthew gave him a thumbs up.
“Luca, did I hear you say you want to win Best Director at the Oscars? You want to direct too?”
Director Woody Allen, who had just finished a phone call, sat down at the coffee table.
“Yes, I’ve been thinking about it. Recently, YouTube held a short film competition, with a grand prize of one million dollars. I’m thinking of giving it a shot.”
Luca took a sip of his coffee.
“YouTube? I know that site—it’s pretty cool.”
Matthew nodded in approval.
“A short film competition? What’s the theme?”
Woody Allen asked, intrigued.
“Any genre is allowed as long as the film is under 30 minutes. The creator retains all the rights, and the deadline for submission is May 1st next year. The entries will be judged by YouTube members and a professional panel.”
Luca explained the competition in more detail, though he didn’t mention his connection to the platform, speaking from the perspective of an outsider.
“Director Allen, are you interested in participating?”
“It sounds fun. If I have time, I might join in,” Woody Allen said.
“Luca, is it really a million dollars?”
Matthew asked.
“Yep.”
“Sounds tempting, but I don’t know how to make movies.”
“I don’t either, but you can always learn.”
Luca encouraged.
“What are you guys talking about?”
Emily Mortimer walked into the café, lifting the hem of her dress. She had just changed into a stylish, elegant pink dress with a British vibe—simple, yet classy.
“Emily, you look beautiful!”
“Emily, you’re definitely going to be the star of the red carpet tonight.”
Luca and Matthew competed to shower her with compliments.
Emily smiled slightly. “A few compliments are fine, but don’t go overboard. I worry that when Scarlett comes down, you won’t have any words left to flatter her. She’s the industry’s recognized bombshell, after all.”
“That doesn’t matter. You and Scarlett have different styles. You’re the epitome of British elegance—simple, casual, and graceful. Scarlett is more American—sexy and fiery. I bet she’ll be wearing something incredibly sexy.”
Luca confidently declared.
“No need to bet. If you say so, then it must be true.”
“Haha, yeah. You clearly know what Scarlett will be wearing.”
Matthew and Emily joked.
“What are you guys talking about?”
Luca asked.
“Haha, nothing.”
Matthew and Emily chuckled.
“I’m ready. Can we leave now?”
Scarlett appeared, wearing a floor-length white lace gown with a ribbon cinching her slim waist and hips. Her shoulders and arms were completely bare, and a lot of her chest was exposed—undeniably sexy.
“Wow, Scarlett, you look absolutely stunning and sexy. Every guy at the event is going to howl when they see you.”
Matthew rubbed his nose and loudly complimented her.
“Yes, she’s gorgeous. Luca, looks like you were right.”
Emily winked at him with a smile.
“What did you guess just now?”
Scarlett asked.
“You can ask him.”
Emily laughed.
“I just guessed that someone holding Scarlett’s hand on the red carpet would definitely be the envy of every man in the world. Miss Scarlett, would I be lucky enough to be that guy?”
Luca raised his arm.
“Why not?”
Scarlett smiled and took his arm.
After everyone gathered—Woody Allen and his wife, Luca with Scarlett, Matthew, Emily, and the other key crew members—they all got into cars and headed towards the Palais des Festivals in Cannes, basking in the sun and sea breeze.

Chapter 387: You Are the Only Dish on My Menu
The Palais des Festivals is the main venue for the Cannes Film Festival, located on the most beautiful beach in Cannes. It has six floors, with 25 cinemas and screening rooms. The largest auditorium has more than 1,000 seats, and even the smallest one has dozens of seats. Every year, it can accommodate over 100,000 movie enthusiasts and tourists.
Today, Match Point is having its premiere here, which also serves as the opening ceremony of the film festival.
In the afternoon, the beach where the Palais des Festivals is located was bustling with people—over 40 film crews participating in the festival, numerous invited European and American stars, hundreds of media reporters, and thousands of film fans and tourists.
Everyone poured into the Palais des Festivals, from the entrance to the hall, packed with people shoulder to shoulder, creating a chaotic and noisy scene.
“Cannes is livelier than other film festivals,” Scarlett commented, looking at the crowd from the car window as it slowly moved forward near the entrance of the Palais des Festivals.
“Yes, most of these people are here for the excitement.”
Cannes is a tourist city, and the period from June to October happens to be the peak tourist season. Tourists who come here also happen to encounter the film festival, so of course, they want to join the fun. To tourists, the film festival feels more like a free party.
As they arrived at the entrance, Luca straightened his collar. Today, he was wearing a casual black suit with a white shirt underneath. Due to the warm weather, he didn’t wear a tie, leaving two buttons undone for a more relaxed look.
“Luca, you look so cool. Other women must be jealous seeing me with you,” Scarlett said with a smile, gazing at him.
“They won’t be. I’m not exactly a good guy. What’s there to be jealous of?”
“Haha, you’re not a woman, so you don’t understand. Women may marry good men, but they always think about the bad ones. Take me, for instance—I’ve always had a crush on you.”
“A crush? You mean you’ve had your eyes on me.”
“Haha, okay, I admit it. But so what? Would you crave something you didn’t like?” Scarlett teased, tracing her finger along his chest. “I’m craving you right now. What should I do?”
“What do you think?”
“Well…”
“Stop it. Director Allen is getting out of the car; we should go too.”
“OK, I’ll wait until tonight then!”
At the entrance to the red carpet, Director Allen and his wife stepped onto the carpet, immediately drawing a flurry of camera clicks from the gathered media.
The second car stopped, and Luca got out first, holding the door for Scarlett. Together, they stepped onto the red carpet. They were both impeccably dressed—Luca, the famous global heartthrob, and Scarlett, the ultimate bombshell. Their appearance together made the crowd go wild.
All the photographers turned their cameras toward them, taking rapid shots as the clicking of shutters filled the air.
“Luca! Scarlett! Can you move to the center a bit?” a photographer called out, struggling to get a clear shot from the back.
Luca smiled and exchanged a glance with Scarlett, and they moved to the center, striking a few poses for the cameras.
“Luca! Scarlett! Can you get a little closer?” another cheeky photographer shouted.
“Luca, should we?” Scarlett smirked playfully.
“No way. I don’t want to get beaten up by your boyfriend.”
“Such a coward!”
They waved to the crowd and continued walking forward.
“Luca, why do you always bring up my boyfriend? Are you jealous of him? If you don’t like it, I could break up with him,” Scarlett said with a smile that betrayed no hint of emotion.
“Uh… what do you mean by that?” Luca tightened his grip on her hand.
“I mean, I love you more,” Scarlett said, greeting fans and reporters as they walked.
“Love? Wasn’t it just craving earlier? How did it turn into love?”
“Haha, it’s simple. If I crave a dish, I’ll want to eat it again. That’s liking it. But if I want to eat it every day, that’s love. I love you, Luca, because I want to have you every day.”
“Every day?” Luca raised an eyebrow. “You have someone at home. Why think about me?”
“It’s different. Before I met you, I thought all men were the same. But after meeting you, I realized how different men could be. You’re perfect—handsome, funny, gentle, elegant, and strong. You satisfy every fantasy I have about men.”
“That’s a bit much. Am I really that great?”
“Of course! You don’t know how amazing you are because you’re not a woman. You’re like a dream dish—once I’ve tasted you, every other man becomes bland in comparison. You’re addictive. I’m hooked.”
Scarlett clung tightly to his arm.
“If I’m a drug, you should quit early. Too much of me isn’t good for you.”
“I’d like to quit, but how? Do any of your ex-girlfriends seem like they’ve quit you?”
“Well… maybe they’ll quit eventually.”
“Maybe. But I’ll need your help. Maybe after I’ve had enough, I’ll get tired of you and quit. Can you help me with that?”
“Of course. We’re friends, aren’t we?”
“Haha, thank you, darling!”
Scarlett pressed her chest against his arm, prompting another burst of camera flashes.
“Luca! Scarlett!” Matthew and Emily approached.
“Shall we take a picture together?” Luca asked.
“Sure!”
The four stood in a row for another round of photos. Scarlett and Emily stood in the middle, with Luca and Matthew on either side, and the photographers went wild again.
After taking the group photo, the four of them continued walking, catching up with Director Allen and his wife, Ms. Song. The six of them took a few more group shots together.
They also answered a few brief questions during a press interview. When asked about working with Scarlett, Luca smiled and said it was a pleasant experience. When asked about his relationship with Scarlett on set, Luca casually replied that they were all friends, including Matthew and Emily.
The reporters tried to stir up rumors, but Luca wasn’t giving them anything.
After the interview, the next group of actors arrived. The Match Point team left the red carpet and entered the screening hall on the first floor.
This screening room had 800 seats and was one of the festival’s main venues.
Because of Director Woody Allen’s fame, Match Point was invited to be the first film screened on the opening day.
As they entered the screening hall, it was already more than half full, occupied by members of other film crews, including Princess Raccoon, Three Times, Merry Christmas, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, and A Bittersweet Life.
These crews came from over 20 countries and regions, with many familiar faces from Asia.
“Li Bing, look, that’s Luca!” a fresh-faced Chinese actress exclaimed excitedly from the side.
Luca glanced over—it was a familiar face, none other than Ms. Gao Yuanyuan from the Shanghai Dreams crew.
“Luca? That womanizing jerk who hooked up with Britney?” a single-lidded young man next to her sneered.
“Don’t say that! They’re just good friends.”
“Hah, and you believe that?”
“I do! I’m a fan of Luca. He’s so handsome, especially in a suit!” Gao blushed.
“Fangirl. Why don’t you go ask for his autograph then? What, you’re shy?”
“Of course, I’m shy! But maybe you’re right… Ah, Luca just smiled at me! Could he understand Chinese?”
Blushing, Gao giggled.
“You’ve been staring at him for so long, practically eyeing him like a piece of meat. Even a blind man would notice.”
“Nonsense! I wasn’t!”
Feeling embarrassed, Gao shifted her attention to others around her.
Luca chuckled and followed Director Allen to the front row, sitting in the middle of the third row, just ahead of the Shanghai Dreams crew.
“Nervous, Luca?” Matthew asked from beside him.
“Nervous? About what?”
“The movie. It’s the premiere today. Aren’t you worried about the box office or reviews?”
“Not at all. With Director Allen, both the box office and reviews are in good hands. Why worry?” Luca shrugged.
Looking at Director Allen next to them, Matthew gave a thumbs-up. “You’ve got a way with words!”
Luca smiled, then started chatting with Scarlett and Director Allen about the film.
Today’s premiere was a small one, with the film opening in just eight cinemas across four countries to gauge the audience's reaction before determining a broader release.
By 3 p.m., the red carpet ceremony was over, and guests filled the screening hall. Shortly after the opening remarks, Match Point officially began screening.

*Chapter 388: Miss Gao is Embarrassed*
“Nora! I was looking for you. What are you doing here?”
“I’m not in a good mood. I wanted to take a walk by myself!”
“I don’t mean to bother you. Is there anything I can do to help?”
“I feel like having a drink!”
“I like the you after a drink; you become so carefree and confident.”
“Really? But I don’t think that’s a good thing, and you shouldn’t have followed me out.”
“Do you feel guilty?”
“What about you?”
On the screen, Luca and Scarlett stood in the pouring rain, both wearing thin clothes that were soaked, clinging to their bodies, revealing their sexy figures.
Luca wrapped his arm around Scarlett’s waist, pulling her into his embrace. Their bodies pressed tightly together, and beneath Scarlett’s arm, a hint of sensuality was revealed.
Luca lowered his head and dominantly kissed her red lips.
“Wow~ Kissing in the rain by the wheat fields, so romantic,” whispered a girl from the back row, Miss Gao.
“What’s so special about that? The next time it rains, you can ask your boyfriend to kiss you by the wheat fields.”
“How can that be the same? The focus here is on Luca. He’s so handsome that even kissing him in a graveyard would feel romantic!”
“You’ve got some strange tastes!”
The guy next to her was speechless.
“Oh~ It’s a passionate scene! So intense. Luca’s body is so sexy, with those defined muscles. The girl acting with him is so lucky!”
“Yuan Yuan, could you keep it down? Luca’s sitting right in front of us,” said Director Wang, touching his forehead.
“What are you worried about? Luca doesn’t understand us. Okay, okay, I’ll stop.”
The girl quieted down.
“Could you stop swallowing loudly?”
“It’s not me; it’s Li Bing. He’s drooling the moment he sees Scarlett.”
“No, no, it wasn’t me!”
“Alright, both of you, behave yourselves. We’re abroad; don’t embarrass us.”
“Got it!”
Things finally quieted down behind them.
“Darling, shall we try this scene ourselves sometime?” Scarlett whispered.
“Sure, but where can we find a wheat field?”
“That’s easy. When I go back, I’ll plant some on my estate.”
“Haha, I’m looking forward to it!”
Luca smiled and held her hand.
The movie continued, and the audience quietly watched, though the atmosphere became more charged during every intimate scene.
“Director Allen, weren’t there fewer love scenes in the script?” Luca asked as he watched the screen.
Compared to his memory of the original version, there were more intimate scenes, and even the existing ones had extended shots. He wasn’t sure if this was the butterfly effect or if the original had been edited down.
“Yes, but some of the shots were too beautiful to cut, so I increased their weight,” Director Allen replied with a grin.
“They are beautiful, but won’t the film get an R-rating in the U.S.?”
“It doesn’t matter; this movie is meant for adults anyway. Younger audiences wouldn’t understand it,” Director Allen shrugged.
Luca nodded. Allen’s films often discussed philosophy, life, and big ideas that younger viewers indeed wouldn’t grasp.
“We can try this scene tonight,” Scarlett whispered again.
Luca chuckled. Just as he was about to respond, he overheard someone behind them talking.
“Yuan Yuan, look, those two are so close. There must be something going on.”
“Are you jealous?”
“Jealous? What does this have to do with me?”
“Haha, if it doesn’t, why are you staring at them so intently? Are you jealous of Luca?”
“Stop talking nonsense. I just want to tell you that your beloved Luca is a total player. I heard his official girlfriend is a supermodel, and he’s had unclear relationships with Britney and Aniston, and now he’s flirting with Scarlett. Do you still like him?”
“Of course! My love for Luca started with his looks and deepened with his talent. He’s been a professional athlete, can write songs and scripts, and his acting is top-notch. He’s super handsome and talented. Do you know any man who’s better?”
“Sigh~ You’ve got it bad!”
“Haha, I’m happy!”
Bang!
The movie reached a part where Luca grabbed a shotgun, killed an innocent old lady, and then shot Scarlett.
“Ah! He’s turned evil!” Miss Gao exclaimed.
“Haha, do you still like him now that he’s gone dark?”
“I do! He looks so cool when he’s killing people!”
“You… you’re hopeless!”
The guy next to her gave up and fell silent.
Aside from them, the audience also began whispering after the lead’s descent into darkness.
“This guy even killed his own child. What a monster.”
“Luca’s acting is incredible!”
“Yeah, he really nailed the role of this scumbag.”
“Director Allen sure knows how to cast. Luca was the perfect choice for this role.”
“I heard Luca’s a player in real life too. Could this be him playing himself?”
Luca’s face darkened. It was just a role in a movie—why connect it to real life?
“Don’t worry, Luca. No matter what people say, you’ve portrayed the character brilliantly,” Director Allen said.
“Thanks, Director Allen. Did you cast me for this role because people called me a player and you thought I fit the part?”
“Of course not! Don’t overthink it,” Director Allen waved dismissively, focusing back on the movie.
Luca had a feeling he wasn’t being entirely honest.
“You did a fantastic job, Luca,” Scarlett whispered.
“You were even better. It’s a shame the film didn’t premiere earlier, or you could’ve won an award at Cannes.”
“It’s fine. I heard Director Allen is aiming for the Oscars. Maybe you’ll get a nomination.”
Luca shook his head. “You might have a chance, but as a Brazilian, I think it’ll take me a few more years of hard work to get a nomination.”
“No matter. I’ll be with you, cheering you on.”
“Thanks!”
Clap clap clap~
The movie ended, and the audience erupted into enthusiastic applause. Many people stood up, clapping.
Luca stood up too, joining in.
Led by Director Allen, the cast and crew walked to the front, thanking the audience.
“Luca, this movie is really great. Congratulations on playing another iconic role!” said Zhang Ziyi, wearing a cheongsam, as she approached him. She had come to Cannes with the cast of The Tale of Princess Racoon.
“Thanks, Zhang. When does your film screen?”
“Tomorrow afternoon. Are you coming?”
“Maybe. I need to check my schedule.”
“Alright, if you come, give me a call.”
“I will!”
Luca smiled softly.
“Hi, Mr. Kelly. It’s such a pleasure to meet you. I’m your fan from China. Could you sign an autograph for me?” Miss Gao, spotting a moment, walked over, her English a bit shaky.
Luca smiled gently. “Miss Gao, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve seen your film Beijing Bicycle, right? It’s a very good movie.”
“Ah~” Miss Gao froze, covering her mouth in shock. “You… you speak Chinese?”
“No, just that one sentence.”
“That’s two sentences!” Miss Gao covered her cheeks, realizing all the things she had said earlier—about kissing him in a graveyard, how lucky the girls acting with him were, how her admiration for him started with his looks and deepened with his talent—he had heard it all! How embarrassing!
“Miss Gao, I only know a few phrases in Chinese, and my listening skills are nonexistent, so you don’t need to worry about me overhearing your conversation,” Luca said slowly in English.
Miss Gao rolled her eyes, handing him her notebook. “Mr. Kelly, could you please sign an autograph?”
“Of course, it would be my pleasure.”
Luca took the notebook and signed it, adding a short message.
“Thank you!”
Miss Gao looked at the signature, smiling. “Mr. Kelly, your Chinese is quite good. Will you come to China to promote your films?”
“Yes, China is a country I’ve always wanted to visit. I’ll definitely go.”
“Great! If you come to China, I’ll pick you up from the airport.”
“Haha, thanks. It’s a deal then.”
Luca chuckled. They exchanged phone numbers, agreeing that if Miss Gao visited the U.S., he would pick her up from the airport, and if he went to China, she would do the same.
After chatting a bit more, Miss Gao happily left with her notebook.
Luca smiled to himself. Now he had two celebrity guides. When he eventually visited China, who would he choose as his guide? Ah, what a delightful problem!
“Luca, congratulations. You were amazing!” another guest congratulated him.
“Thank you!”
As Match Point finished screening, several filmmakers came up to talk, and Luca engaged with each of them.
After a while, the second non-competition film, Joyeux Noël, began to play, and the screening room fell silent once more.
(End of the chapter.)
*Chapter 389: From Now on, the King Will No Longer Attend Court*
"The best work by Woody Allen in the past decade — Match Point"
The next day, Le Journal de France headlined its culture section with a report on Woody Allen's new film Match Point.
The report stated, “Compared to his previous films, Match Point departs from Allen’s usual first-person humor and adopts an objective, third-person narrative. At the film's opening, Allen uses a slow-motion sequence with an allegorical feel to convey the central theme: everything depends on luck and chance.
After watching the entire film, one can’t help but think of Hitchcock’s thrillers, Dreiser’s An American Tragedy, and Allen’s earlier film Crimes and Misdemeanors.
This melancholic film sheds Allen's personal style, achieving a breakthrough and creating a classic."
While praising director Woody Allen and Match Point, actors like Luca and Scarlett also received various levels of recognition.
In its film review, Le Journal Express praised Luca, saying, “In Match Point, Luca plays a man full of ambition, favored by fortune. He strives to climb the social ladder through his wife, but can't resist the allure of his mistress, Nola. Torn between the two women, he ultimately takes a dangerous risk and murders his lover and child.
By sheer luck, the detective investigating the case is too careless, allowing him to escape legal punishment.
It appears to be a victory, but in the end, he’s haunted by nightmares, and the torment will stay with him for the rest of his life.
Compared to his previous roles, Luca’s character this time is far more complex, worldly yet pretending to be virtuous, always wearing a mask in his interactions with friends, family, and lovers. His internal struggles are difficult to portray convincingly.
But Luca succeeds. His breakthrough performance captivated audiences, and he crafted a classic movie character. His acting, especially in the murder scene, was exceptional and added a lot to the film."
Cannes Cinema Daily also wrote in its review, “This is Luca’s best film since his debut — Match Point. His acting has improved noticeably.
Compared to the youthful awkwardness in Honey Dance, the innocence in Mean Girls, the raw intensity in The Notebook, and the striking performance in Buried, his style in this film has matured. His performance has more depth, and he knows how to showcase himself appropriately. His future growth is something to look forward to."
In addition to these two reviews, other newspapers such as France Star, England Evening, and Germany Mirror also featured critiques of his performance.
Most praised him for his significant acting breakthrough and more stable style. They noted that in previous films, Luca was just a pretty face with immature acting. It wasn't until Buried that he began to shed that image, revealing deeper talent.
By Match Point, it seems he’s found his stride, knowing how to express himself and play to his strengths.
Beyond the praise, many entertainment papers focused on the film's steamy scenes. Both actors are attractive and well-built, and during filming, they showcased their sensuality to the fullest. The passionate scenes between them are beautiful and a major highlight of the film.
Critics have called them the sexiest young couple in entertainment, and their steamy scenes are one of the film’s biggest selling points.
“A bunch of pervs!”
Luca chuckled as he flipped through the paper in bed.
“Honey, are the papers full of compliments for you?”
Scarlett, wrapped in a blanket, snuggled closer to him.
“Not as much as you, darling. Look at The Star. They say Scarlett Johansson is breathtakingly beautiful, and your performance as Nola was a revelation.
Express said Scarlett was seductive and charming, the sex symbol of her generation. Someone even said they wanted to drink your bathwater.”
“Huh, drink my bathwater? Where did they write that?”
Scarlett was shocked.
“I just saw it, can’t remember which paper. Some minor celebrity told the media you’re so beautiful that after watching the film, he’s obsessed with you and wants to kiss your feet and drink your bathwater.”
“Haha, is he a creep?”
Luca laughed lightly, reminded of a certain NBA player named Du.
“Probably. You’re getting more famous, and your reputation as a sex symbol is growing. If you ever want to make some extra cash, you could sell your bathwater online, and plenty of people would buy it.”
“I’d never do that. Who knows what creeps would do with it?”
“Obviously, they’d drink it.”
“Haha, that’s gross.”
Scarlett smiled and pointed at the paper. “The reviews only mention how beautiful and sexy I am. Don’t they praise my acting?”
“Oh, of course, they do. Lots of them. Look at these: they say you’re the highlight of the film, shining under Allen’s direction, almost glowing, and that you completely outshine Luca.”
“Really?”
Scarlett beamed and stretched out her arms, not caring that she was exposing herself.
“Do you have to be that excited?”
“Of course! You’re so talented, so if I’m beating you, that means I’ve really made it. Of course, I’m thrilled!”
Scarlett happily held the paper, reading the reviews and joking about sending a reward to the critics.
Luca chuckled and glanced at his watch. It was already 8:30.
“Shall we get up? There are a lot of films showing today, and the festival hall is going to be lively.”
“Alright!”
Scarlett put down the paper, her eyes falling back on Luca as he got out of bed to pick up his underwear and pajamas. His muscular body and sexy lines made her swoon.
“Ah~”
“What’s wrong?”
“Honey, my legs are sore. I can’t get up. Come help me.”
Scarlett pouted, tapping her legs.
“How about I carry you out of bed?”
Luca teased, extending his arms.
“Sure!”
Scarlett suddenly jumped up, pouncing on him and knocking him back onto the bed, her arms wrapped around his neck and legs around his waist, passionately kissing him.
“Stop it, aren’t we going to watch movies?”
Luca patted her back, laughing.
“Forget it. How about we have an overtime session instead?”
“You sure?”
“Not up for it?”
“Heh, woman, you’ve successfully provoked me!”
With a bang, the alarm clock on the nightstand fell over. When they set it back up, the time read 10:20.
“It’s already past 10.”
Luca shook his head. “Beauty is a dangerous distraction. The ancients were right.”
He felt a little guilty, thinking about how his morning routine of working out and reading had been completely derailed. Half a day wasted in bed wasn’t how he planned things.
He called out to Scarlett a few times, but she was still peacefully sleeping, not wanting to get up.
Luca smiled, kissed her on the cheek, and stretched his sore back as he left the bedroom to practice some Brazilian jiu-jitsu to loosen up.
(End of Chapter)
*Chapter 390: Luca is Stealing Our Cheese Again*
"Luca, wake up!"
It was noon, and the sun was shining brightly. At the outdoor beach restaurant in front of the hotel, Director Woody Allen put down his newspaper and smiled at him.
"Uh, good afternoon, Director Allen!"
Luca came over with his plate to eat breakfast, not expecting the director to still be at the restaurant. He set his plate down and sat across from him.
"Good afternoon, Luca. You don’t look so well."
Director Allen smirked with an ambiguous smile.
Luca felt the need to explain, "Uh, Director Allen, don’t misunderstand—"
"Haha, no need to say it, I get it, I get it. You’re young, after all, haha~" Director Allen chuckled.
Luca tugged at the corner of his mouth, feeling no need to explain further. After all, they were both, in a sense, notorious playboys.
"Director Allen, have the box office numbers from last night's premiere come out?" he asked while eating seafood.
"Yes, we made $390,000 on the first day."
"$390,000~ Not a bad start!"
Eight theaters raked in $390,000, which meant each theater made around $48,000. That was quite an impressive number.
"Director Allen, the test screenings did really well. When is the distributor planning to expand the release?"
"It’s already set. Today, we’ve expanded to over 2,600 theaters for a wider release. In the next few days, we need to ramp up the promotion."
"Got it!"
Luca nodded. He remembered that Match Point had grossed over $23 million domestically in the U.S., but he wasn’t sure how it had performed in Europe.
However, since Director Allen's films usually performed better in Europe due to their European flair, this one should be no exception.
"Luca, the newspaper says you're preparing to collaborate with Director Nolan, starring as the lead in his new film. Is it The Prestige?"
Director Allen set down his newspaper and took a sip of coffee.
"Yes, I’m interested, but the final audition hasn't happened yet. Even if I pass, I won’t be the lead; I’ll be the second male lead. Director Nolan plans to invite Christian Bale as the lead."
"Bale? He’s definitely a great actor. Going head-to-head with him will be tough, but no worries—you’re someone who thrives under pressure."
Director Allen grinned, "Last time on set, your performance was impressive. The more pressure I put on you, the better you performed. You’ll definitely pull through this time too."
"I don’t know, but I’ll do my best."
Luca glanced at Director Allen’s newspaper. It was an issue of The Hollywood Reporter from a few days ago.
The article was about him, briefly outlining the success he’d achieved this year.
From the solid performance of Infernal Affairs (Brazilian version) at the start of the year to starring in Charlize Theron’s new film North Country, then the box-office explosion of Step Up, the wrap-up of Little Miss Sunshine, a supporting role in the big-budget film The Departed, and now the promising performance of Match Point.
This year, his rise had been meteoric, establishing him as one of the fastest-growing and most high-profile new actors in Hollywood. He was also seen as one of the most valuable male stars of the new generation.
The report also revealed his interactions with Director Nolan, saying he was actively seeking the lead role in Nolan's new film and stood a good chance of landing it.
If he secured this role, he could potentially break into the ranks of A-list stars within the next year or two, making him one of the fastest to achieve this status as a foreign actor in Hollywood.
Reading this, Luca frowned. Though the article seemed objective on the surface, it actually felt like it was setting him up for backlash.
Hollywood’s resources were limited, and if one person consumed too much, others would go hungry. Seeing someone else thriving while they starved was sure to stir resentment.
This year, he had already grabbed a lot of opportunities, drawing envious eyes.
Now the article was essentially signaling to other actors: “Heads up, Luca’s about to grab another piece of the pie, so make sure to keep an eye on him.”
Luca sighed. He hadn’t even landed the role yet, and this kind of news was already stirring trouble—not a good sign.
He picked up his phone and sent a message to Ed, asking about the Hollywood Reporter article and whether the company had orchestrated some PR behind it.
A moment later, Ed replied, saying no. The company had only handled PR after that earlier news broke about him and Leonardo, and nothing else had been done recently.
Luca smirked, then sent another message to remind Ed to pay attention to reviews now that Match Point was expanding across America. The company should keep an eye on how the U.S. critics were responding to both the film and his lead performance.
Ed said he understood.
"Good afternoon, Director Allen!"
Scarlett Johansson entered, bringing with her a fragrant breeze. Her white camisole hugged her curves, and her silk shorts accentuated her full figure. Her blonde hair, with slight curls, cascaded over her shoulders, and her face glowed with charm.
The men nearby couldn’t help but turn their heads for a glance—or several.
"Scarlett, you look absolutely stunning today. I’d say even Helen of Troy couldn’t compare."
Director Allen complimented her.
"Haha, am I really that beautiful?"
Scarlett, pleased with her look today, smiled and sat down next to Luca.
"Luca, I brought you two oysters. They’re freshly caught from the sea, huge, and super fresh. Have a few more."
Scarlett placed the two large oysters on his plate.
"Thanks, I’ve already had two."
"Have a few more, it’s no problem. You worked hard last night."
"Pff~"
Director Allen, expressionless, looked at the two of them. "Are you two trying to stir up some gossip? If you do, the film might sell a few more million tickets."
"Haha, sure, I don’t mind!" Scarlett flipped her hair and laughed.
"No way, I haven’t even shaken off my bad-boy reputation yet. I can’t afford another scandal. If I get caught up in another one, no one’s going to watch my movies anymore."
Luca slurped the oyster and added.
"It’s fine. In this movie, you’re playing a total scumbag anyway. If a scandal breaks, I’ll just say you got too into character and couldn’t separate fact from fiction.
You can step forward and say that this role had a profound impact on you, and you regret taking it. Tell people that from now on, you’re committed to being a better person.
If the audience buys it, you can shake off the bad-boy image. What do you think?" Director Allen teased.
Clap, clap~
"Director Allen, that’s brilliant! Let’s do that!" Scarlett clapped her hands in agreement.
"Please, I’ve never regretted taking this role."
He raised his glass with a smile. "Director Allen, I’ve learned a lot from working with you. I hope we get to collaborate again."
"Haha, there will be opportunities."
Director Allen smiled and clinked his glass.
"I’m in too!" Scarlett smiled cheerfully and joined the toast.
"Scarlett, perfect timing! The Prestige is casting. Did you know?"
Luca opened the newspaper and pointed to the news about Nolan’s new film.
"No, I’ve been filming The Black Dahlia lately, and the company hasn’t said anything. Is there a role for me?"
Scarlett asked.
"Try out for it. The lead female character is a magician’s assistant—a very sexy role. It’s perfect for you."
"How do you know? Have you seen the script?"
"Haha, I’m one of the screenwriters."
"Really?"
Scarlett looked surprised.
"You’ll know when you get the script."
"Great! I’m going to land that role. Will you help me?"
Scarlett leaned against his shoulder, asking affectionately.
Luca nodded. "I’ll recommend you to Director Nolan because no one fits the part better than you."
"Thank you, darling!"
"Ahem~"
Across from them, Director Allen, clearly fed up with their flirting, decided to leave. At 70-something years old, he was too old for this kind of thing.
"You two carry on, I’m going for a walk by the beach."
"Alright!"
"Don’t forget, there’s an event at the festival palace later."
"Got it!"
