**Chapter 21: S-Rank Technique – [Shadow Clone Technique]! (Happy Labor Day Everyone)**

Nara Raku had successfully developed the [Lacquered Eye] technique.

It could be said to have completely freed the Nara Clan from relying on their "hands" while also lightening the clan's combat burden.

From Nara Shikano’s perspective, no matter what resources the clan invested in Nara Raku now, it wouldn't be excessive.

"Speaking of the clan elders..."

Nara Shikano stood up and said, "Raku, do you want to come with me later to meet them?"

Indeed, Nara Shikano had plans to gather the elders and hold a clan meeting.

But that was primarily because he had just returned from Konoha Village with important information from the Third Hokage.

The Third Kazekage from Sunagakure had gone missing, and the Third Great Ninja War, which was already on the verge of breaking out, had now found its "fuse."

It was only a matter of time before one of the great nations or ninja villages made the first move!

With war imminent, both Konoha and the Nara Clan needed to be fully prepared.

This clan meeting was being held for that very reason.

As the backbone of Konoha’s medical system, the Nara Clan had a mountain of responsibilities to face. The [Lacquered Eye] technique scroll provided by Nara Raku was, in a way, a blessing in disguise.

"Meet the elders?" Nara Raku shook his head. "If possible, I’d like to visit the Deer Whisper Pavilion first."

The Deer Whisper Pavilion was the Nara Clan's archive. It housed centuries' worth of medical and secret technique information gathered by the clan over the years.

"That’s a good idea," Nara Shikano nodded approvingly.

Raku was truly exceptional. How long had it been since a genius with such drive appeared in the Nara Clan?

Geniuses weren’t the scary part; what was scary was a genius who worked harder than anyone else.

'As long as Raku doesn’t fall prematurely, the Nara Clan might not catch up to the bloodline limit clans like the Senju, Uchiha, or Hyuga, but at least... we could stand on par with the Hozuki Clan from Kirigakure, right?'

Nara Shikano looked forward to Nara Raku's future even more.

"Aside from the scrolls in the Deer Whisper Pavilion, the clan will also reward you with a top-quality piece of chakra metal, perfect for forging shadow-based ninja tools."

Nara Shikano quickly issued a borrowing permit, ensuring Raku's access to the Pavilion wouldn’t be hindered.

"And there are also two ‘special rewards.’ Whether they benefit you depends on your fate and needs.

"I was planning to provide you with a monthly research fund of one million ryo, but considering your family situation, perhaps you wouldn’t care much for that small amount of money."

Now that's what you call an angel investor!

Nara Raku was a bit overwhelmed by the continuous stream of generous rewards from the clan leader.

But when he heard the last part, he couldn’t help but respond, "Clan Leader, will not spending money make you stronger?"

His words were so reasonable, there was no retort.

Nara Shikano nearly strained his back laughing at Nara Raku's comment.

For most people, being a ninja wasn’t a particularly expensive profession.

Kunai get broken? Need more soldier pills? Threw all your shuriken?

No worries—ninjas could endure it all. As long as their chakra reserves were intact, everything would be fine.

But for some specialized ninjas, their spending was so exorbitant that even printing more money couldn’t keep up with their expenses!

After Nara Shikano was silent for a moment, Raku quickly tried to salvage his crumbling dignity.

"Clan Leader, it’s not about the money. I just prefer the feeling of earning and spending my own money."

"...Oh, is that so?"

Nara Shikano suspected Raku might just be a little money-obsessed, but he had no proof.

"Well, I have another mission that might interest you.

"And it’s related to the ‘special rewards’ I just mentioned."

...

After bidding farewell to the clan leader, Nara Raku headed for the Deer Whisper Pavilion.

As for the "mission" mentioned, the clan leader had kept the details vague, only telling Raku to see him tomorrow morning.

‘I wonder what kind of mission it could be?’

On the way to the Pavilion, Nara Raku’s mind was racing.

'A new S-rank mission? That’s unlikely. For someone like me, a newly graduated genin, a B-rank mission would already be pushing it, and that's only because of Tsunade’s influence.'

‘And then there are the two "special rewards" the clan leader mentioned.’

‘What could the Nara Clan possibly give me? Money, secret techniques, medical knowledge, chakra metal—they’ve already given me almost everything!’

Unable to figure it out, Nara Raku decided to stop thinking about it.

‘A million ryo of personal research funds, and that chakra metal piece…’

Raku recalled the special incense stick gifted by Madam Cat.

‘Maybe I can ask her to help forge some ninja tools! I just hope she’s willing to do business...’

‘Though, before that, I’d better consult with the clan leader about my options. If there’s a better choice, I might have to part with that feline spirit.’

As he pondered how to allocate the funds, Raku arrived at the Deer Whisper Pavilion.

This wasn’t his first visit. He had been there before with the clan leader to study the “ancestral scrolls.”

Presenting the handwritten note from the clan leader, Raku was granted smooth entry.

Inside the Pavilion were countless books and scrolls—medical texts, pharmaceutical records, secret techniques, ninja insights—an extensive collection.

For now, Raku’s priority was to improve his strength.

Thanks to the [Lazy Ghost System], he could learn any ninja technique with just a single action.

Wasting no time after entering the Pavilion, Raku headed straight for the secret techniques section.

As a family with a long-standing tradition of secret shadow techniques, the Nara Clan had poured immense effort into developing a wide range of shadow-based techniques, each with a specific function.

In the secret techniques section, besides completed techniques, there were also study notes from clan predecessors, as well as research material on various incomplete shadow techniques.

Without delay, Nara Raku began learning everything in sight.

‘I’ve already mastered three family secret techniques, but there are many more to learn here!’

【Detected C-Rank Secret Technique: Shadow Neck Bind. Learn?】

【Detected C-Rank Secret Technique: Flat Shadow Technique. Learn?】

【...B-Rank Secret Technique: Shadow Shield Technique...】

【...B-Rank Secret Technique: Shadow Avatar Technique...】

【...A-Rank Secret Technique: Shadow Grasp Technique...】

Raku opted to learn them all.

A prompt appeared on his virtual panel.

【You have learned two C-Rank Secret Techniques, two B-Rank Secret Techniques, and one A-Rank Secret Technique. Your [Ninjutsu] and [Wisdom] attributes have increased! Overall evaluation improved!】

【Ninjutsu: B- → B+】

【Wisdom: B- → B】

【Overall Evaluation: C- → C+ (Chunin)】

‘The lazy ninja is truly ascending to greatness!’

Nara Raku set down the A-rank scroll, feeling elated.

‘And let’s not forget those two [Ninja Scrolls]!’

After completing the clan leader’s combat task, Raku had earned a C-rank scroll.

But now, a mere C-rank scroll wasn’t that exciting. What truly interested him was the S-rank [Ninja Scroll] he would get after completing the clan leader’s S-rank mission [Eye of Shadows]!

‘Let’s crack open this C-rank scroll first!’

Sitting in the Pavilion, Raku swiftly began.

‘Honored ancestors of the Nara Clan, watch over me!’

【Opening...】

【This C-rank Ninja Scroll contains: Technique】

【C-Rank Technique: Summoning Technique】

【Technique Description: A basic space-time ninjutsu technique】

【Technique Effect: Chakra is a force that connects two realms. After forming a contractual relationship with a summonable creature, tool, or puppet, you can summon it anytime, anywhere. The duration of the summoning depends on the amount of chakra used.】

【Technique Evaluation: "I choose you!"】

‘Wait, I didn’t mean to summon the ancestors of the Nara Clan!’

Raku found the [Summoning Technique] amusing, though the rarity of space-time ninjutsu made it a valuable technique.

‘Alright, next up—let’s open that S-rank scroll!’

【Opening...】

【This S-rank Ninja Scroll contains: Technique】

【S-Rank Technique: Shadow Clone Technique】

【Technique Description: An ultimate-level clone jutsu created by combining [Shadow Secret Techniques], [Clone Technique], and [Shadow Clone Technique]. It requires no hand signs and can be activated instantly.】

【Technique Effect: 1. Using yin chakra, create a [Shadow Clone] capable of switching between shadow form and physical form.
2. The clone possesses a degree of durability and can use all yin-based secret techniques. Its experience and memories will return to the original upon dispelling.
3. The clone resonates with the original’s yin chakra and can temporarily serve as the host for the original's consciousness.】

【Technique Evaluation: "My shadow alone is enough to defeat you."】

**Chapter 22: Strength Upgraded, [Special Jōnin]!**

"The first S-Rank jutsu I now possess: [Shadow Clone Technique]!"

Nara Raku gazed at his panel, feeling a surge of excitement and satisfaction.

But before he could fully explore the effects of the [Shadow Clone Technique], several new messages appeared on the panel:

- [You have learned the S-Rank jutsu [Shadow Clone Technique]. Your [Ninjutsu] and [Wisdom] attributes have been enhanced! Overall rating increased!]
- [Ninjutsu: B+ → A-]
- [Wisdom: B → B+]
- [Overall Rating: C+ → B- (Special Jōnin)]

"An S-Rank Yin-Release Ninjutsu developed from my family's secret techniques—this is a massive boost to my strength!"

Feeling his mental energy surging within him, Nara Raku was visibly pleased.

"If only my physical energy could keep up, my overall rating could increase even more."

He glanced at his [Ninjutsu], which had surpassed 10,000 points, and then at his [Precision], which was still in the double digits. Silently, he reached into his ninja pouch, pulled out a soldier pill, and popped it into his mouth.

- [Precision +10]

"And let's not forget that my [Taijutsu], [Strength], and [Speed] are still stuck at E-."

"My [Ninjutsu] and [Wisdom] are already high, and I’ve found a clear path to improve my [Precision]. I can now shift some of my focus to enhancing those other three attributes."

"I don't expect to hit the ceiling in Taijutsu, but I can't afford to let those attributes be such glaring weaknesses."

His current attribute panel resembled a mutated "Compass Warrior," or perhaps a "Clock Warrior."

[Ninjutsu] and [Wisdom] were incredibly advanced, akin to the "second hand" and "minute hand" on a clock.

[Precision] was moderate and progressing slowly, like the "hour hand."

But [Taijutsu], [Strength], and [Speed] were practically nonexistent.

"The only issue is that I haven’t figured out targeted methods to improve those three attributes yet."

Nara Raku was concerned about the lagging "Strength, Speed, and Taijutsu" trio, but it wasn't an urgent priority.

His current combat style focused on control, which allowed him to minimize exposing his weaknesses.

"Let's take a closer look at the effects of the [Shadow Clone Technique]!"

Nara Raku carefully examined the description of his first S-Rank jutsu and made a summary:

- No-hand-seals jutsu.
- Yin-Release clone.
- Reality and illusion can be switched.
- Consciousness as a vessel.

Each of these effects was incredibly powerful!

Nara Raku's attention was drawn first to the "reality and illusion switching" ability of the [Shadow Clone Technique].

There was a famous time-space ninjutsu in the ninja world with a similar effect.

Uchiha Obito's Mangekyō Sharingan, with its unique ocular ability that transcends space and causality—Kamui!

"According to the jutsu description, if I anchor my consciousness in the [Shadow Clone], does that mean I could enter an 'intangible state' where attacks pass through me?"

Nara Raku understood that the "reality and illusion switching" of the [Shadow Clone Technique] was fundamentally different from the advanced time-space jutsu, Kamui.

But to other ninjas, whether it's a "shadow" or "space," both were nearly untouchable. Would they notice a big difference?

Nara Raku was delighted by this realization.

Everyone knows how annoying Kamui is, right?

And it wasn’t just about the "clone intangibility."

The key was that he could actually turn this combat concept into reality!

Nara Raku opened his [Jutsu Abilities] and scrolled to another recently learned C-Rank secret technique:

- [C-Rank Secret Technique: Flat Shadow Technique]
- [Jutsu Description: At the user's request, transform the body into a thin sheet.]
- [Jutsu Effect: The user infuses chakra into their shadow, thinning their body and merging it with their shadow. Excellent for stealth.]
- [Jutsu Rating: I’ll always love paper people.jpg]

The [Flat Shadow Technique] was a "not-so-Nara" clan secret.

From the effects, it seemed more suitable for solo ninjas who specialized in infiltration and assassination.

But now, most of the Nara Clan operated in squads.

Nara Raku wasn’t sure which Nara ancestor had developed this secret jutsu.

However, combining the C-Rank [Flat Shadow Technique] with the S-Rank [Shadow Clone Technique] offered a perfect pairing.

His mind raced, quickly devising a strategy brimming with cunning.

"First, use [Shadow Clone Technique] to create an empty shell of a [Shadow Clone].
Then, use [Flat Shadow Technique] to hide myself in the clone’s shadow.
Finally, use the [Shadow Clone Technique] to anchor my consciousness in the clone.

"The [Shadow Clone] would not only be able to use all my Yin-Release techniques, but also possess the powerful 'clone intangibility' effect. Its overall combat power would even surpass my own body. It’s excellent for preventing sneak attacks.

"With an A- in [Ninjutsu] and B+ in [Wisdom], the [Shadow Clone] would already be at the elite Jōnin level!

"And that’s just the clone attacking!"

...

As night fell, though there was still a vast amount of knowledge to explore in the Nara Clan library, Nara Raku reluctantly put down the scrolls and headed home.

This trip to the library had been extremely fruitful.

Back home, the family gathered for dinner.

"Raku, I heard from Peiko about the Third Kazekage's disappearance, and the clan leader has signaled for us to prepare for war," Nara Shūsaku said.

"I'll finish my research quickly and move into the village with Peiko. It’s safer there than at Castle Kikyo."

Nara Raku nodded as he continued eating.

"Speaking of your research—about combining the clan’s secret techniques with the nervous system—"

Nara Raku brought up what he hadn’t had time to say that afternoon.

"I can help you find a highly skilled medical ninja."

Previously, Nara Shūsaku had mentioned that his research had been delayed due to a lack of medical expertise.

Nara Raku happened to know two elite medical ninjas.

If his father was willing, Nara Raku could easily ask one of them to assist.

"You mean Kabuto’s mother, Nonō Yakushi?"

Nara Shūsaku seemed unconvinced.

"Are you close with Nonō?"

Nara Raku answered frankly, "Very close."

After staring at his son for a moment, Nara Shūsaku shook his head.

"You misunderstood me."

"Shūsaku means—"

Nara Peiko chimed in boldly.

"Do you know her well enough to marry her?"

"COUGH COUGH COUGH!!"

Nara Raku began choking, his face turning bright red.

"Don't overreact, Raku."

Nara Peiko calmly handed him a glass of water.

"I'm just speaking the truth. You think Shūsaku doesn’t know any elite medical ninjas himself?

"Why hasn’t he asked for help in his research yet? Have you thought about it?

"Our clan thrives on our secret techniques, and we never let outsiders see our research notes.

"No matter how skilled a medical ninja is, they’re not one of us.

"Shūsaku won’t let an outsider into his research."

"So, Raku, I have another suggestion."

Nara Shūsaku looked at his son seriously.

"Study medicine and take over the research yourself."

Of course, that would let him retire and enjoy life with Mom, right?

Raku gulped down the water.

"Shūsaku, you know Raku’s physical condition. Are you really expecting him to learn Yang-Release medical ninjutsu?" Nara Peiko shook her head.

"You’d be better off hoping he marries Nonō.

"Or Tsunade! Raku, you know I’m all about free love. I won’t interfere with your choices.

"Good luck!"

...

The next morning, Nara Raku, following his plan, went to see the clan leader.

Compared to the previous afternoon, Nara Kazuno was now dressed in full battle gear, with a giant scroll strapped to his back, attracting attention.

"Good morning, clan leader," Raku greeted him politely, eager to please. After all, he was hoping for more S-Rank missions and S-Rank [Ninja Scrolls].

"Raku, here are the two rewards I mentioned yesterday," Kazuno replied, handing him two small scrolls.

"One million ryō in research funding and a supply of chakra metal."

The early bird gets the worm.

Nara Raku carefully accepted the scrolls, placing them into his ninja pouch and thanking the clan leader.

"Thank you, clan leader."

"And this, take it with you."

Kazuno handed him another small scroll.

"When you arrive at the Hokage’s office, give this mission scroll to the Third Hokage."

A mission scroll? But not for me—for the Third Hokage?

Raku was a bit confused as he followed Kazuno.

"Clan leader, what are we doing today?"

"Remember the special rewards I mentioned yesterday?"

Kazuno turned and spoke calmly.

"Those two rewards aren’t in the village—they’re in the capital of the Land of Fire, Kyoto."

[C-level Esoteric Technique: Flat Shadow Technique].

Inspired by a B-grade ninjutsu that Jiraiya has: [Toad Flat Shadow Manipulation].

(End of chapter)

**Chapter 23: The Long-Awaited A-Rank Mission! (Please follow, and vote for me!)**

"We will head to the Hokage Tower to issue and accept an A-Rank mission to go to the capital."

Nara Shikano ran swiftly through the streets of Konoha, arms behind his back in a classic "ninja run" stance.

"With war on the horizon, we need to notify the Daimyo's mansion and secure resources to support the war effort."

To keep up with the clan leader, Nara Raku had to use a bit of chakra to enhance his physical abilities.

"Issue... and accept?"

Because he was running fast, Nara Raku spoke in short, breathless bursts. Physical endurance wasn’t his strong suit.

"Raku, as a researcher, don’t neglect physical training," Nara Shikano, now in his 50s, turned his head with a relaxed tone. "After all, we are still ninjas. As for your question... special circumstances call for special measures. You’ll understand soon enough."

With that, the two quickly left Kikyo Castle and arrived in Konoha Village.

As Nara Raku and Shikano reached the center of the village, two figures, one large and one thin, were already waiting beneath the Hokage Tower.

"Inoichi, Choza."

Nara Shikano nodded to them in greeting, and Nara Raku followed suit.

Yamanaka Inoichi.

Akimichi Choza.

These two, the heirs to their respective clans, stood together with Nara Shikano’s son, Nara Shikaku, as Konoha’s famed “Ino-Shika-Cho” of their generation.

"Uncle Shikano, you've worked hard," Yamanaka Inoichi and Akimichi Choza bowed in respect to Nara Shikano. Their eyes also glanced at Nara Raku but didn't question him directly.

"Seeing you two reminds me—this mission should have been handled by Shikaku," Nara Shikano remarked casually. "After we finish this mission, I’ll probably retire from being a ninja altogether."

Upon hearing this, Inoichi and Choza responded with the usual polite praise, but Nara Raku’s eyelid twitched. *That’s not exactly a good sign, Clan Leader…*

The four entered the Hokage Tower and headed to the top-floor office of the Hokage.

This was Nara Raku’s second visit to the Hokage’s office, but he was no longer as curious as before. He kept his gaze low and tried to blend into the background.

Nara Shikano stepped forward and handed a mission scroll to Hiruzen Sarutobi, the Third Hokage.

"Hokage-sama, this is the Nara Clan's mission request."

Hiruzen received the scroll without surprise, stamped it with the Hokage’s seal, and handed it back to Nara Shikano. The details of the mission had already been discussed the day before.

At the same time, a notification popped up on Nara Raku’s virtual panel.

**[A-Rank Mission Detected!]**

**[A-Rank Mission: ‘Tribute’]**

**[Mission Details: 1. Deliver precious medicinal materials such as deer antlers to the capital of the Land of Fire; 2. Secure war support from the Daimyo.]**

**[Mission Reward: An A-Rank ninja secret scroll.]**

*What kind of bizarre A-Rank mission is this?* Nara Raku wondered.

The first half of the mission involved "delivering materials," while the second half involved "securing support." If it was about presenting tribute to the Daimyo, shouldn’t the two parts be more connected?

*Is this a mission where Konoha’s actually getting tribute from the Daimyo instead?*

As Nara Raku pondered the power dynamics between the Hokage and the Daimyo, Shikano’s voice suddenly pulled him back.

"Raku, proceed with the mission request."

Nara Raku stepped forward, handing the scroll his clan leader had given him to Hiruzen.

"What’s this?" Hiruzen asked as he opened the scroll, only to see a large banknote fall from it.

"C-Rank Mission: ‘Escort.’ Mission Objective: ‘Protect Nara Raku on his way to the Fire Temple.’ Mission Payment: 10,000 Ryo."

With just a glance, Hiruzen realized what was going on. In essence, Nara Shikano had found a loophole within the rules.

The real mission for Shikano, Inoichi, and Choza was to head to the capital and secure war support from the Daimyo. But directly asking for money could be seen as improper. So, they added the pretext of "delivering medicinal materials."

The Nara Clan frequently sold herbs to the Land of Fire’s officials—both to earn money and to build political ties. This was a normal affair for a clan specializing in medicine.

Hiruzen didn’t mind this bending of the rules; in fact, he welcomed it. After all, if the Nara Clan was on good terms with the officials of the Land of Fire, then by extension, wasn’t that Konoha being on good terms with them?

However, why did Nara Shikano want to visit the Fire Temple, and why bring Nara Raku along? These questions briefly crossed Hiruzen’s mind but didn’t linger.

He placed the 10,000 Ryo note back into the scroll, stamped it with the Hokage’s seal, and returned it to Nara Shikano.

"Move quickly, Shikano," Hiruzen said with a wave. "There are others waiting for you."

The Nara Clan had their tricks, but they weren’t the only ones bending the rules. Hiruzen had added two B-Rank missions to the A-Rank one, taking advantage of the strong "Ino-Shika-Cho" team.

After bidding farewell to the Third Hokage, the four headed swiftly to the Konoha gates, where a crowd was already bustling with activity.

Among the throng, six ninja wearing headbands were waiting. Despite their varied outfits and youthful appearance, the green vests they wore indicated that they were all Chunin.

"This is my first B-Rank mission since becoming a Chunin!" Sarutobi Asuma grumbled, scanning the village with a frown. "Who has the nerve to make us wait this long? If I find out, I’ll report it to the old man!"

"Asuma, don't be like that," Kurenai Yuhi said, trying to calm him down. "The Hokage explained already. With our current strength, completing the mission to clear out bounty hunters along the highway would be difficult. A Jonin will assist us."

Off to the side, Tobitake Tonbo glanced at his teammates, then shifted his gaze to the opposite end of the group.

*As much as Asuma and Kurenai ignore me sometimes, they’re still way better than Guy!*

In the midst of the crowd, a deep green figure was moving energetically, shouting incomprehensible things.

"This B-Rank mission is our chance!" Might Guy proclaimed. "If we succeed, I’ll run a thousand laps around the village! If we fail, I’ll run five thousand! If I can’t walk, I’ll go on my hands... THAT’S YOUTH!"

Might Guy—who would one day surpass them all—but that was still in the future.

Meanwhile, his teammates, Shiranui Genma and Ebisu, exchanged knowing looks and sighed.

"Let’s hope Guy doesn’t mess up the mission this time."

"Let’s hope he doesn’t fail the B-Rank mission."

Though their words differed, their thoughts were the same. If they could redo things, Shiranui and Ebisu would never have teamed up with Guy again. Even the laziest student at the Academy would be better than this green whirlwind of energy!

At the same moment, Nara Shikano and his team finally arrived. Inoichi and Choza quickly blended into the bustling caravans, helping manage the crowd, while Nara Raku observed the other ninja.

With a glance, he recognized them all—former classmates, and all of them well-known in their own right.

To the right were Sarutobi Asuma, Kurenai Yuhi, and Tobitake Tonbo.

To the left were Shiranui Genma, Ebisu, and Might Guy.

*Phew—*

A whistle pierced the air as Nara Shikano produced a small flute from nowhere, summoning a sleek, black-eyed, shiny-furred deer pulling a small wooden cart.

*That deer is nearly as impressive as Daikaku! What a beauty!* Nara Raku thought as he admired the animal, only to be interrupted by his clan leader’s voice.

"Raku, get on the cart," Shikano called, taking the reins of the cart himself.

"We're leaving the village!"

**Chapter 24: The Twelve Guardian Ninjas! (Please follow and vote!)**

The deer cart led the way at the front of the merchant caravan, with a long, winding line of travelers stretching out behind, gradually moving away from Konoha.

With his powerful sensory abilities, Yamanaka Haiichi led the trio of Sarutobi Asuma, Kurenai Yuhi, and Flying Bamboo Dragonfly in a swift formation, advancing quickly at the right front of the group.

At the same time, the team of Genma Shiranui, Ebisu, and Might Guy were positioned toward the rear right, while the more defensive Akimichi Choza guarded the back of the caravan.

The nine ninjas from Konoha formed a special formation, encircling and protecting the merchant convoy.

As the cool breeze gently blew against his face, Nara Raku couldn’t help but squint his eyes in contentment.

At first, he had thought that when tasked with missions outside the village, he would have to rely on his own legs to run back and forth on the road.

Because of that, Nara Raku had even considered borrowing a large animal for the task.

But now?

Although the deer cart wasn’t as comfortable as a horse-drawn carriage, it was still far better than running on foot!

**"I didn’t expect that today's mission would be outside the village,"** Raku thought, leaning against the large scroll beside him, made from a soft material even more comfortable than the wooden frame of the deer cart.

**"If I had known, I would’ve prepared some ink for my ‘Super Beast Imitating Drawing’ technique. At least I could’ve created a flying beast."**

For this A-rank mission that came up this morning, Nara Raku felt somewhat underprepared.

Other than his standard ninja tools—kunai, shuriken, explosive tags, flash bombs, and smoke bombs—he only had a few soldier pills with him.

In addition, he had two small scrolls given to him by Nara Shikano.

However, with the Ino-Shika-Cho trio providing security and the shadow clone technique as his hidden trump card, Nara Raku didn’t feel particularly worried.

**“Did you understand the task briefing in the Hokage’s office, Raku?”**

The elderly voice of Nara Shikano carried over with the chilly mountain breeze.

Raku, sitting behind him, knew that the clan leader was answering his earlier question.

Even though Nara Shikano was the one executing the mission, he was also the one who commissioned it.

Raku had considered doing something similar, but the "Lazy System" he relied on didn’t allow for such self-entertainment.

**“Maybe after we return from Kyoto, I could try replicating the clan leader’s strategy…”** Raku pondered briefly. **“I may not be able to initiate missions, but I could use a third party to assign tasks to me indirectly.”**

The thought quickly passed through his mind, and Raku responded to the clan leader's question.

**"Yes, our main mission is to head to Kyoto. You’ve added an additional mission to visit the Fire Temple, and..."**

Raku looked toward Sarutobi Asuma, who was energetically leaping through the trees in the distance.

**“The Hokage also assigned two other Chunin squads to carry out different tasks along the way.”**

This strategy made sense to Nara Raku. If possible, it was always best to take on all the side missions that were along the same route. It was just common sense.

**"Exactly,"** Shikano confirmed. **"The squad on the right took a B-rank mission as bounty hunters, and the squad on the left accepted a B-rank mission to guard the merchant convoy."**

**"I, Haiichi, and Choza will assist them if they need help completing their tasks."**

Hearing this, Raku had a sudden realization. So that fast B-rank mission yesterday was actually picked up by Sarutobi Asuma’s team!

Still, Raku was curious.

**"But couldn’t we also accept both of those B-rank missions ourselves?"**

**"Ninjas generally don’t take on multiple missions simultaneously unless there are special circumstances, no matter how much money is offered,"** Nara Shikano explained, his tone carrying a hint of playful reminder, knowing Raku’s fondness for wealth.

**"And besides, we’ve already accepted an A-rank mission."**

**"However, if we do end up helping with those ninjas’ missions, it will be recorded as a B-rank task on our official mission records when we return to the village."**

**"Even for me?"** Raku asked, intrigued.

**"You?"** Shikano chuckled.

**"Raku, you’re technically the one who commissioned the mission. Outside the village, a ninja’s actions aren’t counted as official tasks."**

Raku nodded, a bit disappointed. He had hoped to "freeload" on those two B-rank missions and score a couple of B-rank secret ninja scrolls.

**"Still, an A-rank mission is not bad, right?"** he consoled himself. **"Especially since I got this one for free."**

Konoha had strict rules about mission classifications. Different ranks of ninjas were allowed to take on different levels of missions. As a Genin (his official rank), the highest mission Raku could accept was C-rank.

Previously, he had only been able to take on B-rank missions by riding on Tsunade’s coattails.

But no matter how much he tried, A-rank missions were off-limits.

Raku speculated that the only reason he could take on this A-rank mission, titled "Tribute," was because of his status within the Nara Clan.

His clan commissioned the mission, Konoha accepted it, and then the mission was handed right back to the Nara Clan for execution.

**"Freeloading on missions, huh? That might be an interesting method to trigger future tasks,"** Raku mused, his mind wandering.

**"Although, this freeloading approach is probably harder to pull off than the idea of guiding a third party to assign me tasks."**

As Raku and the clan leader continued chatting, the merchant caravan leisurely made its way over the mountains surrounding Konoha and reached a wide, open plain.

The sky was blue, the clouds were white, and the fields were lush and green, creating a scene of natural beauty.

The deer cart ambled along peacefully, while Nara Raku curiously surveyed the surroundings.

But after a while, he grew bored and slouched back against the large scroll beside him.

The level of technological development in the ninja world was quite strange, even bizarre.

Biotechnology had advanced so rapidly that it had left other fields of science in the dust.

**“Electric wires, fields, cottages…what kind of ‘ninja punk’ world is this?"**

At that moment, Nara Shikano suddenly straightened his posture and turned around, about to say something to Raku. But when he saw the bored expression on Raku’s face, he chuckled.

**“After you’ve completed more missions outside the village, you’ll come to realize,"** Shikano said with a grin, stroking his beard. **"The ninja world may be vast, but Konoha is still the best."**

Raku instinctively nodded in agreement.

While Konoha wasn’t exactly his idea of an ideal place to live, when compared to other parts of the ninja world, it really wasn’t so bad!

Just as Raku was about to reply, he noticed the clan leader's posture grow even more rigid and tense.

**"Clan leader, is something wrong?"**

**"Yes,"** Shikano replied. **"Haiichi just used the Yamanaka clan’s telepathic technique to notify me. He sensed several ninjas approaching the caravan. Probably bounty hunters.**

**"Haiichi is handling them now with the others. Oh, it’s already over."**

The tension that had just started to build up within Raku disappeared in an instant.

**"That was fast. I didn’t even notice anything happening."**

**"Don’t overestimate the strength of those bounty hunters,"** Shikano said, returning to his usual relaxed demeanor. **"Konoha is the strongest ninja village in the world, and nobody can deny that. The average bounty hunter probably isn’t even as strong as some of our academy students."**

Raku silently absorbed the clan leader's words.

As an elite ninja with a wealth of experience, Shikano might not know all of the deeper secrets of the ninja world like Raku did. But in terms of general understanding, ten Rakus couldn't compare to the clan leader!

**"At this pace, we should reach Kyoto by tomorrow morning,"** Shikano said after checking the time. **"When we arrive, we’ll head to the Daimyo’s residence to meet him."**

**"The Daimyo…"** Raku recalled the conversation about the power dynamics between the Hokage and the Daimyo from the Hokage’s office.

**"Clan leader, do you think the Daimyo will agree to our request?"**

**"He will,"** Shikano said with confidence. **"Konoha and the Land of Fire are inseparable. The Daimyo is the highest authority in the country, and he won't undermine Konoha, especially when it comes to matters of war."**

**"I have another question,"** Raku pressed.

"Between the Hokage and the Daimyo, who has the higher status, or rather, whose voice holds more weight?"
"Voice? That's an interesting choice of words."
Nara Shikano nodded with a smile.
"As for that question, all I can say is:
"When we agree, we listen to the Daimyo;
"When we disagree, we listen to the Hokage."

Is this some kind of battle for household dominance?
Nara Raku thought to himself, feeling a bit speechless.

However, Nara Shikano's answer didn't exceed his expectations.
No matter how much advantage the Daimyo of the Land of Fire holds in terms of status, position, title, or resources,
the power of Konoha can always bring the Daimyo down to his knees!
"Since we're on this topic, let's talk about the first special reward I mentioned earlier.
"Raku, do you know about the 'Twelve Guardian Ninja' organization?"

The "Twelve Guardian Ninja" is an organization of ninjas from the original work.
It wasn’t heavily explored in the manga, but the anime did create a storyline about internal conflicts within the group.

**Chapter 25: The Last Descendant of the Blood Pond Clan!**

The Twelve Guardians of the Shinobi?

Nara Raku furrowed his brow slightly. He felt like he'd heard of this ninja organization somewhere before.

Wait, isn't that the same group that Sarutobi Asuma, in the future, joins after leaving Konoha? There was also that big monk who could summon a "mini-Gundam"...

Seeing Nara Raku frown without saying anything, Nara Shikano assumed he hadn't heard of the organization at all.

"This group is quite distant for someone like you, a newly graduated Genin, so it's not surprising if you haven't heard of them," Nara Shikano explained.

"The Twelve Guardians of the Shinobi is a ninja group jointly established by Konoha, the Fire Temple, and the government of the Land of Fire to protect the Daimyo of the Fire Nation."

Hearing this, Nara Raku nodded slightly. This information aligned with what he already knew.

The Daimyo of the Fire Nation, though a highly respected figure, wasn't necessarily beloved by all ninja, especially those from other nations. To them, the Daimyo was just an ordinary man with a higher status.

If a ninja from another village was tasked with assassinating the Daimyo of the Fire Nation, without proper protection, it would be no harder than killing a chicken.

Of course, such an act would cause international outrage in the ninja world. An assassination like that would disrupt the balance, potentially triggering a multi-nation retaliation.

So, it was normal for the Daimyo of the Fire Nation to have a group of ninja dedicated to his protection.

What intrigued Nara Raku was something else. While it made sense that Konoha and the Fire Nation’s government would form the Twelve Guardians, why was the Fire Temple involved? That temple didn’t seem to possess much power.

Unable to hold back his curiosity, Nara Raku asked, "Chief, I've read about the Fire Temple in our academy textbooks, but isn't it just a ninja temple?"

"More accurately, it's one of the last remaining temples that upholds the teachings of the Sage of the Six Paths and the ninja faith," Nara Shikano replied, not surprised by Raku's reaction. Very few ninja took the Fire Temple seriously.

"The Fire Temple is also connected to the second special reward I mentioned earlier… but we'll talk about that when we get there."

With a sly smile, Nara Shikano kept some mystery around the subject.

Raku bit his lip. "Does this special reward have anything to do with the Twelve Guardians?"

"It does," Shikano nodded. "As an organization dedicated to protecting the Daimyo, the Twelve Guardians are stationed at the Daimyo's mansion in the capital. The job may be tedious, but it's far removed from the dangers of war.

"So, Raku, would you like to become one of the Twelve Guardians?"

"If you do, with the power and influence of the Nara clan, we can ensure you get a position among them."

Nara Shikano looked at his younger relative with hopeful eyes.

A position among the Twelve Guardians—that was the first special reward that Shikano had prepared in connection to the S-rank family mission, "Eye of Shadows."

Shikano believed he had a good understanding of Raku's strengths and weaknesses: abundant mental energy, lacking physical stamina, and mediocre ninja potential. In this situation, creating a stable environment where Raku could train and build his strength was essential.

The main advantage of the Twelve Guardians was their safety, especially at a time when the Third Great Ninja War was on the horizon. Serving as a Guardian would be much safer than staying as a Konoha ninja!

Raku understood the underlying message in Shikano's words and found himself deep in thought.

Was he interested in joining the Twelve Guardians? Absolutely.

Being a "Guardian" versus being a "Konoha Ninja" felt like the difference between having a desk job and being a field worker. Konoha ninja traveled far and wide, day and night, enduring hardship and danger. In contrast, the Guardians worked in a fixed, luxurious location—the capital of the Land of Fire.

Easy, stable, safe, and peaceful.

If it weren't for his recent awakening of the "Lazy Ghost System," Raku would have been thrilled with this suggestion. Working hard was one way to earn rewards, but getting away with slacking off? That was where the real money was.

But now, having tasted the sweetness of the Lazy Ghost System, Raku was reluctant. The easy, safe role of a Guardian would keep him from taking on higher-level missions, accessing advanced ninja scrolls, and growing stronger.

'So the best option for me would be to find a job in Konoha where I can slack off as much as possible?' Raku mused. 'I actually had one before, but I got fired by my supervisor before I even started…'

After a while, Raku finally snapped back to reality.

"Sorry, Chief. I can't give you an answer just yet," he apologized but didn't reject the offer entirely. "I'd like to see what the Twelve Guardians are like before deciding whether to join them."

"No problem. This is an important decision," Shikano replied understandingly. "Even if you want to become a Guardian, it won’t happen overnight. Once this mission is over and we're safely back in the village, you can talk it over with Sousuke and Peiko."

Raku knew they wouldn’t oppose the idea—they’d probably be pleased by it. He wasn’t worried about talking with his parents; his concern was Shikano himself. Since taking this mission, how many death flags had the Chief raised? The more flags, the more danger!

At that moment, Yamanaka Haiichi approached. "Lord Shikano," he said, switching to a more formal tone mid-mission. "I've used my mind-reading technique to probe the thoughts of those ninjas who attacked the caravan. The situation is mostly clear now."

Mind-reading technique? Raku perked up his ears, intrigued by the Yamanaka clan's mental abilities.

Shikano asked calmly, "Are they bounty hunters from the Gold Exchange?"

"Yes," Haiichi confirmed. "They attacked the caravan because they had a mission. But it wasn’t to steal from the caravan; they were searching for the last descendant of the Blood Pond Clan."

Blood Pond Clan? Raku was unfamiliar with the name.

"The Blood Pond Clan?" Shikano frowned. "Weren’t they driven to Hell Valley in the Land of Hot Water by the Uchiha, hired by the Land of Lightning?"

Wait… The Uchiha were hired by the Land of Lightning? When did that happen? Was this before Konoha was even founded?

"The bounty hunters don’t know many details," Haiichi continued. "Apparently, a ninja from the Blood Pond Clan massacred their entire clan and escaped from the Land of Hot Water, fleeing into the Land of Fire."

"A clan massacre…" Shikano’s expression darkened. He had never heard of such a terrible event before.

"Was this attack on the caravan just a coincidence, or do the bounty hunters think the Blood Pond ninja is among us?"

"It seems to be a coincidence," Haiichi replied. "They didn’t have any solid evidence. They just assumed we were a small caravan passing through and tried to extort us under the guise of hunting a fugitive."

"Increase security, expand the sensing range, and continue at the same pace," Shikano ordered calmly. "Notify the leaders of the smaller caravans behind us about the bounty hunter attack and extend the midday break by an hour."

"Yes, Lord Shikano." With that, Haiichi vanished.

The caravan continued without further incident that day.

By evening, as they set up camp, Shikano noticed that Raku seemed uncomfortable with spending the night outdoors. "Don’t worry, once we get through tonight, we’ll be fine," he reassured.

Chief, if you keep saying things like that, I'm going to start seriously worrying! Raku thought nervously.

"Chief, you should rest. I want to practice a bit more," Raku said. Since he didn’t have night guard duty due to his role as the mission client, he decided to stick to his usual training regimen.

After saying goodnight to the Chief, Raku found a nearby tree, jumped onto its branch, and sat cross-legged.

After taking a soldier pill, he felt his energy surge.

'By tomorrow morning, my Precision will break into C rank!' Raku thought as he felt his energy increase. He activated his Shaded Eye and scanned the camp.

'One… two… eight… nine? Ten?!'
