Sacred Symbols+, Episode 457 | Neil Druckmann: The Man Who Wears Many Hats

Please welcome legendary writer, designer, director, and executive Neil Druckmann to Sacred Symbols+. Here in the games space, Neil is already one of the best-known names in the development scene, a man who began at Naughty Dog as a programmer on the latter Jak titles, only to climb the ranks to lead the entire studio, full stop. Today, we focus our conversation primarily around his work on HBO's rendition of The Last of Us, an adaptation which he co-wrote, co-produced, and even helped direct, tasks which -- when combined with all he does at Naughty Dog itself, including writing and directing the upcoming Intergalactic for PS5 -- has forced him into a number of roles in multiple industries. How does he keep it all straight? Does he ever sleep? What are his priorities, both professionally and personally? And how does he feel about the reaction to HBO's The Last of Us, from casting to story changes and more? While we wait for Intergalactic as patiently as we can, let's instead delve into the life and times of one of the few people who has successfully crossed between gaming to film and back again.

A particular thank you for everyone involved in bringing this episode to life, including Neil’s time. He just talks so well about all these things, it’s fascinating to listen to. I hope we get more of him on Sacred Symbols as the years go by. Cheers

It’s pretty hard not to at least see the WLF and Seraphites through that lens, especially with lines like “I’m tired of fighting over land I don’t even care about anymore” or “We could avoid this if you’d just stay on your island,” or just the back and forth escalation and retaliation nobody even remembers who started. Not saying it only maps to Israel and Palestine at all, but you don’t have to even be a particularly politically-minded person to at least see the similarities without trying too hard.

Very pleased to hear that TLoU Pt. 2 wasn’t an allegory for that middle east conflict. I never even thought about that when I played it, but hearing Colin put that idea forward has stuck in my mind since, and had tainted my appreciation for it. I suppose some people see everything through a political lens.

Head bashed in Joel making his debut in the Patreon names is fitting

“The deepest game we’ve ever done…” I’m hanging on that line because I’m not sure how you get deeper than TLoU! Great interview man congrats. 👏
