Constellation, Episode 117 | Wrestling, Plans that Backfired
Added 2025-03-31 16:00:18 +0000 UTC
Hello and welcome to Constellation! Usually, Dagan is the one who writes these descriptions, but he forgot this week! So, you have me (Dustin), and I'm not even on this episode! He's been getting a bit cheeky with them recently, so it's probably best I'm here to clean things up anyway. For this episode, Matty wants to talk about wrestling, and Dagan asks about plans we've had that have backfired on us. You may be asking, where's the third topic? This episode ended up being quite a doozy just between those two topics, so the last topic needed to be cut due to timing. So, join Dagan, Colin, Matty, and Gene for another episode. And hey, Dagster, don't forget to write the description next week!

Rempe is the worst goon in history. He is just tall. Gets his ass kicked in 90% of his fights by guys who are a foot shorter than him

That was the worst goalie interference call I have seen. Palmeri was outside the crease and the goalie hit him

Any chance we can get downloadable file names other than the number 1? My files end up getting named 1 1(2) 1(3) and so on.

For Gene - if you really want to jump in, watch Royal Rumble and then Elimination Chamber. Then just start watching the weekly’s. Those are always the best jumping in points.

Colin, you really are making a mountain out of a mole hill with the RSS thing. It's not nearly as big of a deal as you think it is.

If you wanna know wrestling Jim Cornette is the man.
Curious would Colin would have to say about his podcast true southen dixiecrat breaking down wrestling to even a historic and traditions point of view while being the most ruthless guy when it comes to critisizing the modern product.

Commenting again after hearing the conversation on community moderation, people being shitty, etc, with my own bit of hopefully counterbalancing the negativity. Just wanna say I joined the Patreon about a month ago after having been a fan of Colin from his IGN days. Since joining, I’ve become an avid listener of just about every show you guys do, and genuinely I have become a fan of all of you.
I was a fan of Colin and Chris already coming in to this, but for the others: Dagan, Gene, Matty, Cog, Dustin, Micah, Brad, Hoeg. You guys have made me fans instantly. I look so forward to hearing everyone’s opinions on these shows and all of you at LSM have genuinely reignited a passion for video games in me that was dormant for a little bit. You all make my work day a little bit easier, and I appreciate y’all.
Also shoutout to Jaffe. I hate hearing that he felt bad or questioned his belonging in LSM content. He’s great and it’s always a treat to see and hear from him.

You guys should check out the Vince McMahon documentary on Netflix titled “Mr. McMahon”.
It does an excellent job of showing how truly genius Vince was at staging the WWE and creating its success. Truly one of the all time great promoters and showmen.

Agreed that Mox/Cope wasn't very interesting but I don't know about it being "cringe". Regardless, Mox/Swerve is a much better program already and TK seems to have remembered that the Death Riders are trios champions so that is back in play.
In terms of storytelling they seem to have a lot of rivalries brewing going into the Owen Hart tournament so we shall see how that plays out.
Disagree on Toni Storm but each to their own.

Gene, I would recommend the official WWE video called “The Complete Bloodline Storyline”. There is a version from 2 years ago that is 2 hours long or one from 2 weeks ago that is 4 hours and will have you FULLY caught up on WWE’s biggest storyline from the past 5 years.

I love Marty’s story about paying for gold in RuneScape but it is most definitely against the rules of the game to RWT (Real World Trade) for in game gold. He is lucky to not have been caught by Jagex, but they were not as on top of it back then.

When I saw the wrestling topic I was hoping that we finally got Ian from 616. That would super awesome in the future. This lineup looks great too though.

I started watching wrestling again because my wife and I went all the way back through the attitude era on streaming. We decided to stop around 2004 or so, but then she started watching the newer stuff, and a buddy of mine that was watching the contemporary show told me it was getting good again. So we started to watch around the time that Cody Rhodes came back to WWE (tho I was lurking on AEW stuff when that started). I have to say, it's been very good, but if i had criticism, it's that the pomp and circumstance, the recaps, and all the numbers wanking WWE does, totally get in the way of the show and take up way too much time. They have so many people on the roster that seemingly can't get time to develop or stay relevant because they focus on 40 year old established stars and their 20 minutes of entrance, instead of squeezing in another match on the card

I recently came back to wwe too Matty. I hated the PG era and what Vince was doing to the business. Took a little bit, but the HHH era has brought back some enjoyment in the product, even though I don't watch everything now, I check out the bigger segments on YouTube now.

I think the wrestling behind the scenes show Colin is talking about is Dark Side of the Ring. It's definitely worth a watch and gives insight into what drives wrestlers and the pretty fucked mindset they have.

Hardly. The Moxley and Cope shit is just cringe and all the Toni Storm shit is just becoming how many sexual puns can I cram into a promo. They have always had good wrestling but their storytelling and the booking is what lets them down.
WWE is the opposite it's the storytelling and production that saves it. WWE wrestling is subpar to just good at times.

You guys needed a real bonafide wrestling nerd in this one. Just to correct the record on the blood in wrestling comment, it’s like 99% real blood. I’d say I’ve almost never seen wrestlers use packets, blading is by far the most common practice for getting color.

I relate to this somewhat. I work as a Divorce Attorney, and it's frustrating to have clients (of whom I have dozens of at a time) attempt to dictate every aspect of my personal life, tell me what to do what to say and how to dress, threatening to leave a bad review for me if I do not tow to their every demand. Look, I am trying to HELP you, and yeah you pay me for it, but it's my job, not my entire self. I need to have a personal life. I try to dress nice, I try to do my absolute best, but if you don't like me, FIRE me, you don't need to use me, there are so many other attorneys out there you could use, and 95% of my clients love how I am. I cannot change myself for the 5% of bad actors.

Agreed 100%, I stopped watching all street fight videos because way too many of them legitimately turn into snuff films. The last one I saw was a dude thrown out of club in Thailand and the bouncer bounced the dude’s head off the concrete so hard you knew he was dead

Colin’s take on the fight videos vs MMA is a little backwards to me. Street fights are arguably way more dangerous than professional fighters with a ref. You are way more likely to see someone get a life altering injury/die on any of the fight subreddits he frequents (as do I) than in a UFC fight; distinctly because people don’t know what they are doing or when to stop.

I haven't listened yet, but I gotta say: I hate the ad-heavy direction WWE has gone in since Vince McMahon left.
The clean, light blue ring mat and show theming brought a sense of prestige to their presentation. It needed to be toned down a notch or so, for sure, but they stripped it down and filled it with ads. It's so corporate and consumerist-oriented now, and I think that stands in contrast with the nature of the product.
It just detracts from it in a way that it doesn't from boxing or UFC, as it's supposed to be its own world, an escape from reality. It's put me off from following the shows as much as I did, before.
I like the storytelling and athleticism, and those will still draw me in, but the totality of the presentation was a major element attracting me to it. That's been watered down, visually, even if some production elements (like camera cuts) are better. It's too bad.

What the hell is Matty talking about. I just watched Monday Night Raw that had an attendance of nearly 20,000. Not only that, if it isn't big then why would Netflix pay 5 billion dollars for the streaming rights? I think the quality has suffered some but it's as big as it's ever been.

The only time I wish I was a podcaster is to talk about wrestling with you guys. I recommend watching beyond the mat documentary. It’s a film crew backstage of the wwe during the start of the attitude era, and when Bret Hart got screwed by Vince McMahon. The drama and politics of the wwe is so intriguing.

Hey Matty! Just to say AEW has returned to being really good on a weekly basis over the past month or so. The PPVs never lost their quality but the weekly shows have begun to feel genuinely exciting again.
