Loved this lineup and loved this episode! thanks, guys. Dagan, teh fact that you still like Nirvana, makes everything else you said about music ok with me.

Guybrush Threepwood

I would also want to go back and see the American Revolution. The more you learn about it the more fascinating it becomes.

Cyprus Davis

Man, I miss Colin x Jaffe 😢

Joshua Jones

This conversation made me start singing St. Andrew’s and my daughter asked what song that is. I played the album for the first time in at least 10 years so she could listen. So criminally underrated. So sad that the bee girl turned so many people away from an incredible band.

ReggieFilsaiMesBunz

No problem. I don’t know many people who appreciate Blind Melon either so it’s nice to chat about them. Check out the Letters From a Porcupine documentary if you haven’t. I haven’t seen it in years but it should be on YouTube. Yes, those are also my favorite tracks from Soup!

ReggieFilsaiMesBunz

Oh yeah for sure with No Rain, that song was overplayed even into the 2000's. It's a cool little trippy and catchy song but I don't even listen to it. It's funny he mixed up Smashing Pumpkins and Blind Melon though because my Dad did the exact same thing when I was like 13 and I remember giving him a hard time because to me those bands and Vocalists are extremely different but 2 of my favorites. St. Andrews Fall + Galaxie are 2 of my favorite songs. Honestly Soup is their Nevermind, that record is just a joy. (Sorry I don't hear people talking about Blind melon too often. I gotta nerd out HAHA)

Seth

I think her simplistic and sometimes off kilter drumming works with Jack’s crazy playing and singing and it works well for their blues influence but seeing him with a killer drummer later was awesome too

Gooch Gobbler

I can’t get down with bands that play live exactly as it was recorded. A big part of the appeal of live music to me is seeing different interpretations of the same piece. If I wanted to listen to a carbon copy of the album, I’d just listen to the album.

Chicago Style Hot Dog Enjoyer

Yeah, dude, he was gifted with very unique vocal cords. His normal speaking voice was almost like music. I can understand Hoeg’s resentment for “No Rain”, but Blind Melon was a damn tight band. Their best material wasn’t even acknowledged by popular media.

Nick Gagas

I just watched a live performance at the Metro in 1995 by Blind Melon and Shannon was obviously fucked up, but my fucking god he sounds incredible. As a singer watching him shred his upper register but sound pitch perfect is insanity. I sing stuff like Korn, and Smashing Pumpkins with ease but fuck dude I won't even try to touch Shannon even though Blind Melon is a top 10 of all time band for me.

Seth

The Pearl Jam slander almost made me unsubscribe, do better

mudder12

Dagan’s hatred towards Barenaked Ladies is completely warranted. “One Week” is one of the most irritating pieces of shit I’ve ever had the displeasure of hearing. Being a huge music nerd, I LOVED this episode. Shannon Hood, Blind Melon lead, also dead btw. Their sophomore album, “Soup”, is terrific.

Nick Gagas

Dude Jack White hasn’t performed with Meg in 20 years. Please give him another chance. He’s put out like 10 album with amazing drummers, including his project the dead weather where he plays the drums. His newest album might even be better than some of the white stripes stuff

Gooch Gobbler

If you YouTube mattys video about the reveal of the Kotor remake, he edited in the reaction

Yalingo

lol Hoeg we almost had to fight. I love the smashing pumpkins! One of my favorite bands. Please check them out again but maybe you still won’t like them as their most famous stuff is very 90s. I wonder what Colin thinks of Jimmy Chamberlin’s drumming. One of my favorite drummers

Gooch Gobbler

I'm not sure he has said that specifically. Regardless, you wouldn't take a person's gaming opinions seriously if they haven't played anything past PS2.

Micah Locke

bu bu bu but it's not the exact SAME thing he listened to when he was 22 so it must be trash

Gooch Gobbler

The difference is there's a physical barrier between the regular AI user and weapons grade plutonium. There wouldn't be a barrier between a user of generative AI and products made with generative AI.

Yalingo

Matty is either very humble or doesn’t realize just how intelligent he actually is.

Forrest Hunter

Roman history is actually very “knowable” and well documented. History, roughly the way we understand it today, was a well established discipline in Rome and to a lesser extent in Greece even earlier. The same goes for later periods like the High (late) Middle Ages, well before the invention of the printing press. We aren’t just making shit up willy nilly.

Trill Spencer

Here is the difference between then and now. Why can't AI just do those things too? Out of all those things you mentioned, AI can do. AI can research, consult, sell, and develop. Tell me one thing AI can't do and I will immediately push back, because technically the only thing it can't do is physical stuff, but if a machine is already doing that, an AI can control the machine. Manual labor like plumbing, sure. But society doesn't need a million plumbers. Our society is based around making money to survive. It isn't based on manual survival, like hunting for food and finding water. Most of the jobs that make a majority of people money in our society can and will be replaced by AI, that is my belief. Insurance? AI. Consulting? AI. Marketing? AI. You name it, it will be AI. If it isn't a trade to support the AI infrastructer, or a job that creates food, it will be AI. Why? Because the person who owns that business wants to make more money, and if they can save on the cost by using AI, they will. I mean, even Hoeg says if it gets rid of his job, all the better. And it will. Law is just legal code. An AI will learn it faster and more comprehensively than a human, and then there is no need for a human lawyer. So, how is he going to make money? Also, people are going to charge an arm and a leg for human services. Like Dagen's point, that human touch. But why would anyone pay Dagen 40 an hour when you can get the same thing done in 1 min at a fraction of the cost, and STILL generate profit? And, how are consumers going to pay Dagen for his human product when, at that point, it will be a luxery item compared to the AI market? Not everyone shops at farmers markets these days, and those places are becoming more and more expensive. Not everyone can afford luxery items, but that is what human work will become, because a human will have to charge more for their time and effort than an AI to make a living, but consumers won't be able to afford it. So, only the best of the best can work to get an income, and only the rich can afford those human services. In short, I agree with Colin. It's going to widen the economy disparity and destory economies as a whole.

Jamin Fuller

Logical conclusion is all of what we know being destroyed. What you just said was the equivalent of "Well if everybody had the ability to fully harness nuclear energy nobody would have to pay for electricity so Comed would not have the advantage" but in realty the entire world would be destroyed because anyone and everyone anywhere could make a nuclear bomb.

Seth

Not to mention the ability humans will be able to harness with AI, for example the ability to rip though all encryptions, hack whatever PC it wants, break our financial systems, rip away any privacy that was left, and destroy any and all dissonance. We will see hell on earth in our lifetimes and its pretty wild. Thats on top of half of jobs disappearing in the next 30 years. MS just made a new Quantum chip, just cant wait to see what will happen when we load that bullet into the AI, Good luck everybody! It's been fun generating cute cat pictures and having fun asking it to help us plan our vacations or making it easier to code lazy LOL. Social media was the exact same way on a much much smaller scale. It came out, people thought it was so novel and helpful, then the suicide rate skyrockets up 40% since the year 2000. We are truly and royally fucked, but as always society gets fucked with a smile.

Seth

One of Tre Cool's favorite drummers is Meg White lol

Zack

This was just an example because they brought it up. Manufacturing DRASTICALLY changed on the 80s/90s. Those people lost jobs but got other jobs. At the same time hundreds of new jobs were created elsewhere to research, develop, consult, sell and implement such technologies. What I’m saying is that: Everything is going to be fine and when we look back to today in 10 years from now we will see that some people were overreacting a good deal.

tracefree

I don't know Collins take as I haven't gotten that far but AI isn't just a simple mechanical arm that is picking up and moving something to perform a simple task. AI is scary and extremely dangerous. Using AI for the basic functions that we are using it now is like putting a nuclear bomb into a catapult and using it like a rock to crush people instead of detonating it. Once AI is advanced enough to rip through every layer of encryption and hack every single computer on the planet with 0 need for an operator, we will see it used in ways that topple all of which we know. Buckle up for hell on earth because we will see it in our lifetime.

Seth

I love Colin but his takes on AI are so off based. Every time he talks about AI I just want to skip the podcast entirely. I think if you don’t understand the topic and how it is widely used - especially in big corporations at the moment - you shouldn’t talk about it with that kind of opinion. Matty plays it great with the unknown factor and I really love Hoeg’s takes because it’s the exact way I think of it as a software engineer that uses GenAI on a daily basis to get context from huge documents, write code or plan an itinerary for my next vacation or what have you. It’s insane to not see the benefit and to worry about humans being replaced. Hell - factory workers at Ford and VW etc also had that fear once machine arms started to dominate production. Where is society now? Surely not in shambles. As Hoeg says, every major technology has major impacts and changes everything (not replacing rather re-aligning). I can tell you that because of modern technology there are almost 45.000 new job types that were non existent 30 years ago. Just think what smartphones brought to the table creating millions of new jobs or the internet where you can order anything online. Did the shops went bankrupt? Many did. But everything moved on and changed for the better! The amount of frustration I have every time he talks about AI is innumerable.

tracefree

I genuinely think the song Dagan was referring to was Teenage Dirtbag by Wheatus. Song fucking SUCKS. Hate it.

Cameron Sturre

Man I really think Colin would love Star Trek if he gave it a fair chance, especially Enterprise, the first space exploration voyage in the 2150s He'd probably love Deep Space Nine and Voyager too tbh, but mainly Enterprise

Macro

Colin says his music taste is so eclectic, but never have I heard him mention a song or group created after the W Bush administration. I promise that there is incredible new music coming out every single week if you know where to look!

Micah Locke

Great episode! Would love to hear a full Colin and Hoeg SS+ episode on AI related topics.

Haru Discourse

Does anyone have the link to Matty and Chris’s live stream reaction to the KOTOR remake reveal?

Andre Ordonez

I really don’t like modern pop country, but old country up until the mid 90s is pretty dope. Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, George Strait. The thing I notice the most is that country guitarists can fucking SHRED and as a metalhead I’m like damn…what a waste.

Child Aloy

I appreciate his optimism as well but I feel like it’s rooted in the assumption that corporations ultimately care about people. At the end of the day, companies care about only one thing. Profit. Make no mistake, the second that it’s guaranteed an AI can do your job just as good, if not better, they will drop you faster than you can blink. This will happen to every job in every industry.

Nick Shillingford

Colin is absolutely right about AI. It won’t be like in pop culture where skynet, terminator, or ultron tries to destroy mankind. It will be private corporations in their greedy never ending pursuit of profit that will use AI to automate anything and everything out of existence until there’s nothing left for anyone. The rich will get richer, the poor will get poorer, and there will be no in between. This is the inevitable reality. Prepare now.

Nick Shillingford

I do respect that!

Max Stahl

I think I do appreciate it (and agree), but also have unmitigated faith in the resilience of the human spirit. -Rick

Hoeg Law

Good topic and well presented Matthew

Daddy T

I appreciate Hoegs optimism when it comes to AI, but I feel like he’s only thinking 50ish years from now. The real fear comes from 100+ years from now. One thing that really disturbs me is how AI is being positioned as a way to “save you time” so you can focus on your job more. I’ve seen commercials of people using AI to text their loved ones so they can keep working. But then there’s other AI out there that will make many jobs obsolete. So…..then what?

Diddy’s Dong Quest

lol, there’s a David Allen Coe song called “You never even called me by my name” and there’s a verse about how the song isn’t a perfect country western song because it never mentioned Momma, trucks, dogs, drinking and prison. So the guy who wrote the song made one more verse and it is truly a great and funny verse.

Michael Thew

Yeah, I think Hoeg and others don't fully appreciate the economic, human trauma AI could bring. It's categorically different than other major technological advancements. I do appreciate his perspective that it's appropriate not to panic, and it very well could be alright, but the risk is a little underappreciated by some people. It'll probably be okay, but we need to be aware and prepared.

Max Stahl

I don't think people are thinking through AI to it's logical conclusion. If everyone has access to their own general intelligence AI, there won't be markets for AI produced goods because those goods would be infinitely reproducible and tailored to personalised prompts. The only logical action I see anyone taking in regards to the inevitable AI revolution is Neuralink. Advancements in interfacing will be the only relevant advantage in the field once AGI is achieved.

Yalingo

I agree One Week is a fucking stupid song.

ThroatCoatGoat

If someone is talking can we please not use the keyboard !!! It’s so annoying m,mute yourself

Jonathan Alvarez

This combination exemplifies the beauty of constellation. Each combination can change the show in so many ways. Sometimes they’re goofy, sometimes they’re funny. This one felt very smart and thoughtful.

Kenneth Koepnick

Nah Matty I understand what you mean, but try listening to Wheeler Walker Jr. He'll transform what you think and know about country music!

Thebard6

Yup. Same as others. I added every rss link to my overcast and stelly isn’t showing up

Jeffrey “Brawl96” Mizrahi

Constellation is also not updating for me in Spotify. Most recent episode is last week's

Jason Chambers

I already did that for duke at the time and went well, for constellation is still missing from my feed. I use podcast addict. Tks Big D!

Armando

You’ll need to add the separate RSS feed for Constellation, Duke and any other show that isn’t Sacred. See the recent post for more details! <3 -Dustin

Dustin Furman

It's been working perfectly for me since they went to the split RSS feeds. Did you add the new feeds?

StewDog

As a duck and goose owner, I am deeply offended, Dagan. Duck eggs are quite a bit larger than chicken eggs thank you very much. 🦆

MikeU

Agreed

Dustin Shaneyfelt

Patreon needs to improve rss feeds. Last week i didn't get defining duke on my app, now is constellation.😓 I know what Colin said last week, but this is trash right now.

Armando

Excited to listen, great group!
