Sacred Symbols+, #412 | How Do You Solve A Problem Like Ubisoft?

It's me, Colin! Please welcome Punching Up co-host Gene Park and LSM legal analyst Rick Hoeg back to Sacred Symbols+ for a conversation all about French publisher Ubisoft. As you likely already know, the Guillemot family's prized company is having a very bad year. Since the beginning of this calendar year, its market cap has fallen by about half, a catastrophic turn-of-events for the once-powerful entity that controls a few of gaming's biggest IP, including Assassin's Creed, Tom Clancy, and Far Cry. Bloated beyond belief with some 20,000 employees spread across nearly 50 studios and corporate, with steadily-floundering game sales, and -- perhaps most importantly -- an increasingly-activist group of shareholders, founder and CEO Yves Guillemot may opt to team-up with Chinese conglomerate (and current minority shareholder) Tencent to bring the company private, where it can begin to be repaired. Thus, today's conversation between the three of us is all about this very topic: What's gone wrong with Ubisoft, and how can it be saved?

and he says the most random funny stuff

It is such a weird concept to me that some people actually get upset at the race/gender of the main protagonist. My only concern is it written well. With Horizon I wasn't upset that Alloy is a female, I was upset that she has as much personality as Plank from Ed, Ed and Eddy. Cause I love Control and never once thought while playing it. You know what I think this would be better with a male protagonist.

Dustin Johnson

I think it does come up a lot due to Colin being Right leaning and believing that racism is pretty much a thing of the past. He really finds it hard to fathom that people are more likely to be Upset about Shadows due to them have a racial bias that makes them not like black lead protagonists, than people being concerned about a political message. How can anyone know if the story is about racism or just has a black protagonist without actually playing it. It is something that is really weird to be concerned about especially since Nioh takes place in Japan with a white protagonist and I don't see anyone up in arms about that.

Dustin Johnson

Delusional thoughts from fantasy island lol

Aaron

I have hundreds, and I mean hundreds of physical releases. I’m not casual Colin, I will buy digital but I’m going to wait more often then not for a physical release. Most stream indie games at this point do get a physical version.

Thomas Adamson

Definitely. Jedi Fallen Order was the first decent single player Star Wars game since The Force Unleashed. People wanted that. And Outlaws? Besides its repetitive unoriginal gameplay, had a ton of bugs, destroyed saves for early access players, and has ludicrous pricing options like a version that is $120. Gamers notice this sh*t and saw right through Outlaws. Star Wars fans noticed that Respawn delivered on a game that fans wanted, which was a single player no micro transactions game, even though the game had a rocky buggy launch.

Faan

Yeah, Gene basically said if it’s popular that means it’s good, and was arguing the opposite of that, in that if it’s non popular it ain’t good. Which is a ludicrous take. People have different takes. Kinda annoying to hear that from someone who has a respectable job at WaPo. You’d think he’d be a bit less close minded.

Faan

Its not fair to compare a random opinion of value vs the free market objective price. I estimate Twitter is worth 600 Trillion dollars. I guess Elon is now a genius based on that estimate.

Seth

If X was put up for auction, it would easily sell for $44B. It is the most powerful platform in the world right now.

Lawson72

Well, the game isn’t for you then, go find one that is. It’s not that deep.

Liamburrito

I mean, I want a male character, I'm sure many others do too. It's not that deep.

Bailey Callis

I also think a lot of the discourse gets lost in regard to having a male and female protagonist. If I recall correctly, Odyssey and Valhalla were both meant to have solely female protagonists, but the higher ups believed that “women don’t sell” and made them add a male choice. Yasuke isn’t the “male” perspective. The executive producer stated in an interview that he’s a foreign perspective, so the player can discover Japan at the same time he does. There probably more to the choice than that, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Liamburrito

I guess he wouldn’t need to be. But why do we even need a male character in the first place? Naoe is enough on her own. Yasuke isn’t in the game to add the male perspective. He’s there to add the foreign perspective, which most playing the game will have in common with him. The executive produced said as much.

Liamburrito

Employees were uploading TikTok videos of day in the life at my tech job. Cappuccino in the morning, roll into my desk at 10a, send two emails, yoga class, 10 minute meeting, then finish the day with wine on the rooftop #hardwork

Alec Davis

That means Elon wiped US$35bn worth of lies out of Twitter :)

TreelineMars

Eh, I disagree. Outlaws wasn’t marketed particularly well, and definitely suffered from rusted reviews and just a straight up bad opening 5-10 hours. The fandom loves Dash Rendar, and he’s the definition of “not Han Solo.” There’s plenty of space for non-Jedi/Stormtrooper/ship flying games in Star Wars

Jared R

It went from being worth 44 billion to now estimated at 9 billion. Saying it's fine is kinda wild.

Jacob Lesperance

Twitter is not doing great. Went from being worth 44Billion to 9Billon. How on earth is that a positive thing?lol. That's hilarious he said it's doing good.

Jacob Lesperance

I don't buy a game if it doesn't have a physical release. Small indie studios get a pass on this. I didn't buy Alan Wake 2 cause it didn't have a physical. As soon as it got a physical announcement, I ordered the CE. Publishers can go all digital for all I care, I got plenty to keep me busy for the rest of my life, lol. You could also make the argument Colin is a casual for only playing on one platform. He's clearly not, but just pointing out it would be equally absurd for me to make that statement about him.

Jacob Lesperance

A game being good is not enough for it to succeed. The market is so saturated that being good means nothing. Good games get left behind all the time, especially today with how many games are released. And Colin calling people casuals for making that choice is wild. I could say the same thing about him cause he only plays on Playstation.

Jacob Lesperance

Great insights y’all - this is why I subscribe!

Jeffrey Rommel

Was holding off on AW2 for this reason entirely. I need to check off some more games on my backlog but will probably scoop it up towards the end of the year

Seany Mac

Hoeg is pretty funny to me. He seems to like every game that most people hate haha. It’s kind of endearing

Brian

Why would he have to be a samurai?

The Rose Experience

It’s also clear that no physical options can hurt big releases specifically IE: Alan Wake 2. I personally didn’t buy it because it didn’t have a physical edition and now that it’s out I don’t see myself rushing out to snag it.

The Rose Experience

It is fine, not much has changed at all in terms of functionality and bots were always there, every platform has seen a huge spike in them. Some of the changes have worked, some have sucked, but for firing 90% of staff and losing very little in terms of functionality that’s a W all in all.

The Rose Experience

Star Wars outlaws in a fundamentally broken game. It could have possibly been a Half decent game if they took more time on it and it wasn’t broken in almost every way

Brian

I don't think that is a fair to blame Elon for that. There has been a huge ramp up in bots across all platforms. Look at YouTube, its like 50% bots on every video. I think there is a huge ramp up in resources being poured into bots and disinformation right now. Its nuts everywhere

Seth

I’ve cleaned it every few months, only had my current one for a year.

Josh Lucas

I have to slightly agree that the lighting is pretty awful across all dark main areas in the game. I’m constantly tweaking the brightness and HDR settings

Daniel E

your last point is fair for sure. that’s a good perspective

Gene Park

Continuing to act like twitter is fine after downsizing by 90% is insane. The amount of bots in the replies of almost every tweet is mind blowing, the platform is beyond fucked

Dan Morgan

Hoeg being outed as a skull & bones enjoyer is never not funny

Lizurd

Something no one ever brings up about Star Wars outlaws underselling is that most of the general public does not want to play a Star Wars game that does not involve playing as a Jedi or a clone trooper/storm trooper. The best selling Star Wars games all have those things and is why the next respawn Jedi game will sell well and why the KOTOR remake will probably sell regardless of quality. Nobody wants to play as not Han Solo or some space bounty hunter, there are a million space bounty hunter with a gun games. People want to use the force and slice people with a laser sword or be in an epic ground battle.

Derik Mozzarella

Rebirth?

Zachary

Freaking shimmer gate pt2 with Colin lol. Alan wake 2 did indeed have some weird artifacts going on with performance mode but I thought silent hill 2 actually looked great and the puddles he’s referring to looking weird are just really low reflection quality ray tracing.

Zachary

Have you cleaned your ps5 lately?

Yeti ATL

100% agree on the “politics in games” discussion. I honestly think that when many people say they “don’t want politics in their media,” what they really mean is that they don’t want to feel like they’re receiving a sermon rather than a story. There are some people who DO freak out at the mere sight of a woman or minority in a lead role (for reasons that don’t go much beyond simple misogyny or racism), but I think it’s more that people would rather see stories that work as *stories* and can be engaging for anyone, even if you disagree with some of the ideas being put forth. People say “all media is inherently political,” which is true insofar as the person making the game is going to have certain beliefs that manifest within the story, but there’s a difference between that and a game saying “Our politics are right and if you disagree you are wrong/evil/stupid/etc.” You have to tell an actual story that goes deeper than that, otherwise you’re just being uncreative and intellectually lazy.

Supes

Colin, you kinda remind me of the guy who said you were in a DEI marriage.

Caleb Peacock

I think it just comes up a lot cause it’s such a hot topic on socials, and in turn becomes a topic on the shows.

Adam Martinez

I haven’t played any PS5 games that have as many graphical issues as Silent Hill 2

Josh Lucas

Colin you are not alone in having a lot of lightning/reflections/graphical issues with Silent Hill 2 remake. Basically right off the bat the game looked like garbage with so many graphical glitches in the first scene. It has gotten a little better as the game has gone on but I still have been left very unimpressed with the state of this game.

Josh Lucas

Gene “motherfucker I’m finishing my God Damned thought” Park And honestly I respect it

Bogey

I love Mercenaries 2! One of the first open world games I played

Gooch Gobbler

I like plenty of stuff that is clearly kind of bad. Like I love a ton of really dumb, ignorant rap and pop music. I understand guilty pleasures, but I know hero shooters really well and wish the game got more of a chance. Siege was pretty trash when it launched too and is now one of the best shooters out there. I just don't care so much about what the characters look like or the story, the game felt really good to play to me. I don't play dozens of hours of Valorant because of how Reyna looks, but how it feels to play as her

Gooch Gobbler

Noticed this a lot over the last year. He’s obsessed with race, race politics, and diversity in games in a way that is incredibly weird.

Daniel E

The Longest Journey is an amazing game! Glad to hear Hoeg mention it. That and Gabriel Knight 1 are probably my favorite old school point and click adventure games

Ignorant Primate

Some bad games rule. One of my favorite games from the ps3 gen is Mercenaries 2 and it's busted as hell. I still had more fun with it than most games that have come out since

Seany Mac

Agreed. Racism is brought up in almost every podcast Colin is on at this point. He’s like a racism enthusiast which is off putting

c0bra_dog

It’s ok to like bad stuff . I don’t understand why people all of the sudden can’t admit to that.

Pianopower

I mean I just really like hero shooters and Destiny like gunplay lol my most played shooters are Valorant, OW, and Siege so idk I just like that stuff and team based play

Gooch Gobbler

This guy Colin always seems way too excited about racism. That shit is weird lol.

The Central Long Islander

No one told you that you can't love ai generated shooters.

Context Should Matter

Gene, I loved what I played of Concord! Quit trying to make those of us who liked it think it sucks. I'm with Hoeg, not every shooter has to be streamable/competitive

Gooch Gobbler

Hell I've played every Far Cry and could barely get past the intro of 6 lol I gave up. Boring as hell

Gooch Gobbler

Same brother, same. Those games are incredible. I like the weird Ubi. Excited to hop into the prince of persia dlc in a month or so

Gooch Gobbler

I think he means holding back the industry because then PS could make more money off digital copies. I'm not THAT concerned with PS making oodles more money. They can make a profit off of physical. I just switched to digital cause I like the faster loading, PS rewards, Bestbuy has fucked me over many times, not enough time to resell my physical games (my main reason for buying physical), and I get free PS giftcards from work. Also helps keep the fiance happy with less boxes and mess lol

Gooch Gobbler

I disagree that switching the release dates of Outlaws and Fallen Order would’ve equaled the same result. Fallen Order is a better quality game.

NeO JD

At least he knows 5 is the best

NeO JD

Hey Colin, small thing regarding "we don't have enough codes" - I worked in PR for Creative Assembly and we generated often about 10,000 codes for our games and DLC. About 95% of those codes were sent to online retailers and marketplaces like HumbleBundle and others. When I'd send codes to press and influencers, we did actually run out from time to time. Generating them wasn't really that big of a deal, it'd raise some eyebrows maybe and could take a few days, but you can of course just keep generating codes at least with Valve anyways. On console, keys are also generated and sold in bulk to online sites. This is a fascinating and in my view "underground" part of the industry people don't discuss. Websites like cdkeys offer preorders way in advance for PlayStation games, and are allocated codes by publishers who sell to them in bulk for discounted prices.

WhatDarrenPlays

But is anyone really saying that? I can't help but think 'no games' means where are the 1st party releases, not that there's literally nothing to play.

Your Boi Nicky V

I think the only reason there was a scalp to be gotten for Shadows is that it escalated from internet shit slinging to a slap fight between prominent historians. Any other time Ubi could have shrugged it off. I still think Ubisoft shat the bed here. There was a better story to tell with Yasuke before they butchered the history, what ever that may be now. The history before this slap fight was that he was a noble's court ornament. Imagine him as a little finger like character. Thought of as little more than a jester but secretly a spy master directing assassinations and other shadowy plots. You would have a fantastic black character, an opportunity to play as a Japanese samurai and you wouldn't have had to screw around with history as much.

AngelOfCake

Sacred Symbols Plus #412- Ya Know about Ubisoft Ya Know

Craig Carter

Despite what Colin says, it's pretty evident that he DOES have a problem with folks who enjoy physical. His tone gets very condescending and holier than thou when talking about physical vs. digital. He's also insinuated on multiple occasions that physical is holding the industry back without providing any facts or specific argument to back up that claim. Sure the folks that make physical their religion are annoying af just like all fringes of anything in life. For most in this sphere though it's just about preserving consumer choice.

Seany Mac

I wonder where this comes from too. It comes up on every second show. Microsuck doesn't get it but Playstation gets it in spades. Are people looking over the fence at Ninty and complaining about exclusives or first party games? It definitely can't be the number of games on offer. I think we tipped over edge of if we stopped making games and lived to a hundred, you're never getting through your backlog even if you gave up on sleep. It's the oddest bloody complaint.

AngelOfCake

His repeated comment on the topic of Ubisoft choosing Yasuke as a protagonist also feels like he’s talking around the his main issue.

Yasuke Yosha

I found myself very taken aback by Colin's remarks about people who refuse to play games without physical copies. I've listened to every episode of Sacred Symbols until this point, and in recent memory, I can think of few games Colin has played that don't have physical options. Many if not most games of note receive physical versions at some point - perhaps not day one, but in due time. Panzer Paladin? Has one. Gal Guardians? Has one. Tunic? Has one. Power Wash Simulator? Has one. Eiyuden Chronicles? Both games have them. Crow Country? Bet your bottom dollar it's coming. Doki Doki Literature Club? Has one. The list goes on. I say this to challenge the premise that people who opt for physical are casual, or not engaging with the broad range of games avaliable on digital storefronts. It's been said ad nauseum that waiting to play a game after release often comes with the benefit of improved, more content complete experiences. Perhaps Colin is underestimating the volume of games that do receive physical copies (if not in the NTSC region, in other regions with region free English language support).

Cameron

Assassin’s Creed has always focused on those underrepresented in history fighting back against the powers that would oppress them. The powers in this time being the samurai and the Portuguese. The samurai oppressing Naoe and her people. The Portuguese enslaving Yasuke. Both fit the theme perfectly. Having a Japanese Samurai guy just wouldn’t, as he would be the one doing the oppressing and is overly represented.

Liamburrito

Dont cope post on me

Brandon V

Oh no doubt man

Gene Park

Nah you gotta play it it’s really different than the rest

Yeti ATL

You would have loved to party in Montreal

Lemonworld

I’m kinda tired of ppl thinking a game like Avatar is new just because it has Avatar art. You’ve played that game 7,000 times. It just had different art assets. This is why I skipped. I need new games. Not just new art.

Jimmer

No one under 70 should find a PC difficult to use. Adults who aren’t losers or are even halfway decent with money can afford a PC. Consoles are for kids, casuals, and stubborn autistics like Colin who would need to be rushed to a hospital if they ever opened their mind up to anything outside of what they became obsessed with as a child. Yeah, I said it.

Jimmer

You can largely choose who you want to play as. It is silly. There are points where you are one or the other but it seems like Syndicate where you can choose freely.

Noah Friscopp

Past trophies are probably the best excuse for staying, but thankfully Steam has them, with all the same data as trophies do, and you can show them on your profile and highlight certain ones. Multiple steam achievement modules that you can add to your steam profile. Also a good chance that PlayStation will soon have a PC app, that gives you the PlayStation trophy as well as the steam achievement for their games.

Brandon V

Enter adulthood? Relax a bit dude. I’ve had a far better experience on console than I ever had on pc. Console is superior

RIPIT

It's obvious why he plays it on console. Trophies.

Rancid Raisins

Hoeg permanent show on LSM!!!

Ryan

Gonna be a great episode. Always down for more Gene on sacred ❤️❤️

Addiholic

I guess I‘m a casual-gamer bc I only play games that have a physical release. With only physical games my backlog just keeps getting bigger & I play like 30 games a year. There are to many games to ever catch up.

Fisnik Krasniqi

i know i’m just making fun of canada lol

Gene Park

Colin has a gaming PC. In his case it is stubbornness. He doesn’t even have the curiosity to boot a AAA game up on it and see how vastly superior it is in every way imaginable. Ease of use is not a sufficient argument anymore, it’s not 2012. You can have a console sized PC hooked up to your TV that launches directly to steam big picture mode( console like, controller controlled UI) and be used identically to a console. You would never even need to see the windows OS. Most console gamers would build a PC if they could afford it. I’m not talking about those people. I am talking about people who can afford it, who claim to love games, yet continue to play gimped versions of them and make ridiculous excuses like “ease of use” as to why they don’t upgrade. It’s like claiming to love movies, being able to afford an OLED, but you continue to watch them on your 27inch 1989 Sony CRT with a 4:3 faded screen.

Brandon V

I cannot fathom the thinking behind the "there's no games" argument. I'm currently playing Dragon's Dogma 2 while trying to find time for a replay of Alien Isolation, some more Palworld, and always have a Stellaris campaign going on the back burner. I've also decided to take up Colin's Doki Doki challenge after DD2. I know absolutely nothing about it, so I'm a perfect candidate.

Michael Rogers

Bums me out that people slept on it. That game was dope as hell. Platted it.

Alan Wake 2 - Alan WOKE

Can somebody clarify to me if Yasuke is the main protagonist and the Japanese girl is like a minor one? Or do they both share the spotlight? If it’s the latter, I don’t know why Colin and Gene are acting like there isn’t a Japanese protagonist here.

Diddy’s Dong Quest

Here comes Brandon again with his chest out, it’s not people being stubborn and sticking with the insufficient machine, it’s the ease of use and the much lower price of entry, not everyone can afford a gaming rig

Daddy T

In both those examples though, the game would totally be political by even having abortion in the game to begin with. My point isn’t even that I disagree that mastectomy scars are political, I just think that gay relationships are also political, and *most* things are political. I think whatever it is we’re trying to discuss here just needs more precise wording. There’s still totally people that see gay relationships in games and other media, no matter what context they’re in, as pushing some sort of agenda by their very inclusion. Idk, the whole conversation about mastectomy scars just hasn’t sat right with me because it feels like everyone is talking around their main issue by making it about it “not fit into fantasy worlds” or “by including it, it’s taking something else away.” Those are just not great arguments about an issue I really think is worth talking about. Can’t we just straight up have a conversation about whether or not we think that the acceptance of body dysmorphia is a good thing?

Jared R

It's all about how it's presented. Think about if a game included abortions which would result in the evil ending. I would be disappointed if that was just how it was presented, not because I disagree with the message but because there's no tact. However, if such was done through the in-game world and through interesting mechanics, maybe I could at the very least appreciate its attempt at a message. Mastectomy scars being a toggle is a clear instance where the game mechanic was downstream from the message. People just generally don't articulate this point.

Dick Stillhard

Yeah, but specifically in media. I mean, it was seen as a “big deal” to have two women kiss in the background of the last Star Wars movie. It still feels pretty “political.” Edit to add further thought: It just feels like the way it’s being used can sometimes be applicable or not depending on what the speaker finds acceptable or not. If you don’t think gay marriage is a big deal, then it’s not “political,” but if you’re against it, then it is “political.” Same thing with breast removal scars.

Jared R

Gay marriage may be recent, but gay relationships are ancient.

Melchizedek

man, I know this isn't realistic at all, but I really just wish Ubisoft would ditch all these floundering IP and just become the Rayman company. Rayman Origins and Rayman Legends are some of the most incredible 2D platformers in gaming history. They're so, *so* good. It's a travesty that Legends sold as poorly as it did, because I think it's basically mandatory for anyone who's a fan of 2D platforming. The rhythm-based levels alone put it in the top tier of the genre.

Supes

Assassins creed, far cry, watch dogs and a tom Clancy’s game could all sell between 15 and 20 million with every release while just dance rabids rayman etc all get smaller/cheaper games out too

start a infection

But then which games should I play? WHERE ARE THE GAMES?

Nergal131

Ubisoft Sherbrooke is in Quebec, Gene!

Lemonworld

Ubisoft is much like Bethesda; stuck in 2013. I want to see Ubisoft cut back on the nonstop releases and have their BOTW or Elden Ring moment. Show me the next evolution of a Ubisoft game.

Diddy’s Dong Quest

Great line up 🔥

Adam Martinez

I love gene so much

Brenden

Control had a similar issue. I think Remedy's graphics are a bit overrated. Good games though.

Mike Held

That flickering/lighting issue Colin keeps having is an inherent console issue due to low resolution and bad upscaling with low-medium graphic settings. All dark games are going to do that. Most console gamers don’t notice, because they have no comparison to the clear crisp picture you get on PC, when console gamers do start noticing these issues, they tend to migrate to PC and enter adulthood, because they love the medium and want to experience it uncompromised. When you want to be stubborn and stick with the insufficient machine, you’re just going to have to get past the issue, or just not be able to play most horror games.

Brandon V

I struggle to see how breast removal scars and gay relationships are more or less “political” than one another. Is it just because gay marriage is legal now and nobody’s really going after it anymore in the political sphere? Because that’s still a pretty recent thing.

Jared R

I find it strange that Colin didn't notice any dip in quality in Far Cry 6 compared to all the other Far Cry games, especially 3 and 4. It's a massive step down and he thought it was just as good as the other ones. I'm a massive Far Cry fan as well.

Mike Held

1. Fire 80% of its workforce. 2. Ubisoft fixed.

Brandon V

Avatar is the best Ubisoft game of late I highly recommend playing it with the HUD off

Yeti ATL

Fixing Ubisoft should be the easiest publisher to fix, balance out the releases of all of their IPs and don’t release any of them more frequently than every 3 years

Love that we’re getting so much Hoeg!
