Sacred Symbols+, #398 | Bungie Magic, But Low on MP

While Sony's $3.6 billion purchase of renowned developer Bungie was contentious in some corners from the get-go (including here on Sacred Symbols), it's also true that the deal came loaded with a ton of potential. But only two years later, it's become increasingly obvious that Sony, well, got got. With a significantly lowered headcount, cancelled projects, a spin-out incubation team, lost personnel to SIE, and more, there's a lot to go through above and beyond what we'd ever cover on Sacred Symbols proper. Thus, I (Colin) convened three Bungie Enjoyers from our ranks -- Chris Ray Gun, as well as Punching Up's Gene Park and Summon Sign's Brad Ellis -- to help me get into the weeds. Will Marathon succeed? Could Destiny 2 survive? Should Pete Parsons go? Was Destiny spin-off Payback a good idea? Does Project Gummybears have a shot as a first party title? Is there even such a thing as "Bungie Magic" anymore?

A few notes on FFXIV since no one on the show talked about it in the comparison section: Vanilla ARR does not exist as it used to because the devs have continued to put work into updating the old content for the game. Several quests have been removed, several dungeons have been redesigned, all of the zones have been made to allow flying mounts, and you can solo most if not all dungeons with trusts (I haven’t been keeping up with these updates). These updates, along with the level sync system syncing you down to lower levels, keep the old content from breaking under the power of warriors of light crashing through. Basically they’ve done the work to keep this content feeling somewhat relevant several years into the game. Though you can bypass mechanics in a lot of fights still lol. Also if someone just needs to clear, you can run it unsynced and fuck everything up…it’s actually really fun. I’ve soloed a bunch of extreme difficulty bosses with that.

Other than IW, and their spiritual successors, no one does shooting mechanics better than bungie. Everything they do is good, just might not be for you. I love that Sony acquired them. I’m not rooting for Sony economics lol, I touch grass. I just like having the option to play whatever they make forever. Marathon will be good and the spinoff studios title will be good too. The talent left but really their last installment of destiny proves there’s still talent there. Bungie is the type of studio where people want to work, playing their games get you into development. There’s always going to be enthusiastic game makers with talent wanting to work there. Seems just like bad management, but their mechanics and art design are top tier.
