The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part (VIDEO SCRIPT)

Story
● It’s a weaker narrative than the first when you compare this movie’s overall themes to it,
but the sequel’s execution makes it feel like its on par with the first
● Despite the knowledge you go into the movie from the first one, the delivery of the story
and its moral is still pretty clever
● Doesn’t feel like it’s progression is hindered by the way the world works, either; both the
main narrative and the real life counterpart compliment each other pretty nicely
Characters
● Emmet himself didn’t stand out as much as he did in 1, but he was the vessel that
needed the narrative to work. That was both impressive and disappointing. He’s never
that much of a character until the end of the second act, so there’s no connection
because of how plain he is, but you still kinda root for him because so much of what’s
going on in the story is centered around him.
● WyldStyle on the other hand got boosted way up in the character department. We see a
lot more of her flaws, her insecurities and development progression as a result of both
Emmet’s actions and her own.
Likes
● The set design and use of animation was on par with the first
● The buildup to the twist and its resolution was nice, and was hinted at during one point in
the film if you could catch it in time. I thought that was pretty clever
Dislikes
● Emmet and his lack of development and personality. After the events of the first movie,
this would’ve been the perfect opportunity to have him grow in various directions, but he
remains stagnant. And it doesn’t help that the movie reinforces his lack of growth and
development both in the narrative and in the other characters. At this point, he’s one of
the only things holding the main portion of this franchise back.
Overall
● Lego Movie 2 is a fun sequel with a lot of well executed ideas, but is just a step or two
below the first installment.
● While the way the narrative and moral was formed, it kinda suffers from a stagnant
protagonist, but makes up for it in proper development and growth from WyldStyle
● These movies -- along with Into the Spider-Verse -- are proof that Phil Lord and Chris
Miller do their best work when they’re writing, and should probably stick to that (opinion)
● Catch a matinee if you’re gonna see it in theaters.
