Gintama is a show that likes to troll its audience into believing the story will finally start taking itself seriously, but it takes its time to actually do so. Some people laugh along the jokes between major arcs, but others get frustrated waiting in the beginning. Although, I'd say I think a lot of newcomers go through this at the start of the show. You gotta tell yourself that you watch this show to have a good laugh and to not expect anything else. The character development will come in due time.

IF you don't want to watch the reaction, the short version is childhood friends dreamed of growing up to be honki people and one guy never stopped thinking about it while the other just moved on and grew up cause he didn't really care that much.
