If the soul is weaker than Jinwoo, he can take them by force. Example being the ice bears and the A rank guy that he killed, they didn't have a choice cuz they were weaker than him. The elf was significantly stronger than Jinwoo so the only option would've been for the elf soul to allow him to take it. That's what happened with Igris last season, Jinwoo originally couldn't take Igris' soul either because Igris was too strong and he tried over and over again. It was only after he basically begged Igris saying "you're waiting for a King that's never coming back so serve me instead" and then Igris let him take him. The elf hated Jinwoo so he was never gonna let Jinwoo take him and since he was stronger than him, Jinwoo couldn't take him by force

His current army’s Ranks are: Normal, Elite, and Knight (there’s higher ranks but that’s in the future). His normal shadow knights and normal ice bears are at the Normal Rank, the shadow mages and the bear boss are at the Elite Rank, and Igris and Iron are at the Knight rank. Only shadows that are or surpass Knight rank can be named. They don’t have to be stronger than Jin-woo.

It wasn’t the nicest decision but I can understand why he’d take the strongest people and prioritize clearing the dungeon as opposed to trying to protect two E ranks and a C rank, especially since originally they weren’t even supposed to be on the mission and were added last minute. Even the people outside assumed most people would die or fail the dungeon entirely. Then right after fighting for days straight and watching your squad members die you come back to everyone eating and kekeing, I’d crash out too lmao. That mean somebody had supplies and didn’t say nothing or somebody hella strong and didn’t say nothing
