Watching a sub when you don't speak the original language is not watching it in its original language. You're reading a translation instead of listening to a translation. Sometimes the dub is a better translation. Sometimes the sub is a better translation. Sometimes the VA for the Japanese actors is so good you should do the sub regardless. And sometimes the VA for the dub is really good, and you should listen to that. I've watched the first 10 in both dub and sub. For this particular series, the dub is superior to the sub, all I'm saying.

okay enjoy it how you want that's always okay and I wouldn't fault anyone for how they choose to experience a piece of media. The thing that's lost here is that it is a script being translated by an 3rd party group who does not have an open dialogue during the translation process with the original scriptwriter or VA director who does work directly with the scriptwriter/director (basically always the case with anime subtitling and dubbing this one included) then being VA'd by people who have extremely limited direct reference material to go off of such as the actual animation, storyboarding material, original VA work (the massive majority of the time this is case as said by numerous people in the industry but its rarely known for sure when its the case or not because it isn't really ever noted) and are instead left with typically at most notes on length of dialogue and brief tonal notes which are also translated and then directed to them by someone from that company who again has effectively no direction from the original team. So regardless of how good the dubbed VA's acting is because of the inherit interpretation involved in translation without correction/direction as well as not working with the people actually making the series, having less reference material than the orginal VA team and having only input and direction for how the VA should be handled coming from people with no direction from the actual creators meaning no feedback from people who actually know what it should be going for dub work and also subtitles will always be flawed and meaningfully less true to the intent of the people who made it. So if you want to get as close to the intended experience as possible your outside of a few hyper niche scenarios (like Cyberpunk Edgerunners) going to be getting a less cohesively and accurately depicted experience by having more third party involvement, so at least with subs your getting the director/scriptwriter intended version of the acting rather than some random 3rd party companies interpretation of the minimal material provided. This was of course originally a manga written in Japanese by a Japanese person and animated/directed by a Japanese studio and then had original VA work done with that untranslated and directly guided work in Japanese so obviously its going to be more cohesive and inherently understanding of intent and nuance with the original VA than when its translated and directed without guidance by a non-culturally or linguistically Japanese group. As for understanding the language or not I agree it plays a big part but its a sliding scale. If you know none of the language at least your getting the actual first hand directed emotion and general performance for the work with the original audio, if you know a simple conversational level and a handful of extra vocabulary then the difference in subtitles and spoken dialogue becomes relatively easy to get most of the differences out of the way even if you don't understand all of what's being said. I'm a firm believer in sticking to as close to the original version of any work as you can and taking both the acting and wording through the lens of a virtually no oversight retranslation is losing a lot. I know most people likely don't care about this idea of getting the most authentic version of a work nearly as much as others do but it's absolutely undeniable that the more alterations you make especially without direction from the primary visionaries behind it the further you get from the actual experience. So sure maybe you like the English VA more or just enjoy hearing it in a language you understand and that's perfectly fine but I do think it's kinda absurd to ever call something that's essentially a third party rewrite with no oversight a "better" version of something because it's objectively further from and less cohesively done than the original work.
