Season 1 to 6 has been roughly 2 years. People are acting like Daniel's been like this for 34 years, ever since the end of the 3rd movie. He only teached Miyagi-Do to Sam when she was younger, and stopped himself when she lost interest. So literally only in this 2 year span has he been adamant about respecting Miyagi-Do and teaching it the way he learned it because it was his first time opening a Dojo and teaching other kids to defend themselves like Mr. Miyagi taught him. Within those 2 years, he's changed and accepted letting the kids make their own choices when it comes to Karate. As for Miyagi's past, all Daniel has done is gone to the Boxing Gym to ask about the news article, and he asked about the headband at the tournament and went to what he thought was a legit address to somone who might know Mr. Miyagi. Other than that, we've just seen him feel conflicted about it. That's literally it.

I wish Roshi would show Daniel a little grace. The movies and the show's reiterated that Daniel's love for Mr. Miyagi is immeasurable and that he idolized him. Had Mr. Miyagi told Daniel about the mistakes he made and how he changed his life around, it would have been different. Instead, Daniel finds out about all of this now, after Mr. Miyagi's passed away and it's left him rattled and wanting to to know the truth. Regardless of if Mr. Miyagi actually did it and changed or if it's all a big misunderstanding and it was a freak accident, not knowing the truth means others will be justified in calling him a "liar & a thief" like Johnny did at the end of Part 1. Daniel just doesn't want Mr. Miyagi to be thought of as less than, when people never even truly knew him. Can we really judge him for that?
