To add context, Scanlan actually died during this entire battle and had to be revivified (last minute resurrection spell that can only happen within a limited amount of turns before its too late) in the live game show. In the show it seems they took the moment he was out for some time and placed it here to have some weight to his situation. The cast of Critical Role have stated that some of the characters deaths will happen in the show but some of the less significant or heavy deaths in the whole series might be relegated to a different outcome that is very similar to that moment without completely erasing it. Example, Grog had his entire soul devoured by Craven Edge and died but they changed it to him being physically weak to have that be the outcome instead for the show last season. And they also have their own unique answer to why Scanlan doesn't wake up from going unconscious as well which sorta answers the question too lmao

Wow, they really deviated from how the end of the battle with Thordak went in the actual game. After killing Thordak, it's Vox Machina that actually IMMEDIATELY betrays Raishan and attacks her in Thordak's lair. Raishain then proceeds to absolutely DESTROY the party with high level magic before making her escape. She cast Meteor Swarm, a 9th level spell (the highest level of magic available to a mortal) that basically just lets the caster drop 3 meteors ala Madara lmao.

It would be a good idea imo to go that route. Based on the ending scene for this season, they could introduce "you know who" and bring in Tary for s4, and then focus on "you know who" for S5. If not, it would feel very rushed to shove all that into 1 more 12 episode season 🤷‍♀️

In DnD, Pike plays as a paladin, which means her power, her magic, comes from belief. Wizard’s power comes from intelligence, learning spells and how they work, sorcerers magic is innate and based in wisdom which means they are born with their potential, bard magic is derived from charisma which translates to coxing the world around them to their own image, and paladins have the potential for magic but they have to anchor it to something. Sometimes it’s direct like believing in a god, sometimes it’s abstract like belief in a concept, say order or chaos, and rarely it’s in oneself. The devil was basically telling her to stop believing in a god and instead believe in herself, that’s why she still has magic even if she chooses to forsake her religion. In the actual game, this would have some class changes, like she swaps out for different skills, but it’s common for paladins to have a change of heart and have to find something new to believe in.
