And it's very strange that the mom was stabbed, since there was nothing pointing to that in the flashback. I can see the brother using his powers and wanting to kill the dad but I don't see him killing his mom.

If he was in the girl then suddenly felt he was in the mom then that could mean that is when she discovered her powers because she was also holding the photo and looked at it.
