I disagree. A lot of media has substance that the creators actually care about and that is central to the story. This show just has no substance. Sure the fights look cool, but besides that it’s just fluff; Completely different from the Neon Genesis Evangelions, Red Dead Redemption 2s, Kendrick Lamars, and 12 Years a Slaves of the world. And if you say those have no purpose other than to just kill time then you need to reconsider what living means.

I like this take @PJ. Of course sometimes we want a change of pace and there’s plenty alternative anime out there that doesn’t follow the typical formula but sometimes it is nice to have a general idea of where the story is going and just going along for the ride.

Yes, he literally told to the headmaster that "the problem is that he's not aiming to become a scholar, but a magus vander" when she listed a ton of different fields he could path for (such as artificer, healer etc), so clearly he wouldn't give a fuck if Will wasn't a fucking brainlet like he is, which is the only thing he's objecting to on principle (and founded in truth for a reason after all, you can't become The Archmage if you don't have mana after all. I mean outside of Skyrim of course)

Either you read ahead to see that he could use magic, I haven't BTW, or you're guessing. As of the most recent episode there is nothing that suggests he could use magic no matter how hard he tries. Have you never heard the saying that there is an exception to every rule?

It's 100% his own fault for not being able to use magic (something that's basically unheard of, which makes me presume that even normie pissants can use magic, albeit probably only at some party trick level or w/e), and also being at the city that keeps shitting out mages as its sole purpose (as the City of Magic)

Yeah it's understandable, that's why I can't hate the teacher yet. If he stays the same, it'll probably get annoying but I feel like that's not the case (?). I'll look forward to how he develops as a character! I always enjoy the Snape-type characters when done well lol

Ye whenever there's a "copycat anime" it's honestly super subjective as your enjoyment depends heavily on how much the similarities bug you and how generic it feels to you. Personally, I liked Kaiju No. 8. but it was definitely getting a bit boring for me by the end of the season because it wasn't enticing me too much and felt pretty generic. Haven't quite had my fill of this genre yet and the adaptation is very pretty so I'm gonna keep watching. Totally fine if it's too bland, cliche or predictable for you, I get it!

You got the OP swordsman who has it rough thanks to established power (Sion and Edward some punks fr) who has a blonde roommate (im assuming thats Will's roommate) and wants to climb the tower in the middle of the city housing the greatest peeps in all of the land to get to a childhood friend. New spins on the same type of story is pretty standard. Like you could compare it to the obvious anime but even to shit as far as HP and other western media. The teachers imo, are very well written(from what we have seen) and that's why I'm interested in the show. I've also not delved into the manga yet, and i don't take readers opinions seriously till i read it myself(don't get me started on how awful the JJK communities takes are 90% of the time lol). Especially when it comes to stuff like frustration in shows, because i feel like a lot of that can come from expectations the community/audience puts on the show/source material rather than what the material actually delivered. So ill prob give this first season a shot and if im still with it by the end ill hit up the manga.

As another reader the story builds a lot more later but as of right now the main selling point is how solid the animation is. I would say this and ragna crimson had similar hype as manga but the clear difference in animation quality is why this will get 2 to 3 times more reactions than the other

Manga reader for this, black clover and mashle and i can say it is bland. It really just feels like black clover but more light novely than shouen jumpy. But it is still pretty enjoyable if you accept it for what it is and the studio is doing the animation really well. Just fun

First of all I want to say I'm not saying this to hate or anything these are just my genuine thoughts and opinions. I harbor no ill will towards the show or the people who like it, you're entitled to your own opinion. So I watched the first two episodes of this series and I want to ask does anyone else think this is a bit... bland? It just doesn't do much to separate it and make it stand out as a story. The plot isn't really unique, the story beats are predictable, and the character designs scream cliché anime series. And no spoilers but from what I'm hearing from manga readers the future plot is just frustrating. Not sure I'll be returning for more episodes, but again that's just me and I wanted to share my thoughts. Thanks for reading!
