He's Zenitsu's fellow apprentice to the former Thunder Hashira in his origin flashback all the way back in S1, so he definitely survived that attack after the snitch since he's definitely older in his flashback.

Very few demon slayers have a reason that's different than revenge for lost loved ones or being raised in a demon slayer family because...that makes the most sense and it's the norm. The DS corps is not even recognized by the government; you're not gonna get a bunch of backstories that involve straight up recruitment with pamphlets lol. The exceptions are characters like Mitsuri (find a husband), Inosuke (crazy mfer beat up demon slayers that came up his mountain), Kanao (bought by demon slayers & raised), & Zenitsu (debt paid by demon slayer & raised).

Also, as at least one other person pointed out, the kid who let the demon into the temple is the same guy from Zenitsu's flashback in season 1. He was the asshole throwing peaches at our boy and insulting him for being overly familiar with their teacher.
