It’s a post apocalyptic thing where giant spires rose from the ground, and arthropod creatures resembling pre-Triassic era animals came with them. These arthropods would parasitize humans, turning the humans into constantly evolving and adapting feral beasts with exosuit-like armor. Eventually, they can regain their sapience by consuming biomass, but they loose all memory of who they were. What’s happening in Kaiju No. 8 seems extremely similar to the nightstalkers.
