As far as I remember, in the book the Sophons can't actually take away sight/make them just not see things like making the killer invisible to the naked eye. That's a purely tv show thing. The single Sophon just passes through the eyes back and forth really fast fast to make the numbers. At first it only appeared on photos the main character took with his film camera, before his eyes. It doesn't have a lasting physical effect as it's just a proton. It would have to be doing it constantly to every human on the planet. Admittedly I don't know the math on that but it might be impossible even at near the speed of light.

Pretty much we have seen that they can take away our sight and make us see stuff they want. pretty much they could take away everyone's sight for one that would stop our progression pretty fast. Or if like there are too much people to do that too since they can send light directly into your eyes to see shit they could have just burned up your retina by sending a shit ton of light into it and making you blind and then you just do that till everyone is blind and the species is fucked. Another idea: Why don't the Sophons just hack the targeting computers of every ICBM on the planet and nuke humanity to extinction? 400 years of humanity doing its thing would certainly lead to the climate collapse, and one of the tongue and cheek proposals to combat global warming is LITERALLY a nuclear winter. So the way they will "kill" our science is annoying. It's not directly stated here, but the way it would work is whenever someone does an experiment they don't like they just shoot something at it like if your trying to figure out nuclear fusion in a particle accelerator. Right before the experiment begins you just shoot shit it ruins the results they become random or unlogical because they fucked with it and we don't know how, and then the scientist can't get any useful info out of the experiment. You can compare it to you being asked to finish reading a 200 page book because it has important info in it but each page the language changes to a entirely new one. And not as in from french to english more like english to alien language that does not exist on earth. So for each page you have to use only the 1 page from that langue to figure out everything about this new language just to read 1 page and after you do it again for 200 times. So every step of progress in science they don't want us knowing will now be like 200 times longer (just a random amount) because they have to first figure out how the santi changed the conditions of the experiment and then try to figure out how the experiment would have gone if the santi would not have interfered. tl;dr, The way they going to "kill" science is by making it so annoyingly frustrating to get any progression that hopefully we won't progress fast enough to be able to defeat them when they arrive

Sophons are far more powerful in this series than the books (they can't hack every electronic device on the planet). Why would the San-Ti even bother trying to slow down our science when they could simply strip humanity of our electronics easily? Hack every device into non-functionailty boom we're in the Stone Age and fighting each other to death. The entire idea that a human made hard-drive would survive several tons of ship falling on it and exploding on is frankly ridiculous, but the book doesn't care about that either. The Sophons are simply far, far too powerful in the show and it takes a tremendous suspension of belief to understand why the San-Ti would even bother with these tedious plans instead of just devastating our society remotely. Hell, even if they didn't destroy our electronics, they have access to all electronic information, could they not simply beam state secrets into rival nations eyes and thus plunge the world into war? In the books, for the main character to see the universe blink, they had to go to a mountain somewhere remote in order to view the cosmic background radiation as it blinked. But in the show, you got two people in the middle of a bright ass city (too much light pollution) and everyone sees the stars blink. In the books, the idea is that should the hard drive be cut by nanofilament wires, it would be easy to put back together and retrieve the data. They go over using explosives or sending in a squad, but rule those out because it either gets the data destroyed or deleted. Also in the books, a bunch of the nanofilament wires and sheets were made before the Sophons made it to earth so they didn't need to turn the machine back on again. Another change from the book is that children weren't on the ship. I personally think that was an unnecessary change.

They didn't create a computer the size of a planet. They unfolded a proton, which is one of the building blocks of atoms, from one-dimensional to three-dimensions which makes it bigger. Then they turned it into a computer and then returned them back to one-dimensions. Since the Sophons are the size of protons and have virtually no mass, they can accelerate them to the speed of light. And because they are the size of protons, they can go anywhere. Literally nothing we have on Earth can stop a proton since they are extremely small and they're undetectable. It's how they're fucking with particle accelerator experiments. It's also how they fuck with people's vision. Literally two sophons can fuck with a lot of things by traveling at the speed of light and can move through anything. Just so you all know, everything that’s in this show is based on pretty well established scientific concepts that exist irl. There’s a great video called ‘4th Dimension in 3 Minutes’ which helps you easily understand the idea of ‘There’s higher dimensions that humans can’t perceive, and things that can abuse that are gonna be a whole problem.’ To sum up why it’s such a problem, imagine a 2D stickman on a piece of paper. Now imagine it’s actually a sentient stickman, just as smart as us. Now imagine instead of one stickman, it’s a whole ass civilisation of sentient stickmen, living on a huge ass piece of paper. All of those stickmen are limited to existing in 2 dimensions - the X and Y axis. Us humans (who live in 3 dimensions - X, Y and Z axis) can just casually watch them go about their lives on the piece of paper, but since the stickmen are stuck in 2 dimensions, they can’t ever just ‘turn their heads’ and observe us. They can’t see in the Z axis like we can. They’re forever constrained to only perceiving things in 2 dimensions, like the paper they exist on. So not only would we be able to watch these stickmen without them seeing us, but they’d also be powerless to stop us. What if the 2D stickmen built a 2D wall? Well it’s 2D! To us 3 Dimensional beings, it’s just a flat 2D line, so we’d just be able to see right across it. That’s how the Sophon works. Not only is 99.9% of the computer stored inside higher dimensions we can’t see (making it only appear as the size of a proton in our 3 dimensions), but no walls, no barriers, literally nothing can stop them from watching our every move. We’re just as pathetic to the Sophons as the stickmen are to us. Tl:Dr: science is wack man.
