Shogun Ep 10

Masterpiece of a show

Comments

& with the end of this season when he says i’ll start in Edo w his power…BOOM EDO PERIOD STARTS

Jordan2x

Amazing show, interesting set up for a s2. That vision wasn’t real it was a potential future I think he imagined when he got knocked out. Hence the name and him clearly acknowledging the dream midway through

JotaroDrake

Wait they never recorded anything other than split right? For that movie series

JotaroDrake

Finally watched and completed this now. Thank you for the great reactions

Skelerew

Man amazing show through and through 10/10. I think it was definitely left up to interpretation if it was the future or a dream but don't forget John already has kids as well. The catfish thing with yabushige randomly made me think of jujutsu kaisen when fake geto was speaking on it he did mention people feared it and attributed it with earthquakes. I love when shows do that because of moments like this where I go oh yeah. If there is no second season I'm fine with that this was a great ending for me but I hope there will be.

Leo

W show, if they decided to make another season that would be fire but if they leave it as it is i can respect that

payasoloco

Great show! If anyone is interested in learning more about the people some of these characters are based on I highly recommend checking out the documentary series Age of Samurai: Battle For Japan on Netflix.

Brobi-Wan Kenobi

Did y'all realize that the dude that played toranaga also played scorpion in mortal Kombat

tori Wills

praise to the casting. the actor for john has this very tender and sincere deer in headlights look that he gives that immediately endears you to him. hope to see him in the future in other projects.

rickie woodson

its an intentionally ambiguous ending. its all up to your interpretation. mine is this: the flash forwards are both DREAMS of Toranaga and John of what they THINK/WANT their futures to be, not actual definitive futures.

rickie woodson

I'm a little pissy about the ending cause they cut out the actual end to the book, Toranaga just goes full sicko mode lmao

Grant Skaggs

Lmao Lupa with the Zenitsu drip. I knew he was a fan lowkey

Art of Trolling

Awesome show. Goes to show that not all endings need to be grand or have exploding things. Also, one interesting thing at the end, when Yabushige commits seppuku and looks at Toranaga and they both shared a smirk, that was his way of acknowledging that his goal had always been to become Shogun of all Japan. So in the end, Yabushige was right that Toranaga was like everyone else, just smarter about how he went about getting his way.

Squaler

I think he did lol, his hand def went to his ass when he said that

Daniel Lee

As was stated before, what an absolute masterpiece of a show. Watching along with you all has been a lot of fun. On to the next…

Parzival

1:01:45 nope wrong. Roshi was right.

Anas Ghadfi

Honestly there's plenty of movies depicting The Battle of Sekigahara lol just go watch one of those. You'll have to substitute Toranaga for Tokugawa etc. but it's doable. That's pretty much the reason they didn't show it - it's been done to death already.

Gilthwixt

This is actually how the book ends too. The Battle of Sekigahara (the one Toranaga says takes place a month away) is like Japan's version of the Revolutionary War or Gettysburg, they don't bother showing it because it's something everybody in Japan is expected to know all about. William Adams (the historical figure Blackthorne is based on) served the Shogun for over a decade after The Battle of Sekigahara. He was forbidden to leave for a very long time, but was eventually given his freedom...and decided to stay anyway. So yes, the title "Dream of A Dream" is supposed to be taken literally - he never goes home and the detail with the cross is there to show this. Other fun facts: he ended up having two half Japanese kids who inherited his lands, and his fortune was split between his Japanese family and his kids in England. We never know what ends up happening to his Japanese family though, as the Shogun's heir is the one behind "Sakoku", Japan's isolationist period. All Half-Japanese were killed or exiled (Blue Eyed Samurai is set in this period) and there's no historical record of what happened to Anjin's kids. They did have historical record of where Anjin was supposedly buried, and actually confirmed it through DNA testing a few years ago. So yeah, this show is wild af because it's crazy how much is based in actual history despite reading like fiction on paper.

Gilthwixt

You guys are too much lmao, gotta remember after an explosion like that your ear drums are blown out so Blackthorne can't even hear how he sounds to yell correctly. Y'all never watched Archer before? "MAWP!" 😂

Gilthwixt

the parts with old man blackthorne arent the future, he holds mariko's cross in those scenes but he throws it in the water at the end. I think its just a "possible future" that wont happen cause like toranaga said, he's not fated to ever leave japan.

DxShadow

Agreed 100%. They would lose their frickin' minds with all the quality writing and amazing characters in that show. Now that it's on Netflix I pray more reaction channels give it watch.

Thurman

Blackthorne no Tatakai…Wolf..Uh, complain? Want fight scene. Do you understand? Wait where’s my translator 😭😭 Oh no it hurts, Nande kotto da…

DreAKAWolves

They got my ass with another Leorio and I’m SICK 🤧

DreAKAWolves

Wait a minute I popped in to crack jokes not realizing this was the finale…Bro I feel CHEATED!!! I sat through all the scheming because I wanted to see the other side! The mutual respect built over time, the battles they fight together, and whatever Blackthorne’s healing process is. That man’s hurt and a hug ain’t gon cut it lol Bro I only got to see him clap 1 ninja with the blick, he got swords just to give them up each time smh I wanted him to FIGHT!! Tatakai gotdammit!!!

DreAKAWolves

"pull yourself together man" Lol with the slow step back, yeah they gon' GIF that

DreAKAWolves

Sheera had it right. It was a dream. He was still holding hope to go back to England. But by the end of the episode, he completely aligns with Toranaga and spends the rest of his life in Japan.

Mack

If he accepted the role of Shogun when it was originally offered, it would be an endless cycle of war with the other Lords because none of them wanted him to be in that position. But now, he has united all the realms against Ishido and will ensure that he will have everyone unified under him as Shogun. Apparently something similar happened with the historical figure that Toranaga was based on. He unified Japan when no one else could. Toranaga just put the right pieces into place and trusted that everyone would act in their nature to get his desired outcome. I think the finale was beautifully done because it stuck to the strengths of the show. Gave us what we needed instead of what we thought we wanted.

Mack

Masterful season of TV that is up there with the all the other great shows we have put in the upper echelon. I loved everything about it, even the Finale. They didn’t even have to show you a battle. It was more important to show that he won the war before it was even fought. Him standing there gazing into the beyond as the theme song and title card plays to end the series after finally seeing all that he planned fall into place. Standing ovation.

Mack

I personally think Toranaga was posturing when he said Blackthorne was just for his amusement. He says just before that he played a role in accomplishing his ultimate goal and will continue to play a role moving forward. Remember this is based on real historical figures. The real man Blackthorne is portraying, stays in Japan and has Japanese wife and kids and continues to serve the real shogun that Toranaga is based on. If anything, Toranaga helps him find his true purpose in life.

Mack

Don't be sad that it's over, be glad that it happened.

Mad4Life

Another fun fact: Mariko's real life counterpart was Hosokawa Gracia who actually never met William Adams in real life. Ironically, one of the more important aspects of her life is that she refused to commit seppuku because of her Christian beliefs (which actually does make more sense than Mariko constantly wanting to kill herself)

Ghost_Troupe

It matches real life, William Adams aka Blackthorne never went back home and was pretty much forced to stay in Japan. He was pretty much only able to send his family money and letters.

Ghost_Troupe

Don't worry, he did eventually, but working on Toranaga trading ships that he built.

GermyRTZ

I actually wanted to see the battle of Sekigahara, that shit is writted in Japan story as the largest most important battle in Japan, even Miyamoto Musashi was there (Though it's not confirmed), but hey... This is not what this story is about, we got all the inner conflict, drama, sadness and reconciliation, the rest is history we just need to read some japanese history books lol.

GermyRTZ

It was really funny... Everyone was concerned about Blackthorne till the very end, but in reality he was a bait for everyone to think he is actually important in Toranaga plans when in reality, Toranaga could do all this without him, at least theorically. But well, he took a liking to him and deemed that he would be better alongside him that sending him off, I mean, english ships are still english ships lmao. Also, we know that in real history William Adams eventually helped Toranaga with building a lot of trading relationships with the westerns

GermyRTZ

This show was really good but man was that ending deflating. Whole time I was rooting for Blackthorne only for him to lose everything and have it revealed that he’s forever just a pawn and jester for Toranaga’s amusement, and Toranaga was selfish like all the others just more tactical. The writing was masterful, but what a disappointing ending

Derpatron731

Blackthorne letting go of the Cross was also him letting go of the dream of returning home.

Brennan Ireton

nigga should've just stayed in England bro Rip Mariko

BalenSeeks

Shows the kind of mastermind Toranaga was dealing with that situation, he did always dream of being Shogun but had to keep up the play with the Late Taiko as a long con for the Heir to be on his side. Because whoever the Heir sides with is in truth Shogun because of his army and the rule of law on his side. Toranaga won the war and became Shogun all without even needing to go to war at all.

Friendly Elites

Good catch.

Tejiri Ubiedi

I believe part of the deal that Toranaga made with the Catholics is that they’ll let Blackthorne live but he will never be allowed to leave Japan for the rest of his life. That way, the Catholics can keep Japan as their own without anyone else knowing where they are and Toranaga can keep Blackthorne as his own servant that he can use how he wants. That’s why Toranaga said he’ll burn down the ship again and John’s fate is to “stay” in Japan cuz he’s never gonna let John leave the country

Henoch

"Why tell the future to a dead man"- the line yabushige dropped to his nephew at the beginning when he was originally plotting with the ship. Toronaga was listening even back then.

Tejiri Ubiedi

Absolutely. After having just recently watched it, I could not understand how it is not a more well known and famous show. It is incredibly fantastic. One of my favorite tv shows, especially since we don't get much good pirate content nowadays.

Requiem_Phantom

I would hang around for a Black Sails reaction. Criminally overlooked show

Suited For Gaming

They call him Toranaga the Trickster for a reason this nigga had contingencies like Batman

Adrian Neal

I'm so sad this show is over, it was so great.

poisonivybag

yea john was dreaming about being an old man, but when he decided to kill himself that dream died.his fate is in japan forever just like the book ending

Blue

great show. Toranaga is a true tactician. He knew he had to kill Mariko in order for crimson sky to work, getting Ochiba to switch sides at the loss of her friend. She still probably bears resentment to Toranaga but has more resentment to ishido for basically killing her even though that wasn't his intention. Then his Ruse regarding the ship and giving Blackthorn new purpose and using his as a distraction to blind his enemies. Yabushige revealed the truth though, Toranaga has always wanted to be Shogun but he acted humble while keeping his eye on the prize.

Arsean Wilbon

"I fed you shit". So did Blackthorne also gesture shit coming out his ass? That would have been funny.

The thing that flows

So, if im understanding the ending correctly, Toranaga was no different than any of them, was actually orchestrating these peoples deaths like chess and simply chose the roundabout way of becoming shogun to where no one would be able to oppose him instead of accepting the role when offered initially? Some parts of this finale felt underwhelming tbh, i didnt actually even know it was a finale until it ended, but i suppose that reveal makes up for it a little bit in the sense that I really didn't consider that possibility at all. The realization that Blackthorne, and Yabushige to an extent, were set up as characters who take control of their own fate, just to be completely mainipulated and used to set up someone elses fate and never actually realizing it is pretty crazy though. Even more crazy is that Toranaga is basically getting Blackthorne to show them how to make his style of ship while tricking him into remaining loyal to him the rest of his life.

suzukiri

That was a very detailed explanation, thanks. It does help me understand more now. I do wish they had emphasized Ochiba and Mariko's friendship more in the show. To me it had felt like their relationship was that they used to be close, they grew up together, were childhood friends, but Life took them on 2 completely separate paths and they were pretty much strangers now (Like when Ochiba said she had heard stories of how Mariko is now, she didn't believe them, because Mariko used to be so different when she was younger, etc.).

Drake Rage

The scenes with old Blackthorne and his "grandchildren" aren't real, they are a dream. The show actually gives us several clues throughout the episode. That's why those sequences only appear in the beginning when he was drifting in and out of consciousness and stopped after the scene where he said "fuck it" and decided to commit sepukku thus choosing to abandon that potential future he envisioned. That's also why we see him drop Mariko's cross into the lake despite holding it in the "future". That's why his "grandchildren" thought "savages" gave him the katana even though he wouldn't use that term anymore if he had returned home. That's also why the episode is called "dream within a dream". It's literally all there. Plus, Blackthorne's character is based on William Adams, who in real life actually stranded in Japan, became the first "western" samurai and ended up living in Japan until he died.

Blue Pearl

The flash forward isn't real. It's literally a dream/potential future Blackthorne envisioned up until the moment he said "fuck it" and decided to commit sepukku, thus letting go of the dream to go back to England. That's also why the dream sequences stop appearing after that very moment.

Blue Pearl

mina kimes

Nary Compper

So in the beginning when they showed old Blackthorn was he still in Japan or did he make it back home? Also the kids say the sword was chipped when did that happen the show is great but I feel they left to much out and let to much open to interpretation.

Senjioh

someone on twitter described this show as "Game Of Thrones if Ned Stark was smart" and they was not lying

dom

That's a dream at the beginning lmao. He threw away Marikos cross because he decided to stay in Japan forever. The dream is a possible future if he kept the cross and decided to leave japan

Ashe

Also the dream of the future is one he made up and envisioned had he been allowed to leave back home. Hes still clutching Mariko's cross when he is old but in actuality he throws it away into the water. He realizes that the future he envisioned is one of sadness and regret and decides he will carve a new future in Japan instead, dispelling that future dream of his.

billmunny

I see what you’re saying, but I think the point of her character is that she tricked herself into thinking toranga was her enemy when in reality he never was. She passed the blame from marikos father to toranga. I think because 1). It was mariko’s father (her bestfriend and someone mariko loved) how could she harbor such hatred for someone that her bestfriend loves and mourns, that’s a contradiction waiting to happen. So she blames toranga and believes he’s the true enemy (when we have no proof to back her claims) 2). Mariko was only spared bc she was married to buntaro, her name still offends many people, she can’t play both sides, she can’t agree with the decision to kill marikos whole family and yet claim to be marikos bestfriend.. so once again she blameshifts to toranga as a justification of her beliefs and actions. Her characters entire belief system is based on her relationship with Mariko and her trying to reconcile the opposing pain that her and mariko have been through in a way that still allows for them to be bestfriends. As it progresses we see the cracks start to form, when ishido proposes, then the way he talks to mariko when she arrives at Osaka, her poem, the way she’s watching as mariko tries to leave and fights, her declaration that she will commit seppuku.. all of this is just slowly showing Ochiba that the one causing this pain for her, at least in the moment, is ishido. Then theres the conversation in the garden, we see ochiba desperately trying to hold onto this friendship and also maintain the lie she’s been feeding herself. And then the failed kidnapping is the last straw for her. Her reason for hating toranga (the contradiction in her friendship with mariko) is now gone because mariko is gone and there is no friendship to protect anymore, and she snaps back to reality, that ishido is a horrible person to keep in charge and never had plans of giving the realm to the heir. That’s just how I took it tho.

Jordan

Its cool to see that a lot of the main characters were based on real life people and events, with john blackthorne being the western samurai william adams and torenaga based upon shogun tokugawa. Beautiful show with cinematography, soundtracks and authentic depiction of japan's culture and its differences with the western world.

billmunny

This shit was a mf movie 🔥🔥🔥🧎🏾‍♂️‍➡️🙇🏾‍♂️

Xavier Chandler

I thing it goes back to toranaga refrencing blackthorns "unless i win" I think toranagas unless i win gamble was getting Ochiba to side with him over her own revenge

YourStoneAngel

I think what it is is that when Ochiba arrived she was bent on getting revenge for a past transgression, but now after truly witnessing the diabolical character of Ishido, she has decided to pull support from him. Remember that she is not actually supporting Toranaga, she just isn't supporting Ishido anymore. In regards to Mariko's kidnapping, I think it was incredibly necessary for Ishido to not let Mariko leave. You cannot set the precedent of someone actually getting to leave, permit or not. Also, the danger of the shinobi would then just become another pretext to fortify the castle with even more guards and maybe even put the other permits on "hold".

Anatoly

Yeah, my main problem with Mariko's abduction/death was how it was used to make Ochiba switch sides.. That is the biggest impact that Mariko's death had, to make Ochiba switch sides/form a truce with Toranaga, which means Ochiba handed Toranaga the "win"... which makes zero sense to me with how they have presented Ochiba, her actions, the way she manipulated/steered Ishido to make him more ruthless, her hate for Toranaga, her need for revenge.. etc.

Drake Rage

Sheera please with the talking all through the final shot of the show 😩 Great show though, extremely faithful to the book and incredible acting throughout 10/10

GrampsGohan

Toranaga will never been the grimey man of the year allegations after saying "i was never gonna let him leave, he was a clown to parade around to throw the rest of you off"

Tremaine

About Ochiba, I don't know, you might be right but I will think more about it.

GermyRTZ

I don't think in a situation like that you could just say "Ah, she can go, she will come back soon anyways..." Like, the other people there will be like "Bitch what? I need to do something too can I go and come back tomorrow too?"

GermyRTZ

If this were nonfiction I'd agree. This is based off real history. Events don't become absolutely climactic every second of the day. Appreciate that you were granted the opportunity to see this masterpiece of a show that was more authentic than 95% of historical film pieces in our time.

TheDroppedFry

Y'all need to watch Black Sails, especially because it's ok Netflix now. Another equally GOATed show.

Carlos

I don’t think John ever made it back to England bc Toranaga wouldn’t have let him go lol. I think that scene at the start was just meant to be a dream of a life that he could have had if he went back to England.

PetersThimble

Yeah like this shit done done. It's implied that toranaga just keeps the nigga prisoner forever, im dead. Great show though, Imma have to read the book.

Michael Blake

Damn Fuji been thru it. Within a few months she lost: Her son, Her Husband, Her aunt, Her Grandfather, I would want to be a nun after that too lol.

Freeofgreed

What a ride it’s been, every aspect about this show was great sad to see this show go after one season

Boogie's Games

wait that the end of the book and for the show? too

mercury_black17

Black flag would be fire such a good underrated show

Obsidian Fallen

John said "pissing in the wind" when they towing that's same line Yabu said at the same place😂

dobley

Its okay roshi, i also laughed at that scream lmao

Freeofgreed

Definitely a lot of amazing characters in this, Mariko, Yabushige, Buntaro, etc. BUT there is a pretty big hole with this ending, like Ochiba's character literally makes zero sense with what she did. The first time we saw Ochiba was, I believe, when she returned to Osaka. The first thing she did was meet Ishido and mock him for getting caught up in Toranaga's tricks. She told Ishido that the reason the Taisho had even chosen him as a Regent was only because he was diligent/worked-hard and that he was not talented or smart.. then she intimidated/charmed him to be more ruthless if he wanted to win against Toranaga.. which led to the other Regents having their families taken hostage... Ochiba kept telling Ishido not to let up until Toranaga is dead, and that Toranaga always has tricks up his sleeve, and to not fall for them. Like... they made it seem like Ochiba only cared about Toranaga's death, cause the old lady (Taisho's wife) even warned Ochiba that she is supporting the wrong side, and that Toranaga is the only one who can/will keep her child safe, but Ochiba still kept taking Ishido's side and kept advising him against Toranaga.. so she clearly valued her revenge more than her own child's safety/future... Regarding Mariko's abduction/death.. like Ishido said to Mariko when he gave her the permit to leave Osaka, Ishido said something like: "it is stupid to leave now to go meet Toranaga just to immediately come back to Osaka anyway"... like that is exactly the reason why they could have LET her leave in peace... but Ochiba's advice was "if we let her leave everyone else will want to leave too".... They coulda told the others that she was going to come back right away (since Toranaga was summoned to Osaka).. so the others couldn't leave. So basically there was no reason to even try to abduct Mariko, they coulda let her leave since she was going to return anyway with Toranaga. Them trying to abduct Mariko, which resulted in her death, was not needed, and it was a foolish/plot-convenience decision which made Toranaga's plan succeed... and to top it off Ochiba suddenly switches sides after Mariko dies.. like she literally valued Toranaga's defeat/death more than the safety of her own child, but now that Mariko died, Ochiba wants to backstab Ishido...? Who she was basically controlling the entire time?.. Anyway great show overall, but Ochiba's character/storyline makes literally zero sense, lol.

Drake Rage

Yyyeeessss

Rai

I think the clear point where it deviates from that possible future of him back in England is when he's on his knees before Toranaga and looks to the side, imagining that future of him old in bed, but he looks away and tries to kill himself, thus proving himself to have settled in this culture and to Toranaga instead. And giving away Mariko's rosary near the end is just further proof of that. This series was amazing and I'm glad they're sticking to just this season because the ending was perfect as is imo.

qitty

Fun Historical Context: Toranaga is based on Tokugawa Ieyasu. The Battle of Sekigahara was in 1600. After he won, he gained supremacy in Japan, and in 1603 the Emperor gave him the title of Shogun. He died in 1616. And John? He's based on William Adams. He lived the rest of his life in Japan, spending 20 years there. He created Western Ships for the Shogun, facilitated Japan's approval for trading factors with Netherlands and England, and then captained 4 Expeditions to Southeast Asia. He died at 55 in 1620.

godUsoland

What did you expect, Helm's Deep in Japan with 45+ minutes of two armies fighting? A crazy coup scene where it turns out Toranaga had assassins hidden in the castle and he kills the entire council in one night and assumes control with Ochiba at his side? The ending fits the show perfectly. Toranaga has outsmarted everyone, including the viewer. I don't even know how this show could've been better, it was honestly phenomenal writing and acting nonstop.

John Cedar

Yabushige talking shit about Mariko's poetry and then his death poem is just "i hope a dog eats me"

rajave

Yabushige talking to Toranaga like how one piece fans ask Oda about the one piece. Jokes aside, I love how he pressed Toranaga about not being the good guy. Toranga basically like him, but way more intelligent...I think Roshi is right that wasn't a flash-forward it was a dream sequence.

illnamethechannellater653

Poor John, he will never get back to his kids. That dream of returning back to England was just that, a Dream.

godUsoland

I interpret Anjin being old as either a dream or a possible future where he was allowed to go back to England or escaped there and never got over Mariko. By letting go of her cross he may have a better future in Japan. Just my interpretation! I like this show because they give you room to theorize and try to break everything down, amazing show!

Brandon Bossler

So just to clarify, old man John is a dream, he put Mariko's cross in the water with Fuji. He had that dream/flashforward when he was about to commit seppuku, basically him seeing what could have been but throwing it away to die for the village. It's a little confusing but very well done.

HometownHero

Who the fuck is paul? All I see Lupa.

Jamaal Ellison

Yo, ya'll should check out Black Sails next or when you all get a chance for it. Imagine it this or Game of Thrones, but pirates. It's that good.
