Lady Ochiba and Lady Mariko are my favorite characters because of their complexity but yabushige is a close second like roshi said he just trying to make it through. Mariko and John definitely give me the star crossed lovers feel like if they met in a different time like the present they would still fall for each other that just goes to show how amazing the actors are and writers as well this is the type of romance I can get behind just wish they actually had a happy ending together.

A lot of the historical facts are a bit different. For example, Mariko/Gracia's father was Hideyoshi, he didn't actually kill Nobunaga (Ochiba's father). In reality, once Nobunaga found out that Hideyoshi wanted to kill him, he killed himself.

Also this was rather tame way to take her out pretty sure in real life this character was brutally murdered and burned to death. Ishido was just trying to capture her in the novels killing her was an accident a very bad mistake to make because Mariko or Gracia (real life) was very beloved by all the other Japanese nobles.

Great shows have a way of saying a lot with actions and not words. Blackthorne offering to second Mariko is an ultimate sign of his love for her. He doesn’t believe in Sepukku. Doesn’t even believe in Christianity and def doesn’t want to see her die. But he ultimately offers to 2nd her because she wants to fulfill her duty and he wants to be there for her anyway he can. When they saw each other after, no words needed to be spoken because she knows now for sure how much he loves her.

Not 100% sure about Japan specifically, but in many cultures, once you get married the woman is immediately subordinated to the man, so how they would interact would most likely change. I'm sure she would still have some influence, but it would be in a "wife of Ishido" way rather than as an individual.

He's fun to root for as a villain, like some of the characters in Game of Thrones when it was good. This show reminds me of that series sometimes with how characters are written, very few of the main characters are good people, they are all shades of grey. I think it's harder to dislike Yabushige when they disarmed you with such a horrific thing right off the bat of him boiling a dude and then show him being likeable but treacherous. It's kinda cool how he just does what he thinks is best for him and doesn't care.

And only Yabushige said the explosion would kill them all, but he’s Yabushige lol. There was a chance they would be captured and Mariko couldn’t risk that

The "good" outcome of this plan was for Mariko to be either kidnapped and imprisoned with everyone else or made to disappear so that people could infer that "bandits" killed them on the road, as is the excuse they often use. Ishido can't let anyone leave in order to secure his power, but he needs to appear to let her leave. Everyone knows they are hostages, but it cannot be outright acknowledged unless something drastic like Mariko being killed in a public way happens. Neither impending outcome was good for Ishido/Ochiba, so they attempted to solve it through nameless Shinobi and kidnapping. Actually letting Mariko leave would signal everyone else to leave, and actually letting her die wasn't an option for obvious reasons. This plan could have worked had Mariko been sleeping alone, but it seems like it would've just bought them a little time.

The one thing I really wanted from this show was for Mariko to finally see something to live for and choose not to die, but it wasn't meant to be, her character is just pure tragedy. At least she got to die for a real purpose like Hiromatsu, but still, that was hard to watch. I really loved her character, I hope she gets an Emmy.

Ishido had no play here anyways, right? He got mad at Kiyama way back doing his attack trying to capture Blackthorne and how it made him look bad (cause the city was under his watch) and here you have family members of the Council/nobles getting killed within city walls. I know he wanted Mariko out of play, but there was no win for him in any of this as they pointed out, he just seemed to say "Fuck It" and make it worse. Now she's dead and still achieves one of the goals she had but with the added bonus of other people now dead. And Yabushige said last episode or the one before that every time he escapes death, he ends right back up in the situation. Funny to see that play out instantly again *WHILE* the plan is still going on to escape his previous one.
