nah I'm with Lupa - Buntaro is definitely still alive! I don't think he's a traitor though, but why WOULDN'T they show him die on-screen, instead having him 'disappear' as he fends off the others? Plus the only kind thing Mariko said about him is that he's a skilled warrior, so I think he's *believed* dead but will pop back up after she and John get together (if they do - for DRAMA)
