Mr. & Mrs. Smith Ep 7

they made some choices writing John's character lol

Comments

Someone in here said it…two things can be true at once. They are both at fault. John milked the mission and he should have communicated the details to Jane. Also John came to thag apartment unarmed so it’s most likely he had no intention of killing her that day. Jane got involved and even tho she didn’t know the details. The minute she knew her cover was blown she should have gotten rid of Bev. Then she shot and missed. From the moment she entered that house she was liable. Will definitely say it’s very crazy for John to just think he can just leave like that. Especially without even talking it over with Jane. It’s like the house all over again, big decisions without discussing it. Overall love the discourse you guys have been having and fire reaction!

Kevin

Nah THEY can’t get new partners, she can

JotaroDrake

It was completely John’s fault alone until Jane came in and made it her fault as well

JotaroDrake

Ending Discussion: I appreciate Roshi tryna be fair to both John and Jane.. cause the writing clearly going above and beyond to make him look like an incompetent dumbass. To me he is STILL way more likeable than Jane. and yes.. I still don't get wtf this show is about cause the spy shit is so amateurish, and both John and Jane are so bad at their jobs that the show had to provide plot armor or time-skip to say they completed the missions. If this show is supposed to be more about relationships.. then even that sucks ass cause why do we want to see 2 incompatible, really fkn weird/unhinged(more so Jane) people doing clown shit.. I just don't care, lmao.

Drake Rage

Perfect depiction of Iphone users who can't ever have a full or decent battery life. lol Samsung GANG!!!!!!!!

Ethan Vinson

Hihi was definitely setting them up. The company was sowing conflict between them since episode 3 or 4. I think thats how the company does business. They want them to eventually turn on each other.

Mack

I believe it is in relation to the episode of therapy when the therapist suggested doing separate tasks, we are shown that they followed her advice. But ultimately it doesn't work even with separate missions.

n momo

You are very incorrect. I clearly put more blame on Louie than Jermone. And on Cissy than Franklin. Y’all just be making up your own narrative based on what you perceive which I am not biased toward anybody in any show because of gender. I criticized Sally at one point more than Barry. I’m very non-gender biased.

itzsheera

The company BEEN tryna get John outtaderrr, this shit was definitely a setup, clearly. This was John's mission, they'd been taking missions separately (hence John asking about whether she's slept with men on missions), so he did it the way he felt would be best and by all appearances nothing had gone wrong yet, but Hihi saw an opportunity for some oppery and took it. Not saying John isn't overdue for a career change but yes, it's definitely both of their fault, and it definitely was a setup

A. P.

So Jane is stronger than John at the tactical cut and dry things. John is stronger at thinking on his feet and has better social awareness. Which is exactly what Jane doesn't have. They Ying yang each other. The writing and the characters say they're incompatible. Jane said she wants to advance. John wants to chill. The company plays into it. I don't think there's any real comparison in strength to look into than that. Odd people make it a woman vs man thing imo

Anna Anthony

Lmao Yes! He got golden energy because Jane got hamster energy(shes not very cuddly by nature). And sometimes you gain more by giving more. We've never seen John finish cooking is all

Anna Anthony

I oddly think that's the point and where we can side with John in that, Jane is frustrating to have as a partner. Cause siding with the winning team(Jane) is obvious. I'm still rooting for John lol

Anna Anthony

I agree that what you say is an issue, but in John's case I think exploration is a large part of his personality. The fact that he's very into mindfulness (yoga/meditation/the toy) tells me that he takes pride (albeit too much in John's case) in figuring out vs just being told how to please loved ones.

Anna Anthony

Also your korra and arcane point is pointless since there was no man to take any of the blame in either of those situations it was very much clear who was to blame.

William Tippen

The fact that roshi was putting the blame on them both but they somehow still kept circling back to it being John’s fault proves my point.

William Tippen

Exceptions are not the rule… if the opposite happens more then who are you to say that I’m wrong?

William Tippen

Well that's a wrong statement. Obviously you have forgotten lupa during the korra and arcane reactions lol. Plus sheera is critcal to men and women

Metweet .c

It’s so funny how this is a genuine opinion from some of y’all. You see a dumb man in a show and now their is a planned effort towards it? Be for real

Michael Blake

Aight slow down on the redpills

Dyastro

True. You have a lot of valid points especially their poor communication skills. To the point of "what did you do to antagonize me" to quote paula cole "its me who is my enemy, me who make the monsters" the only person that we are responsible for and can control are ourselves including our emotions and how we respond to outside stimuli. I had an intruder in my home a few months ago. He wanted to argue, i kept my mouth shut. He wanted to put on a show, i averted my eyes. I chose pacifism and compassion instead of violence. I could have called the cops earlier or went to one of my many neighbors who are ex military but in his delusion of thinking my home and body were his he couldn't see the grace which I extended to him by not involving others who would not be as peaceful as I. I get to live with my good karma and the peace it brings. All he has is himself 💅 . So yes a person can do insulting things but you dont have to be insulted. I learned that from dr. Jackie and Buddhism. And Michelle obama: when they go low we go high. But i also understand that emotions can get the best of us sometimes (like it did jane this ep)

rickie woodson

im also 1000% sure that "The Company/HIhi" is a lot smarter than we realized. setting up a extrovert with a introvert is on purpose. Pairing someone who loves their mother with someone who has no relationship to their parents and lastly sending John out on a mission with a "rival company" that so happens to also be a female black spy that he relates to and then sending Jane over there knowing shed be emotional. This pairing is incompatible on purpose, that purpose idk

Derek Sanders

Hihi was doing that on purpose I believe to create conflict. They have pushing Jane to replace John or giving hints they want him replaced.

BlueSmurf

They both a mess and don't need to be spies.

BlueSmurf

its crazy because john emotional attachment to his widowed mother was a giant red flag and was gonna cost them the whole thing (even though hihi knows and does not care). While Janes emotional attachment failed the mission and also almost got john killed. All she had to do was kill her but she wanted information the target had to say "were not bonding you have a gun to me". The fact that John didn't know jane slept with 2 people on mission proves they don't have to share everything with each other for missions. If roles were switched we would be blaming john for letting his jealousy cause them to fail

Derek Sanders

Yea that what it seems. They are trying to push Jane to replace John.

BlueSmurf

I think people who are solely on one side might be missing the point of the entire set up of the show. If you go back to pilot episode, They both like Pasta and Korean BBQ. That's probs why they were paired together. Other than that, they are strangers paid to get intimate things accomplished together. They fail, they die. Its a partnership. And they are Both failing in diff ways.

Anna Anthony

I’m just at a loss of words at this episode like what the hell 😂😂 they both moving wild

Bobby Robinson

I’m gonna have to blame John on this one….dude you took a MONTH…He could have shot her when he was massaging her back….but instead put a tracker on her….sorry but the logic has left the chat…

Akila Yaw

Disagree, the character Gina was great of what she was introduced to be, the antagonist. Played her part correctly. Either way my point still stands, when it comes to these types of shows, (relationship/ "girl vs boy" type of shows) they always make the male a dunce. I'm pretty sure Sheeras comment had to to with anime, which is a whole different conversation. But regardless, her comment doesn't change my mind.

EmoBurrito

Also even sheera has pointed this out on shows that they've enjoyed.

Metweet .c

I would argue that they're good examples of it even with well written shows. I would say that Polly was the one female character that they spent more time developing why she does what she does. You've listed Gina that really didn't add anything to the show from the moment she was introduced. Every other female character I can argue was very annoying most of the time in the show because of the random anger they had to the main characters that was justified but happens at awkward moments.

Metweet .c

its not a plot hole HiHi set them up

nathaniel dixon

JANE said he could have done it in 3 days it was not her mission... he was given much longer to do the mission so he wanted to use that time to get as much information on Hihi as he could THEY ARE SPIES even if they are shitty lol. jane came and ruined his mission it was actually her fault because she showed up and literally had no plan

nathaniel dixon

I think those two are horrible examples. Peaky blinders has some amazing female characters like Polly and Gina, etc. And Barry just has a whole shitshow of wild characters.

EmoBurrito

but i'm a bit confused as to why HiHi would give them seperate missions to begin with. Like why not give it to the both of them like in the beginning since they are supposed to be a team and leave them to figure out whether they wanna do this mission solo or not.

Saraël Lele

I get what you mean with the 'independent woman trope' but let's not act like these other shows are good at writing women. You're gonna get writing like this to balance out emotionally hysterical female characters that just do random annoying crap that is not given any background. Look at Sally in Barry with how long it took for them to even get see more of Sally's background. Or lizzy from peaky blinders who would once second be understanding and caring and five minutes later talking crazy

Metweet .c

but did he get any info tho? i get where u coming from but at the end of the day he got nothing done. then jane came and made this bad situation even worse and more frustrating. they both fucked up this mission so badly

Saraël Lele

I love watching reactions to this show I didn't think people about their relationship. They're a mess yes, but I didn't think people would side with John or Jane. Sad tomorrow the last ep

Kevs rey

Yall shoudl try out ' The greatest beer run ever' movie already feels like a family night classic

Killertorts

this is well said but my thinking is like, if you antagonize me to hit you, then did i start it still? Well, what did I do to make you antagonize me? You can keep going back constantly to make an argument for who "started" it. While the further back you go the argument gets weaker and weaker, but its still there. Their weak communication and lack of being able to be emotionally connected as Mr/Mrs Smith started it so they should both be taking accountability for that. Half the point of this entire show has been gearing towards the fact that they both have flaws that hurt their collective effort as spies since they're on both ends of two extremes. But they have the potential to balance each other

nami

I feel you the writing in this show is hella iffy 😂😂😂

Fizzy

Sheera and Lupa will literally side with any women no matter what she does she could literally do the same things they kill a man for and won’t say a word. They killed John every episode for anything he does yet want to give grace to Jane this episode for displaying exactly what they’d kill John for…

William Tippen

Absolute fact! They are purposefully making him look like a complete clown while making her look like she can do no wrong.

William Tippen

No your right lol it been very apparent

Fizzy

Exactly

LiquidXGravity

Woah I didn't mean to offend anyone it's just how they are doing things now

LiquidXGravity

A lot of men are dumb the same way a lot of women are dumb. This fiction. settle down

Spring time

Honestly, I’ve noticed lately these types of shows always make the female lead strong and independent and always make the male lead a complete idiot. I’m guessing it’s because back in the day they used to make the female leads dumb and the male one’s smart. But shows like this would greatly benefit if both characters were nuanced, it would make discussions much better. Also on a side note, who cares if she felt uncomfortable and got in her feelings? Like you’ve literally fucked 2 other people before lol. Assuming that wasn’t a lie.

EmoBurrito

On my own i couldnt get pass ep 3. Imma binge it with yall commentary lol

Yahroh

Is the writers alot of writers lately try to make the woman a strong lead and they make the man dumb

LiquidXGravity

Another example of why this show was complete bs… they made this man look like a complete dunce while making seem like she can do no wrong. They never give this man a chance to cook so we will never know if any of his methods would work because she feels the need to intervene everytime. Let’s also note that until they sent Jane that message in this episode none of the missions as far as we know had a time limit so John should be able to handle his however he wants.

William Tippen

am i the only one agreeing with john and the mission, he literally said that it took him a month because she was a spy of a rival company, he was telling her all the stuff about his company and Jane and probably acted like he wanted to switch companies so he could get info on the other company to give to hihi. They clearly trusted each other cus he knew she was with a different company. He wwasn't in it for the sex he just wanted to get info on the other company which is why it was taking ages

Callum

Hihi wants them to fail, if hihi wanted to be a good boss it’d help the agents do better instead of setting them on missions not suited for either of them.

DJ Muldrow

Plus a secret spy agency letting him contact his mum all this time I get they said no contact but they have to know he talks to his mum that much but haven’t once called him out on it or just killed his mum to avoid any problems they’ve shown it without saying it they’re pretty much being watched I would say but still let that slide

Jay Nz

I think you guys are missing some of the context clues and discounting lupas point about the company trying to Manipulate them both. At least that what I got from it think back to when they did stuff like congratulate Jane only and sending her a gift after the Italy stuff just before asking if she need a new John while she was with John and they would that since they always know what there doing yh you could put that down as John messing up but at that point they only actually had 1fail they’ve been pushing Jane to try and replace him. Plus why send John there without Jane knowing his was coming if not to stir up a fight Jane was sent to so called fix the case but why also tell John separately she’s there if she supposedly the good spy and finish it alone or just left both know and tell them he’s taking to long so fix it together rather than send both separately knowing fully well they’ve been fighting

Jay Nz

John really needs to get over the sex thing. Sounds like he's just not good and guessing and finding out how Jane likes to be pleasured whilst having sex. He's so childish that he's dosent like her telling him what she likes. You're grown adults who has time to be guessing every time you do it

Metweet .c

Bro it’s both their faults but you know what I am niether if their sides I am on HiHis side they’re bad employees just fire them figuratively or literally

AresReborn

Nah I’m riding with John idgaf 😑 people like Jane are a fucking impossible to be with

Jr. Martinez

Still kinda seemed like hihi was setting up a conflict between John and Jane. Maybe hoping Jane would take John out or something. I dunno. It's mad fishy.

Mr. Glasses

Also why would John take a month to kill someone. What if the job it time sensitive.

Samke Dladla

No. She knew it was a mission. Hence, "I thought they wanted me to intervene"

Samke Dladla

she's from chewing gum not bubblegum LMAOOO

Des Bethea

Banshee

Danger Tomato

Bro fuck the banter and what led to the shit. At the end of the day I saw 2 so-called assassins/spies engaging with the same target and fumbled that mission. Jane can be confused all she wants but she did fire her weapon and she missed.

Wrëck

John and Jane are literally rejects (army, CIA). I'm honestly not sure how the company can expect them to become good spies.

The thing that flows

@Nachelie Never said that John doesn't make mistakes and he hasn't made any here. I simply said they're both flawed. After being notified about the target why didn't Jane just kill her? Why drag it out? And Jane getting the job done is debatable. Both are flawed, I like both, one can upset me for an episode while vice versa.

Aniki Pft

Did yall see the end of the episode?? Like the little mid credits scene? It’s important

JavonR92

Hihi knows exactly what they're doing so using them as a way to shit on John isn't it. Hihi is literally stirring conflict between the two on purpose, especially with how weird Hihi operated today.

Aniki Pft

i like how yall say john should be a spy you know the job were you play the long game and deceive your target, now if you say he should of told jane that he was taking a mission, sure ill give you that. but she showed up with a gun to what she thought was a random person to get info on the low, she blow the cover and dont put all the blame on John, yeah he was talking to someone but jane said she fucked people so lets say its a stalemate. but yes john is a dumbass i agree

Antonio

John told have easily told Jane this mission if he was getting rushed to finish it which would have saved so much time. Yes they both have flaws but Roshi is right that John is written to make the most mistakes. Reasons why Jane is favored and gets the job done.

Nachelie

John’s mom is Donald Glover’s mother in real life. Fyi!!

JavonR92

I mean we can admit the issues of both characters, it shouldn't just be one when the show clearly makes note of this. John makes dumb humane decision, Jane doesn't have any clue a fuck of how to communicate for shit.

Aniki Pft

My interpretation of this episode was entirely different. It seemed to me Hihi was trying to set them up to fail. Telling her to go over there and not telling her why (she thought he was cheating with someone), then telling John she was there afterward so he'd go too also unaware of why Jane went, sounds like textbook sabotage. Hihi has also been pushing Jane to leave him and get a new partner.

Robert Golden

Great ending discussion, nice to hear yall thoughts on these characters

Edogawa

I think it isn’t either of their fault frfr, I think HiHi is just running a social experiment and every person they’ve interacted with are also employed by HiHi

Ricky Pereira

The next episode is going to be intense. I agree John is mostly at fault for taking too long and saying too much info. Funny how people were calling out Jane's issues but now John makes things worse.

Nachelie

Earn's a good guy fr but he's a shit spy lmao

Delinda Arts

to lupa and sheera's point, it was JOHN's mission so yes at the end of the day it was all his fault cause she wouldnt have to come in and clean up after him if he would have done the job in the first place. now once she was ON the mission, she isnt without any blame. two things can be true at once: both are fallable human beings that played a part in this messy situation, but he STARTED it. its like a fight. you hit me and i hit you back now we in a brawl. thats assault charges on BOTH of us, but YOU started it. accountability not blame, thats all we are saying roshi

rickie woodson

cause they are also a couple not JUST spies. emotions are irrational so you do irrational things when you feel them. she got there and saw this beautiful woman, she felt jealous and insecure, add in its been a month, bada bing bada boom "sit sis. lets talk about what you been doing with my husband". because of how fast the dialogue flows you can miss some things. its comedy so yes they act a little goofy or dumb for comedic effect BUT there is also reasoning there. john was taking so long cause "i found out she works for a rival company so i was getting her to trust me to get all the information she has on the company cause we dont know ANYTHING about who we are working for". so yes, if they were both robots who were find with being blind killing machines we could say "they are both dumb, nothing more to it" but they are far more complex then that. not defending them just giving a different perspective. i think they dumb for even joining up for this. at least with a government agency you get health benefits. i dont have enough of the adventurer in me to ever consider doing something this so from jump i was prepared for any tomfoolery they throw my way

rickie woodson

it wasnt the computer's fault jane.........

rickie woodson

Idk why there's such an emphasis on blaming one or the other when you can go back far enough and make a case to blame either for every problem they've encountered so far. This again just shows how they are just opposites of each other in the worst and best way imo. Sheera's ending point on it ironically shows exactly that. The one time Jane was human she made a mistake. Because she went from one extreme to another. They have the qualities to balance each other out but they hardly work together or verbalize their needs enough to capitalize on it and then things like this happen. Because I don't realistically think if John was exactly like Jane that it would work out either. It might work much better in the beginning but at somepoint the home and interpersonal part of being Mr/Mrs Smith would become an issue. Ultimately their communication sucks but John makes some very questionable decisions, which while consistent with his character, its very irritating to see at times. John hard clings onto his humanity while Jane is a bit detached from it, which again bodes better for the job. At this point Jane is prob gonna have to kill him if she wants to replace him or hihi might have them both killed. Also, not defending it, but that mission took so long because John milked it. He enjoyed the time he spent with that girl because being with Jane began to take a toll on him because of her lack of being able to understand others emotions and that mission became like an escape imo. He's still braindead, but you could technically point at that and then blame Jane for that missions failure. But that would not be very smart, blaming any one of them individually for a job that's a colllective effort inherently is not very smart imo.

nami

appreciate ya'll leaving in the discourse at the end

Andrew J Raymund

That show bubble gum was hilariously uncomfortable

Kwame Hasani Salmon

The mission took more than 3 days because being around jane became a drain to johns mental health

Fred_D3

I’d dump my girl too if I found out she was takin soup from the riddler

Fred_D3

Listen they both dumb end of story. WTF! 😂 But the show is consistent with the movie.

Frederick

As much as yall dislike John lol he's still my favorite 😂

Jadon

This was a dope episode I just wish they didn't make John so incompetent. That shit so aggravating to watch.

FlyGod

Ol girl is from Wakanda Forever (the goofy bald headed one that wanted different weapons). Don't know about Bubblegum 🤷🏿‍♂️

HIM

Ya'll was hella into this episode, that was a serious debate at the end! Fun fact, that was Donald Glover's actual mother playing John's mum

OloPrime

As I've been saying John is a man-child that rides the improv line well enough to not seem incompetent. THERE IS A REASON THE COMPANY ASKED JANE IF SHE WANTED TO MOVE ON.

Franklin wasn't getting away with 35mil scott free

Didn't the therapist tell them they should try working on separate projects? So I figured that's just what they were doing now. She's been doing solo stuff and he has as well.

Mike Besaw

and i agree with roshi’s comment at the end! i think it’s a bit unfair that the show never shows the audience whether john’s method gets the job done or not bc the only scenes we’ve seen are the ones where he’s doing things his way but jane gets impatient and jumps in :/ but yeah on a lighter note, it was fun seeing roshi in the middle being yelled at by sheera and lupa lol

cami ً

That’s honestly the issue I have with current Hollywood writing. They make the men out to be Homer Simpson levels of incompetence and it ruins the storytelling.

Paul Reyes

personally I think this episode shows you that john and jane mirror each other but in the way that they are opposites/have what the other lacks, e.g. jane is an insufferable person but great and efficient at her job while john is a nice person with a good personality but awful at his job

cami ً

Jane is perfect for being a spy, her personality, hesitance towards emotion fits well and intelligence, she's like a cat. John is quick on his feet, a little too loving, and quick to emotion, its why he's not good at his job, he's like a golden retriever whose barely been trained.

Coco

I think hihi assumed that john told Jane the details of the mission after-all they’re meant to be partners . Whether or not they go on separate missions. Shouldn’t matter since they’re a team. I think Hihi doesn’t account for the fact that John and Janes relationship is in shambles they think purely logically so they assume the communication between the two would be okay. Hence the vague message “He taking too long head to the address” John purposely didn’t tell Jane anything about the mission because he feels like she’s controlling and wants to prove he can do shit on his own.

Maxy7maxy

Yeah I dont understand that writing choice on Johns Character. Thats a bit mad

KS Neelesh

The only thing that irks me is that Brad’s John was gun ho, slightly clumsy, and a bit goofy. But he felt dangerous as shit and he was extremely competent. Angelina’s Jane was the assassin but he was the soldier. Wit this one it’s like they dialed the goofy to a level of incompetence. Where it seems like he can’t function without her and I don’t like that.

von

can you guys watch not ok, on hulu

Lily Rose

But John’s shit >>>>> Jane’s shit imo.

LisMM

They literally just admitted to Jane's fault multiple times

Metweet .c

Jane was so right im with Sheera on that take

Rurazz

Atleast Brad pitts John was smart and efficient like angelina's Jane but still goofy. This john is just aggravating. His face and voice actually aggravates when he tries to joke around in tense moments lol

Metweet .c

Shira was spitting
