Pinocchio is a Story About Art and God

The first video of 2024, and boy is it a whopper. This could basically be called "Fear of Puppets" given how much research went into it, so please enjoy!

Pinocchio is a Story About Art and God

Hi Jacob - fantastic video! As an upcoming video essayist, I was wondering if it was ever in the cards to make another behind-the-scenes "process" video like the one you did for the beheading video? I found it super helpful to understand your process!

Lou Wilson's portrayal of Pinocchio in Dimension 20's Neverafter was probably my favorite Pinocchio. He draws more from the original Pinocchio story than the subsequent retellings--the crueler version of the tale. Lou's Pinocchio is hilarious, yes, but also grapples with the question of why he's been brought into existence in such a cruel world, and the temptations of just losing yourself to hedonism. The blue fairy (spoiler) isn't portrayed as a force of good, but rather a force of destiny--the god-like authors of the fairy tales imposing their will on the characters. Don't wanna spoil even more, but it's a great addition to the Pinocchio-verse!

If you haven't read Antkind, it's got some great perspectives on puppeteering.

Have to say this is probably one of your best scripts. I don't really care about Pinocchio and didn't really like the Del Torro version that much, but this was still a great watch. The script wouldn't feel out of place amongst the essays in this month's LRB.

Loved the video! And i have a question that doesn't let me sleep - how do you use music from games as the background - they don't get monetized by you? Or you file a dispute for fair use?

So much incredible autistic joy watching this video. Thank you Mr. Geller. :3

Fully a comedic choice, basically just copying an arrested development bit lol

Thanks for releasing on my birthday lmao

Came here to mention this. “It’s Nebula, you don’t have to bleep yourself… ok that’s a good gag.”

Great video! The thing I couldn't stop thinking about during Lies of P was Asimov's 3 laws of robotics. So many of the stories around them are dedicated to exploring how those laws position robots as inferior members of society. It's an interesting contrast with the Pinocchio stories that you discuss here that come at it from a different angle of what does it mean for Pinocchio (and created objects in general) to be elevated to a similar societal level as humans.

Great video, loved it. Was the choice of leaving swearwords censored in the nebula version a stylistic decision (outside of the obviously hilarious bit about Pinocchio in Venice) or a pg13 related decision?

Curious to know your thoughts on “Gepetto,” the 2000 film starring Drew Carey. I was kind of hoping you’d mention it so I’d know my sister and I weren’t the only ones who had ever seen it.

Oh FUCK YEAH

Ahhhh! After 3 playthroughs of Lies of P I've become a big Pinocchio obsessive. Can't wait to watch.
