2024-01-25 17:26:46 +0000 UTCLou Wilson's portrayal of Pinocchio in Dimension 20's Neverafter was probably my favorite Pinocchio. He draws more from the original Pinocchio story than the subsequent retellings--the crueler version of the tale. Lou's Pinocchio is hilarious, yes, but also grapples with the question of why he's been brought into existence in such a cruel world, and the temptations of just losing yourself to hedonism. The blue fairy (spoiler) isn't portrayed as a force of good, but rather a force of destiny--the god-like authors of the fairy tales imposing their will on the characters. Don't wanna spoil even more, but it's a great addition to the Pinocchio-verse!

So many of the stories around them are dedicated to exploring how those laws position robots as inferior members of society. It's an interesting contrast with the Pinocchio stories that you discuss here that come at it from a different angle of what does it mean for Pinocchio (and created objects in general) to be elevated to a similar societal level as humans.
