Staring into the Sun

Literal ascent as a narrative frame and metaphorical imperative has a rich history, and this talk is a great introduction to it. Something it brought to mind was playing "Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter" once upon a time, a game where you break the barriers to ascent from an underground civilization that is literally dying from the lack of fresh air, not knowing whether you'll even survive emerging into the surface world. In the game, light and darkness are used in spaces shaped for industrial power at the expense of humanity, with the upper echelons flooded with artificial light acting counter to the emergent lower levels. Ascent is framed as an inverted Promethean or diabolical defiance of order, with the sun, blue skies, and nature above being inconceivable to anyone who hasn't seen them.
