I think Gene is conflicted about Barry, because he was like the one student that seemed to worship Gene and pay attention to his every word, and then it turns out he killed the love of his life and lied about it, and kidnapped him and threatened his family that he worked so hard to get back into his life, but he also revitalized his career with literal blood money, that Gene willingly took. So I wouldn't be surprised if Gene does hate and love him, and I don't blame him

Gene, the entire show, was never backing down when it came to his money or even how he felt towards people in higher positions than him, as described by everyone from his past. But it's clear he's feeling extremely guilty when it comes to practically help cover up the murder of his girlfriend from her father, who IS intimidating. So yes, Gene is "weak-willed" and guilty, crazy, you all win this argument, woo. And regardless of what Gene could've done, the writers needed him to be there, and it made sense. Good choice overall.

I have to say, even having nothing to do with this show, maybe because I've felt it's such an underrated series. But seeing you three crying over Barry made me feel like a proud dad. I feel completely vindicated, because I was desperately camping for the trio to react to it. I was the one who told Roshi both this and The Bear were half hour shows. Them getting emotional is a testament to the quality of the writing, directing, and editing.

You just don't understand psychology maybe, Gene is already carrying guilt and is at war with himself in his mind. Jim Moss's existence already pressures Gene because of his relation to Janice. Jim questioning him intensely like that just broke him down because Gene knows what he's doing doesn't make sense, protecting Barry, not being selfless and doing something about the person who killed someone he loved. To have her father address him with the very thing he's been struggling with is basically telling Gene: "You cannot run away without an answer" like he has been so far. Gene was not weakwilled at all, he has been broken since her death and slowly breaking down before Jim even arrived and this was just the final straw. As for sympathizing with Barry and Sally, the whole show is about trying to understand their twisted perspectives so you gotta figure that one out on your own because it's what makes the show work. They are both very flawed and human.

I got a completely different interpretation, Sally and Barry are two different types of bad people yet we can empathize with them because we know how they got to that point. As for the thing with Gene, Janice’s dad is known for his manipulation tactics and I doubt any normal person wouldn’t already be close to breaking after what Gene has went through.

Out of an entire season of just….fucking everything and all the darkness and surprise lmao, somehow it still managed just completely throw me for a loop when Barry points that gun and you immediately hear “FREEZE! DROP THE FUCKING GUN BERKMAN!!!” and it takes a second to sink in that holy shit Barry actually got caught like he’s actually going down after seeing him make his way through every challenge presented to him. Insane season finale and even more insane season as a whole That whole scene with Albert ending with the Starting Now is genuinely something special like the amount of shit that went into that entire scene and the weight it held man my god. At even with all of that Barry fell right back into it IMMEDIATELY without even thinking about it

That kind of gay conversion torture is still a thing, its commonly done in countries that have made homosexuality illegal, and they try to "fix someone" by forcing them to watch gay porn and then use electric shocks or a drug that induces vomiting to cause a negative connection in the brain to being aroused.
