Art Restoration (and the Biggest Mod in Resident Evil History)

That's a really interesting question, and I know film restoration is totally its own school with lots of different versions. For instance, you've got remasters from film that look basically perfect (like A Space Odyssey), and you've also got tons of examples of it being done poorly (the weird color grading in Jurassic Park re-releases). ADDITIONALLY you've got the whole Star Wars thing, and then people attempting to do their own re-masters of the original star wars to get rid of all the post-release stuff...it's a wormhole of its own. I have no idea how much has been tried with damaged film rolls. There's the color-izing of old footage that seems along the same line, so... maybe?

Man, once again the thumbnail does a perfect job evoking what you're going for (and especially Baumgartner's channel). I recently became obsessed with Julian's channel and have been trying to share the love and ethos behind it. One thing I absolutely love is his adherence to making his work reversible and creating a separation layer so, technically, if someone wanted to repaint, they could, and still keep his repair work in place. There's also a strong tie to certain video game remasters, like Halo and Day of the Tentacle, where you can revert to original graphics with the press of a button to see what came before and how good it looks now. One thing I've wondered about is how this could relate to damaged film reels. Julian likes to "give the impression" of what he's restoring, rather than try to be 100% faithful. With older films that they find damaged scenes and try to restore them, or maybe a work print version or a VHS transfer where that's the only source they have (I'm thinking like Exorcist III or Hellraiser III), do you think there's a place for using CG to replace parts of the missing frame, or touching up corroded bits of the frame to give a better cohesion between the final film and the restoration? At first, that kinda seemed what they were doing with Justice League, but now it's got the budget and actors coming back for scenes . . . I don't know. TLDR; do you think CG might be used in the future to create a Baumgartner style restoration with film?
