I know this is an old post (I'm a new patron going through the commentary backlog) but your thoughts on caves keep making me think about a scifi book I read a while back, that has lived in the back of my head since: It's called The Luminous Dead and it's a psychological horror about caving, grief, and the loss of control over your reality.

I will vouch for Made In Abyss aswell, it deals entirely on the call of the void you talked about, and how people are drawn to explore the last remaining cavern on the planet, despite the fact that they can physically never resurface.
