This is such an interesting piece of characterization. Sure, our heroine wasn't really great so far, she was brusque and rude to basically everyone, but you feel for her and her goal, so you just kinda forgive her. And then this scene happens and her clearly seeing that the girl didn't want any of that mercy kill bullshit and had rather just stayed there, but Mizu needs the door so she kills the girl anyway. Yeah, but Beatrix didn't kill Copperhead's kid for fear of her telling someone about what she did. The Bride only either killed people that had horribly wronged her or people that were directly attacking her. She never preyed on a random innocent person for information and definitely never killed a witness just for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This show dances the line of having Mizu be sympathetic while having her never really be heroic; she is definitely solely focused on her revenge and she isn't kind to people in pursuit of getting it, but there are some things she just shouldn't do to remain a sympathetic protagonist. Killing a random child is definitely one of those things that would ruin her likeability, and personally I don't think it's in her character to do so.

Next episode with the thousand claws fight and more of mizu's backstory is arguably the best episode of the show, so I'm glad the situation deteriorated and Mizu is forced to fight them. It would also be something that she can't really come back from morally as a protagonist: kill a kid for fear of what they MIGHT do. We know that the kid turns out to be a rat, but if we watched him die, we would've never gotten that confirmation and I think that killing a child would've made Mizu completely unsympathetic to a lot of viewers going forward.

I loved this episode - I believe that the mute girl was pregnant and the bird was a metaphor. That's why she signed back and shook her head as if to say "No don't do this." That and her not having bruises, and incense burned to relax rather than physical injuries. To me it reads that she was achieved what Akemi is rejecting, she stole a happiness with the mob boss, the lesson that everyone around Akemi is trying to tell her. I think Mizu snapping that girl's neck is the first time it really hit me about how locked in she is on her revenge quest. I was expecting some hero kinda stuff to figure out some way to save the girl, but nope. After that scene I really looked at her differently the rest of the way.

One of those where it's hitting both. She absolutely kills her because she needs the door and that reveals part of her character. But she also struggles with it and clearly regrets it afterwards...and that also reveals part of her character, a part that the first part is suppressing.
