Back in the day, probably more people died from the poison than in modern days, but blowfish can be totally nonpoisonous depending on what they eat. Unfortunately, none or a few people die of this poison every year in Japan even today. Though it's illegal, some people love to eat the liver, the organ containing the poison, and even enjoy the tingling feeling on their tongues.
