Shapesmith is a Martian who hitched a ride back with Invincible when he went to Mars and accidentally started a parasite zombie apocalpyse. The flashes to Mars are to show us that those parasites now have a spaceship and that Shapesmith (who was copying the appearance of the astronaut who was infected on Mars) will probably be one of the only ones able to fight back against them. This is because Martians are immune to these parasites (they can only attach to things that can't shapeshift).

I think they were trying to make Amber more intelligent and not oblivious to Mark's actions like other superhero girlfriends who remain oblivious for years, but they just ended up making her come off like an asshole. The way they wrote it, she literally pretended not to know that Mark was Invincible and chastised him as a coward for running when she knew he went to go suit up. But I honestly think that was one of the few bad writing decisions in S1 and they never intended for her to come off the way she did. They wanted a girlfriend that would call the hero on his shit for missing plans, which is realistic, but they went too far with how she treated him and I don't think it was in her character to react the way she did when she found out.

Also when Mark and Amber were visiting the college that got attacked she starts talking down to Mark even to go as far to call him a coward for running away from the cyborgs when she knew the entire time he was fighting and getting his ass beat by them. If you can't tell how fucked up that is, then it speaks volumes to your character. Amber knew the entire time so she could have easily just broken up with him if she couldn't take being stood up all the time but instead feigns ignorance (which is another form of lying btw) and just makes Mark feel like a shit person who can't manage time when she knows he's out trying to protect. So no I wouldn't be pissed if my partner of a few weeks was lying to me just so they could keep me, their family and other people safe. In fact, him escaping and swapping places with the human astronaut is what caused the sequids to reactivate their hive-mind and destroy Martian society (since they were able to parasitize the human astronaut). Also the sink-hole Eve inadvertently caused didn’t kill anyone. Eve’s dad stated that it was a miracle that it didn’t result in any fatalities. So the mother and daughter in the newspaper were probably just injured not killed by the sinkhole disaster.
