OPLA Ep 8

Overall fantastic live action adaptation! The actually cooked! Looking forward to S2!

Comments

Shanks was only worth a Billy at the time plus he doesn’t have super crazy durability like king or big mom so it’s like how Hordy bit through luffy’s haki even after the timeskip But also he wasn’t trying to attack it that and it might be another reason

Lace King

It's gonna be interesting to see them implement the 3 hakis. Or any of luffys gears.

joshua barnett

The tattoo on Nami's arm is the symbol for pinwheel and orange, in memory of her mother.

Jimmy

My theory is that this was a little before he became a Yanko.

KiliSloe

one thing to note, shanks said it himself, that even when hungover, with his hand behind his back, he could take him, so he's a few leagues above mihawk when considering that.

I VisiBomb I

eh the rurouni kenshins movies are def better but this was decent

Charlie baker

Live action yu-gi-oh would be amazing, and would probably functionally be the easiest to pull off

Mr. Toastman

The in-universe explanation for it is that Shanks bet his arm on the new generation of pirates, and Luffy in particular. The out real reason for it is that Oda's editor told him that he needed to spice things up a bit and give the ending of that chapter a bit more impact, so he decided to take Shanks' arm.

Nick Baynes

I’ve nearly watched all of one piece and I honestly don’t know lol

Ruin

So question as a new fan of one piece, if Shanks has power comparable to Mihawk then how is a ordinary sea beast able to take his arm especially since he is to scare it away with a look? Was it to prove a point to Luffy or just a mistep in the writing?

Senjioh

I mean if THATS The Reason 1) hes 20, you dont change too much from 20-25/26, Its not like Stranger Things where they hit puberty and look massively different season to season. 2) He's not gonna be playing a 17 Year old forever, Luffy is not 17 anymore lol, he ages throughout the show especially with the several year Timeskip

Vincent S Deluca

I'm hopeful that the success of this season will give them more confidence in how they approach things moving forward

Matthew Grant

Considering everything this was a great live action anime adaptation but nothing really moved me drama or action wise. That being said it's probably because I've seen it already. Never thought we would get one piece live in the first place. This gives me hope that one day we'll get a live action YUGIOH! I just want it because I think it would be terrible which to me would be hilarious someone wearing the pharaoh hairstyle and drip plus the stances. Dont know about everyone else but I can't wait to see tashigi but I'm really here for BOA. There's gonna be a lot of waiting.

Leo

chopper and brook gonna be perma CGI lol. definitely might get a little harder to act when the CGI starts makin up entire characters

Vayne

We're definitely getting to Alabasta next season. They don't have time to drag out sagas for multiple seasons since each season takes at least a year to make and Iñaki can't play a 17 year old forever.

Denickart

Oda did criticize some of the changes he was forced to make.

Random Guy

Yeah, if they’re smart, they will hold off on Alabasta until (at least) season 3. Because the emotional ending of that arc won’t hit as well unless a certain character has been around long enough to feel like they could be a new member of the crew.

Bryann Kam

I guess it was in the manga but the Davyback games goes completely against Luffy's thing about being a pirate, which is having the most freedom in the world, to follow your dreams, etc.. Absolutely hated the Davyback thing, and the dude (Foxy?) being so fricken annoying, lol. Partly because his power is broken cause its so strong and really hard to fight against without plot convenience, heh.

Drake Rage

Maybe in the anime/manga but this isn't even that same Garp anyway, this Garp hella serious. Probably the only thing I didn't like about this show. Still best live action anime we've ever gotten fo sure.

The Divided One

We should remember that this version of the plot line was directly overseen by Oda so yeah Coby would if the author intends him to.

ClayPM

Robin isn’t actually that far lol she shows up before Chopper, she would 100% show up next season. After this it’s Loguetown/Reverse (1-2 Eps) Mountain, the stuff with Laboon (1 ep Max) and then Whiskey peak which is where we meet her for the first time. Chances are we will finish next season either heading to or arriving at Alabasta

Vincent S Deluca

I’m assuming they left it out for the sake of time and budget. Hachi would be a CGI nightmare lol I’m sure they’ll just straight up introduce him as the good guy he appears as in Saobody instead of making him a minor villian here.

Wolf

The thing I didn't like the most was Coby. There's noway he'd ever show disobedience to Garp.

Jamaal Ellison

I can see the end of s2 ending with robins reveal

Kumi Chan

the foxy davyback fight is canon

Derek

I think Robin will be next season, cause I thnk next season will end in Alabasta, and Robin appears in Alabasta as Ms. Sunday, we also gonna have ace in next season since they opening with Loguetown

Nuke XD

Man I liked this, A LOT. There were many great changes as to how the story progressed and what we got to see + the set and general vibe from the scenery was insane however the anime is still a loooooot better but it was great in its own way. The actual emotional and incredible scenes from the anime/manga were a lot worse, like these are the moments where you normally go "wow, this... this is actually so crazy, this is so good wtf" while in the life action it was all kinda meh-touching at most. Though what I enjoyed the most were the dialogues, imagery and "brutality" or more like a world of pirates and bounty hunter etc. just all of it beeing more realistic + the action and choreography were really cool aswell. For next season I hope we get up to alabasta because it might just make one piece finally break into mainstream, this arc is close to a masterpiece and imo by far the most underrated one piece arc. If they adapt it well enough and even improve the "slow" pacing a bit this might be really really really good. Like actually great because the storytelling and structure is honestly one of the best oda every came up with it is really... grand? Also im really afraid of how chopper is gonna look like, just please dont be a walking ball of messy cgi :D.

TimmSchmimm

yeah the 24/7 face close ups were goofy

TimmSchmimm

Oda already teased Chopper for the next season when they announced it so it's going to be interesting to see how they handle him. Probably a complete CG character. Jamie Lee Curtis is campaigning to be Dr. Kureha and the showrunner wants her as well.

SakakiMaya

how tf does anybody like this shitty ass arc

WarWolf

The dude who played Bogard must have killed at his audition because there's no way he had all this screentime in the original script lmao.

Argo2Unitard

*insert Vader screaming No!!!* lmao

Drake Rage

I got bad news for you fam, it's one of the show runner's favorite arcs.

S_Cero

The entire show's VFX budget would have gone into creating and animating a six armed octopus man fighting.

Argo2Unitard

Yeah, for the love of everyone's sanity, do not include the foxy pirates lol, I wanted Don krieg over them

GigaDirt

yeah way better then I expected 8 out of 10. why? because they didn't include the fight between hachi and Zoro like ugh how they leave out hachi.....maybe he will be in it later on. great adaption tho

KeYo

I always planned on watching One Piece but the Live Action pushed it to the top of my list. After watching the Anime and seeing the Live Action I was not disappointed. They did so well. It's understandable they couldn't recreate everything, and I am happy they didn't. They made it good for fans and newcomers. I do think we will see Robin next season especially if they follow a similar pacing. I can see them ending just before Skypiea.

Little Giant Ace

Roshi saying Mink when the Mink gets bonked.

BZD

W live action. I’m super curious how they gonna do Chopper next season lmao

Christopher Ross

I just watched the ending, I swear they better not do anything with the Foxy pirates, I am sure that Foxy pirate sht was complete filler, and even amongst the filler episodes, the Foxy pirate stuff was the worst for me, lmao.

Drake Rage

watch the behind the scenes too !

Radeon500

"Squeeze one out for the homie?" AYOOOO lmfao

Twine

the irony is zoro is the worst with naming every one of his attacks and yelling it loud before he does it lol.

Infinity

I’m just curious too see how they handle the future looks of some characters even the background characters

CAM

Gotta make a stop towards Arabasta and meet Croc, Vivi, Bon Clay & Chopper before we reach Skypiea

MrOuijaII

The sweetest tsundere doc, hopefully whatever direction they take with cgi goes well for them

Sham3ful

My fucking goat Bon chan gotta be there

Sham3ful

Strawhat Pirates - "Nothings gonna stand in our way!" Everything - "And I took that personally."

Papa Souls

Fun ass ride, i think the biggest testament to how good this adaption was is the damn near permanent smile on Roshi face during most of these episodes, really gives the feel good adventure vibes One Piece is supposed to give. Luffy is perfectly casted and pulls off the annoyingly optimistic vibes well. sidenote: I think the Foxy poster was just a easter egg, they also showed Cavendish and that man appearance is WAY into the future

MrOuijaII

I know, I ain't saying too much, just her intro since it's p established

Jazmyne Mattucci

Yo roshi Robin is definitely gonna be in season 2 she is introduced even before alabasta arc Hyped for the next season

A.D.Z

This live action adaptation was some heat. I was one of those one piece haters cause it was so long that I'd never get into it but after finishing the live action I started one piece not long after. I can't wait for a season 2

rosenthal

so what’d happen for next season? skypiea, smoker and chopper?

212

Yk what it’ll prob end with the crew getting to Alabasta and meeting him, or it can end with the final scene being Ace at the bar

Luffy_77

omg!! i forgot to add. they did an excellent job of displaying their powerful characters this early on in the show. cuz as we all know they become op asf later on so i just hope that they do a good job for stronger characters moving forward (something that has to do with a fire man ;) )

Sergio

he might make a cameo i feel like

joe

yea (also be careful with explaining robin lol)

joe

A few thing. 1) The cgi in this show was amazing, i personally don’t have a single issue with it, however i’m concerned with how they’re going to adapt chopper next season cuz it’s gonna be expensive asf. 2) i love all the straw hats, but the actor who plays luffy needs to watch or read one piece. from what i’ve heard his actor knows the least from the main cast about one piece which is hilarious. he just needs to work on his delivery and mannerisms. like when he’s supposed to look like an idiot at times he looks like he’s being sarcastic rather then him actually being fr lmao. just a personal nitpick. 3) btw robin is supposed to be in next season (not gonna spoil when). other than that they did amazing, i heard they already have the script ready and just waiting for a time to start shooting which will probably be early next year (with castings being towards the end of this year).

Sergio

Was sounding like a Celestial Dragon for a moment there lmaoo

Sham3ful

Yeah I heard that part was in a cover story.

Isaac

Megan Fox cast as Robin. Happy Halloween.

Isaac

I'm speculating they left him out purely out of budget reasons and had to cut him. Maybe he'll make an appearance when opla success gets a bigger budget.

Isaac

I think that's the least "Garp" Garp can be without absolutely murdering Luffy. Overall... I expected a lot less from this series but am extremely pleasantly surprised on how good it turned out. Honestly, I am really interested in how they are going to live action some of the things coming up and how far they intend to take the show.

JB3

When Chopper comes by, I'm already setting my expectations on them changing the lore of his appearance for convenience. Animating a cgi reigndeer who will be on this crew every episode will be too expensive. A kid actor or kid passing actor with practical prosthetics like the Fishmen is what I'm expecting so yall should brace yourselves for that too. Also I hope to fucking God that Jamie Lee Curtis play Kureha. She loves One Piece from what I heard and that would be God tier casting.

Isaac

Listen Idk if anyone commented this (not gonna scroll all the comments) but the Zoro vs Mr.7 fight is cannon and was mentioned later on in the anime/manga, they just never went into detail.

romaiiiii

Damm Sheera with the fishman racism. Sound and awful lot like what the WG would say lmao

Oliver

Literally not a spoiler. Dude just said Garp was strong af when he was younger. Zero plot points given.

Isaac

Honestly, it isn't impossible. Even if just watching a handful of episodes a week if you have time. Plus, there are some points where the recap is kind of egregious. I was trying to find a specific clip somewhere in the 400s and the episode didn't start until like the 7 minute mark. Depending on where you are in an arc, it isn't super uncommon either. Still a ton of episodes, but some are deceptively short.

Adiuva

You can tell they put their heart and soul into making this. This would have been pure Gold if they had some of Disney's wasteful budget or that Amazon money poured into it, but they did the most they could with what they had, and made something very enjoyable. One of my personal favorite scenes that did not happen was when Arlong rips Zoro's bandages and he is absolutely SHOOK, like Arlong considers humans to be completely inferior to fishmen, but that is the first time we see Arlong being scared looking at Zoro's wound and how he was still fighting like a Demon against them, Arlong was like "How the fuck are you even still alive with wounds like this?!" Woulda loved that scene, but they used their budget efficiently so I can't complain. Definitely a top tier live-action adaptation! For Sheera, about the importance of the Grand Line map, it is actually very important, which the Marines guard as a top priority because the important people in the World Government, important places, the big-name pirates are all outside of the 4 seas (East/West/South/North Blue seas). The Marines safeguard the Grand Line map so that most people don't even get the chance to move on to the part of the world where the important stuff is happening. They need the Grand Line map to even know how to leave the 4 seas to go to where the real action is at, in the World.

Drake Rage

I'm sure the foxy was just a lil reference. No way they waste time n money on that arc

Digital Alikin

LMAO LUPA THE PROPHET STRIKES AGAIN

Slacker

My only real gripes was Zoro only using two swords for the majority of the show and their skippings of Sanji vs Gin/Zoro vs Hachi other than that solid 7.5

Xanny Man

Those two things are completely unrelated. Being hyped for the live action because Oda has super high praises for it makes sense because Oda quite literally made the story the live action is based upon. Supporting a political statement because your favorite actor said to is a terrible comparison.

Seanthebomb

That's just how it is. I used to clown on One Piece with my friends and say that I'd never watch it cause it's too long but then I actually started watching it when I was bored and it quickly became one of my top 3 favorite anime. Ngl as long as you just watch at your own pace, take breaks and don't force yourself to binge a ton of episodes every day, you'll enjoy it and ignore the episode count as you get more into the story

Slacker

@Unbeknownst - When the DragonBall Evolution film first came out, Toriyama expressed support for the live action movie. Years later, he expressed his true feelings (or perhaps his opinion changed over time). I'm not saying that'll happen with Oda, and I think it'd be unfair of me to compare DBE with OPLA, but it's pretty uncommon for mangakas to (openly) rip on adaptations. It's also pretty uncommon for the author to say nothing at all. It feels like there's an expectation that authors promote adaptations, no matter how involved they were. That's not to say Oda is lying or speaking a script, but I'll be curious to hear his thoughts on the live action series 10 - 20 years from now. Perhaps his opinion will stay largely the same, or maybe the timeskip will give him to reflect.

Merfhew

I honestly just don’t have enough time in the day. I would have to drop everything I do to catch up. Might pick up the manga.

Art of Trolling

honestly, if u liked this show, u will love the anime. I used to be like u, then i could up to the anime so fast and somehow began reading the mange, that how good it is...trust

Isaac Cobbinah

Yo now that you mention it, i hear it lol. Good ear

Kero~Sama

They forgot the most important fishman Hatchan, hella surprising because of the fact how important his character is later on. And that crazy fight he had with Zoro on arlong park if anyone is curious how that turned out I suggest looking up the anime version of Zoro vs Hachi on youtube.

Gunny

They ate. I’m mad I judged before watching. Still not watching that long ass anime lmao there’s no way to catch up at this point 😂.

Art of Trolling

I doubt they’ll add that 😭yk how Twitter people be like 😭

Idk

@zay In the opening scene, Garp was entrusted with carrying out Roger's execution, so that alone would lead anybody capable of minor critical thinking to think that Garp was/is probably at/near Roger's combat strength.

Solemnity

go fish

yoongi

Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Hasnain Khan

lmao luffy trying to keep his peace for years against grandpa

yoongi

Praying for Muppet Chopper. i want that Dark Crystal type shit for him mhm(also we MIGHT see Robin in s2 only cuz of how she is introduced. cuz we see her first before we see Chopper)

Jazmyne Mattucci

Yeah I think Roshi forget that she shows up as an antagonist in the Alabasta arc before joining the crew.

Wolf

I feel like they should still do that arc you guys were talking about, but it would be cool to see them do it as a movie to kind of get all the good parts in 1 go, then start the next arc in the season after. Assuming we get that far obviously.

Yolo Samurai

Listen bro, you're expecting perfection... if Luffy was all serious with a half smile or without a smile on his face 24/7 you'd be complaining too. This is as good as it's gonna get, compared to many over LA anime adaptations... this is in a world of its own, you really wanna complain about it? Being picky with certain things? Go and watch other live action adaptations and see how horrible and unwatchable those are, then you'll see how great this adaptation really is.

Luffy_77

I do apologize if you see this as a spoiler but in the live action alone, if you didn't caught when he said he should've been fleet admiral but rejected it, when He was there as a representative for the world government in Rogers execution, when hes ordering one of the seven warlord to go after a rookie pirate and when He casually defeated luffy without a sweat. and your blind AF to see his power scaling. For those who didn't catch those foreshadowing then as a one piece jehovas door to door salesman. I suggest you read one piece manga, whether your against or for with my first comment. this weeks chapter is LIT seeing peak garp in action for the first time.

SeriouslyJet

Yo we gonna see the man the myth the legend Bon chan next season???

Luffy_77

That aint Robin, thats Miss All Sunday bro

Luffy_77

Aye they might redeem the foxy arc, it has some potential in live action

Luffy_77

We Are at the end always gets me. Super well done.

Carlos

that's like saying you support a political statement because it's what your favorite actor said.

Nathan Elkin

Solid show. Can't wait to see how they do Chopper and who plays Robin 😌

Arturo

I’m not talking his regular voice. Lupa sometimes talk with a deep voice when making jokes. That voice sounds like Arlong

Kodyak Combs

Im crying at the delayed reaction to “it’s a sword fish!” LMFAOOOO I’m so excited for season 2. Oda had hinted in his thank you video that the straw hats will be looking for a doctor next season 👀😭 my baby is coming 🥹. Glad y’all enjoyed it as much as I did

Kameron Renae

Nami's tatoo is supposed to be a pinwheel with a tangerine at the tip. To honor her mother.

Exiova

lol maybe you’ll see him fight in season 15

Castles

Nah arlong has a way of talking through his teeth and enunciating words in a weird way, I don't hear it at all.

John Cedar

Next season I need to see luffy hit the fist of equal rights on vivi

JayTheRookie

"I can still take you" from Shanks is crazy. I never watched the anime so that line alone delivered with absolute sincerity makes Shanks a completely new character now, he isn't just a goofy drinker. I'm guessing he could actually fold Mihawk if he wanted to which is insane, I need to see some of him fighting for real in S2.

John Cedar

I respect your opinion. It’s only season 1 though so there’s always room for improvement as the budget gets bigger and the actors get more comfortable in their roles. I would never say it was a perfect season but I can tell they actually care about the material and love the characters they’re portraying. To each there own, of course.

Wolf

Is it a really a spoiler? He is just saying garp was really powerful when he was younger

Kumi Chan

Everyone's more than entitled to their opinions, absolutely, but I have to say this: if the mangaka himself believes in the live action and its quality, then I sure as hell believe in it too. I thought the first season was brilliant, and cannot wait to see what S2 has in store!

Unbeknownst Man

I can’t wait for chopper next season

Saucy Jonathan

Ayoo

earthphoenix7068

Am I the only one who thinks Arlong sounds like Lupa?

Kodyak Combs

Literally no one asked you to spoil this

zay

Nah, Foxy's arc wasn't filler but it was a "breather" arc so some fans tell newcomers it's okay to skip to or fast forward to it's last two episodes.

Brawler

I was surprised by how well they did this live action.

Leon

For those who hasn't catch up to the latest one piece manga. Garp in his peak was every pirates nightmare. In His peak He could go toe to toe with Roger.

SeriouslyJet

Chopper and robin both in the alabasta saga

logan

'squeeze one out for the homie' pauseee lupa

mello

Chopper finna be cgi nightmare

yahye

Robin should definitely be next season. It said somewhere that season 2 will cover everything before Alabasta and Alabasta itself

Ohais

loved your reactions to this, also can't wait for season 2.

Antonia Moore

Ah, I thought that was just filler.

Don'tReadMyUsername

Foxy from the Foxy Pirates. The guy with the Slow Slow Fruit.

C2TheHomie

It seems unlikely that Netflix would dish out as much money as they did on the show if they didn't have faith in it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there were reports (about a year ago) saying that the first test screening did quite poorly, so numerous reshoots were required. Is that what you're referring to? Maybe the show went over budget as a result, which would explain why the final 2 episodes couldn't be finished in time.

Merfhew

Can someone tell me who they were talking about at the end?

Don'tReadMyUsername

w show , w reaction . Glad y’all enjoyed it

Darius Mims

A bit of info I found out for people. They had filmed 2 more episodes after this to cover the next island with Smoker, but Netflix didn't let them finish them. So here is hoping S2 will come a little sooner and have more episodes now that Netflix has faith in the show.

Scott Tyson

Season 2 needs twice the budget as Season 1 (Hollywood did Pikachu & Sonic right so I believe in Chopper) Plus all the crazy powers lol yeah double or triple the budget for season 2

ShaquanVirse

I was definitely skeptical of this adaptation at first but I did appreciate for what it is and I think the actors did a good job capturing the essence of the characters. So far my favorite characters in this are Zoro and Sanji.

Devin B

I understand that, I just don’t agree with that choice. Manga is manga, live action is live action. I’m sure they are proud of their work, like Game of Thrones directors were with their season 8. You can tell where the Director’s influence begins and ends in projects like these, and it heavily shows the type of show they want to make, which boggles my mind because I have no idea how long they plan to steamroll this project. It’s silly, nothing more.

Nathan Elkin

It pales compared to what it could be. It felt like they did one take for every scene that wasn’t an action scene, and even then, I’m not sold by Luffy. He seems like he cares too much when he’s acting.

Nathan Elkin

Apparently the director was trying to capture the feel of the manga (link below). But I agree that the cinematography was bad outside of the action scenes. Hopefully that is something changed for season 2. https://www.looper.com/1380899/one-piece-marc-jobst-explains-key-difference-between-show-marvel-interview/

HalfroSamurai

This show was a fun ride. I still believe the Ruroni Kenshin live action still takes the cake for me as best live action adaptations, but for a western produced show, this was the best. If yall haven't seen the live action kenshin movies, that would be a dope trio reaction if there is any down time!

pmreez

The live action of Cowboy Bebop had the same problem, and I bet the live action Last Airbender show will have that problem too. I don’t know why they can’t set the camera down across the room from the characters and just let the scene play out. The sets and story is already captivating enough. People don’t understand the importance of different mediums and how the audience interacts with each type. Anime has many cuts because of its delivery of jokes and characters designs, with exaggerated, abstract depictions of reality, whereas live action sort of demands a sense of seriousness, as far as it’s investment is concerned. You don’t want to be taken out of a scene or moment, but bad camera work will do just that.

Nathan Elkin

For as many anime fans who complain about the show not being 1-to-1 of the anime, it’s easy to forget that it’s supposed to be an ‘adaptation’ and not a ‘remake’. I’ve had friends who have skipped out on the anime because of its goofiness or the length of the series but said they loved the LA and that it convinced them to give the anime a try. Oda is trying to reach an audience that might not like/watch anime while also trying to please us fans and I feel like he did a great job.

Wolf

One thing with the intro, Nezumi is Japanese for mouse which is why his character is designed like that

Adiuva

I thought I was the only one that thought the camera work in this show felt cheesy. I don't typically pay attention to these things but it was pretty glaring for this show. It could be the case that it's the first season and they spent most of their budget on CGI and costume design. Hopefully season two is better.

Kass

I can’t get over the use of the camera. Don’t get me wrong, come flame me if you want, I just think this show was over edited. Not the CGI aspects, but rather the way the camera build’s off a scene. Characters often feel like they’re just reading their lines instead of having a conversation. The anime does close ups during static shots and to stretch time, not for the actual conversations. I’m fine with the combat and CGI, but the composition of this makes it feel like a parody, not a 1-to-1 live action. “It’s not supposed to be 1-to-1”. I get that, but I’m not sold on the actors or direction.

Nathan Elkin
