Yeah he was definitely way too strong to have lost it, but I forgot if I read the reason in a discussion, or something I wanted to believe that sounded kinda plausible, lol. I think Shanks was a big deal even back then (Mihawk knew Shanks at that point, Mihawk says something like "I was surprised to see someone of your caliber return without one of your arms"), and it makes it more impactful that someone that strong ignored his own safety to protect Luffy even at the cost of his arm.

I believe the reason Shanks lost an arm was because his first thought was to shield Luffy with his own body, he didn't have time to think, his first instinct was to grab Luffy to shield him and got his arm bitten off. I do think the anime scene was more impactful, because Luffy was hugging Shanks and crying really loudly and Shanks said something like "you are safe now, don't cry" and Luffy says "But Shanks! your arm!" Then the "camera" zooms out and it is revealed that Shanks had lost an arm. Absolutely legendary scene in the anime.

I totally get what Roshi is talking about. This show takes itself seriously, but the setting of One Piece is light hearted and sometimes silly. It's ok to have that kind of setting, but the characters can't be winking at the camera all the time and acting like everything is dumb. Buggy will literally kill you. Sure, he's kind of silly in concept, but he's dangerous and never stops being dangerous. If you take your show seriously and let your audience buy in and not feel dumb for caring about the world, it will be a killer show.

To be fair, when he first showed up, he was a credible threat. He was blasting Buggy Balls in random directions, and his powers are fairly versatile and tricky to counter. Part of why he was scarier here was because he had the villagers chained up in a captive audience, and we were able to see how normal people reacted to him, as opposed to fearless and/or crazy people like Luffy. Also, in the anime, Buggy and his crew were just having a party, so the stakes didn’t seem so high.

People headcanon that Shanks was in East Blue in Luffy's village because he wanted to meet a certain somebody's son who he has strong ties to. (spoilers): Also to respond to ur og comment, Shanks had a billion beri bounty atp but he let his arm be bitten on purpose. He explained it partially with both Whitebeard and Rayleigh that he bet his arm on Luffy's future and that Luffy inspired him because he reminded him of Roger.

You seem to forget that when buggy got introduced they is exactly how they portrayed him. His first introduction was him force choking his own crew member. He's just more of a gag character now, but in the beginning he was a real threat in the east blue.

If you want the correct answer to why shanks gave up his arm and not all these other people just going off of speculation. Oda himself said that he did not want that scene to happen that way in the manga, because it doesn't make sense, but his EDITORS, not him, convinced him that it would be more emotional if shanks gave something up for luffy as a lesson. So once again, it was not Odas original intent for shanks to lose an arm, it was a suggestion given to him to make it more dramatic and emotional.

About Shank's arm getting bit off, we gotta remember that it happened 10 whole years ago when he first started doing pirate stuff with his own crew. And it wasn't like a 1v1 standoff, it lunged at Luffy and he got in the way. He probably didn't even actually know Haki yet, just used it instinctively. He wasn't always at the level he is now, just like Luffy started out having serious fights with characters like Buggy.

I can't watch something unless it's in the original language its written for. I especially hate dubs on live action stuff, it makes it so much more cheesy. But I think the Japanese for this doesn't sound cheesy to you because you're not familiar with the language as it's spoken.
