Owarimonogatri Ep 1

Damn they jumped RIGHT into the fuckery

Comments

monogatari is big in japan and it's considered more of a "critical success" then a mass one. fans tend to also be big fans which makes more money. also kizu (and monogatari, and suicide sensei or anything shaft was doing around this time) pretty much was a passion project which is why the style and direction are nothing like anything that was selling well at the time

van

Owari is good from start to end

by chances

It doesn't look like it, but Monogatari series is fairly popular within the anime industry. It's not a blockbuster, but it's well known within those who appreciate it. Its hype died down a bit since there's been no recent adaptation but back then, it was relatively well received.

Kal

It's Monogatari season so i'm back here for another ride. And I'm sure someone's said this already but this show had insanely strong DVD/Bluray sales. The people who fuck with it support it.

Trinares

Brooooo, I've been waiting for this letss gooooo. Had to re-sub for monogatari man. Alright before watching the reactions.... i HOPE they at least remember the characters names

Oisif

Oh shoot I'm excited for more Owarimonogatari. There are some crazy stuff in here.

NJ

Yeah it was kinda underground in the west but in Japan it was really popular when it aired. And the light novel series is considered one of the goats. DVD's, figures, and merch sold really well for this IP.

Danny

To answer Roshi's question, maybe this show wasn't that popular in the west, but the novels and the anime were BIG in Japan, and it has really great fame in there.

dani lizano

It's def not mainstream, but I don't think it's low sales wise. Wiki is telling me over a million DVDs/BDs were sold for Bake/Nise.

Greg Harrison

I don't get what you're saying here, can you explain

danial javady

Yehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Hasnain Khan

Reaction just [CalebCity - Telling a story to an "if that was me" person] tiring af

Skeletan

Monogatari is popular as fuck. Ya'll just in some small dumb ass circles lol

Skeletan

It's meant to be watched all in one go. Idk why they split it up but in Japan it was aired as a full 2h broadcast.

Aden O'Brien

I mean they definitely should watch it all in one go

Danger Tomato

Yess, but it's split into 4 episodes on Crunchyroll, so I wonder if they are going to react to all four or just the first one. All of them would be nice tho:)

Nicklas Madsen

wait 2 hours? thats crazy OOOO

earthphoenix7068

OOOO

Finally

lyssa

It has the highest selling anime blu rays of all time accross all its installments and until not that long ago Bake alone held that record.

Homura

Ngl I have no idea how they funded all the installments of this series. I'd imagine it has to be fairly popular in Japan though. It just didn't get much success over here cus it's nothing like what Western audiences tend to consume. Also studio shaft, same guys as madoka and the first few eps of zom100 are insane. Madoka was an anime original an god knows how hard it is to get funding for a series without a pre existing fan base. Shaft just seem to be determined to make batshit crazy shows it seems and I here for it

Ougi

I don't think so. It's more of just japan being a country where school is taken very seriously and cheating is something you just don't do. Leaving the class meeting would also make you seem like the delinquent in class which is frowned down upon too. The teacher is also present. It's not like Oikura is keeping everyone from leaving on her own. Spoilers: Oikura has different motives entirely because she just despises Araragi with a passion (understandably).

Ice

so hyped for this season

Vueko

Easy to do when you have no idea what it is and are just watching a bunch of new anime that came out that season blind.

Daryll

I hope they don't accidentally move on to Owarimonogatari 2 before watching Koyomi

Misatos Beercan

Starting with owari is some of the most unholy shit I've ever heard

Ice

You can watch Koyomi either after Owari s1 or before Owari s1. It doesn't really matter.

Ice

Doesn't that much of a point difference mess up with the average and make it harder to get a passing grade? Maybe that's why they wanted to find out who cheated

Misatos Beercan

When do they watch Koyomimonogatari again? I forgot, is it after this and before Owarimonogatari?

Misatos Beercan

Roshi about your question about how they funded this show: Bakemonogatari is the second best selling TV anime blu-ray/dvd release of all time and the rest of the series was only a little bit less successful per season. It never really took off in the west but before streaming took over the Monogatari series was just printing money, and SHAFT also released Madoka Magica two years after Bakemonogatari which is also among the greatest selling TV anime of all time so they could just keep pumping them out.

GrImProphecy

My favorite arc

nemui

Thank you for the upload

tanaya

Ah this is my favorite part. This was actually my introduction to the Monogatari series I enjoyed this episode so much I went back to watch the correct order.

Daryll

RECAP (And just some random stuff to keep in mind/remember): Let me start off by saying Ougi is not a good person in the story as far as we know (as of Tsukimonogatari). Its been revealed that she was the whole reason Nadeko was turned into a snake god, and it's also implied that Ougi is the person responsible for that weird ass kidnapping in Tsukimonogatari. As far as we know, she's the final boss (at least that's how Ononoki described her). She's very clearly trapped Araragi in the room of her own accord. She also hasn't really had an actual character introduction till now. She just kinda appeared randomly, started talking about traffic lights, and then Araragi told us she's Oshino's niece. Another important thing to take note of in this arc is Araragi's sense of justice. His parents are police officers and have been described as being very strict. Even his sisters' whole persona's are based of the fact that they're "heros of justice". Araragi was someone who really believed in the "system", but when we first meet him, he's an edgy teen that talks about how he doesn't need friends because friends make him weaker as a human. This arc happens pretty much right before all the Nadeko Medusa stuff, and right after all the time travel, Shinobu Time stuff with the "darkness" appearing, in case you care about the timeline. Oikura has been foreshadowed a couple times, so while it does seem like she's come out of nowhere, she has actually been part of the story in some ways. (her involvement in the story has indirectly been mentioned in Nekomonogatari by Hanekawa for example) Ararararararagi has a VERY bad memory. He generally forgets a lot of stuff, which gets pretty important this season. He forgot Nadeko exists in season 1 for example, even though she was his childhood friend. Now we're finding out that he forgot about this whole class trial thing, until Ougi brought him into the room and forced the story out of him. Each Season has focused on different things overall: First season (Bake, Nise, Kizu, Neko): Side Character Introductions, Araragi is the "hero" that saves everyone Second Season (Second Season, Hana): Side Character Arc Conclusions, Araragi's role as the "hero" gets challenged. Most of the people he "saved" in season 1 haven't actually been saved and need to find a way to save themselves. Final Season (Tsuki, Owari S1/S2, Koyomi): Araragi's role as the hero is completely shattered. This season is pretty much only focused on developing Araragi and exploring his hero complex and overall personality. Hope this helps... Feel free to ask questions during the reactions and we'll try and clear them up as long as they're not spoilers.

Ice

Yea I would say this one was my favorite for sure. Really excited to rewatch this with yall

Dolfy

Monogatari really doesn't have that many seasons. It has three: First Season, Second Season, and Final Season. They were just all seperated into smaller arcs and released that way. The reason it feels so long is because you guys are doing min 4 month breaks even for "seasons" that are 4 episodes long. (I won't be commenting on this much because I feel like an impatient asshole saying it, but: You guys should at the very least try to react to more than just owarimonogatari this time. The faster we get episodes, the quicker this series will finally be over. You guys can stop stresssing about it and us monogatari fans won't be having an aneurysm waiting 4-6 months for like 4-12 episodes. It'll also make the story actually comprehensible, or so I hope. There's about 24 episodes left in total) Regardless, Monogatari only has about 80 episodes. That's shorter than AOT. It's not *that* insane to have the money to adapt 80 episodes of a show. Bakemonogatari was also a smash hit when it released so they had their reasons to adapt it. Madoka also really helped because it was also a smash hit and funded the rest of monogatari.

Ice

The start of my favourite season of anime ever.

Ougi

Her last name "Oikura" translates to "how much" in English, so she is called "how much".

あなん

They been paying attention, they are smart.

Hi How are ya

Bruh, Bakimonogatari was the second highest selling anime of all time when it came out, surpassed only by Evangelion. The money continued to roll in with Nisemonogatari and Monogatari Second Season. The series was a money making machine for Studio Shaft. The numbers were actually insane.

auxag

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.... yay

Taylor Moon

Were they fucking with it and following along/paying attention or just kinda vibing along?

this is one long ass username

yes

Ethan L

glad to finally see monogatari again !! hyped for the rest of the season :)

Ethan L

first off, SO excited you guys are watching this season, owari and owari part II are my absolute favorite monogatari seasons. truly banger ep after banger ep. also, re: monogatari getting all of these seasons: monogatari is much more popular than you think, especially in Japan. It's not as well known/liked in the mainstream, especially in the west (partially because so much of the humor is japanese language puns that just wouldn't work with an english dub, and because of araragi's cringe perv moments + all the gross lolicon stuff), but it did great on merch + dvd/blu-ray sales and was pretty financially successful in that regard afaik. I don't know if it still is, but for many years bakemonogatari was the highest selling post-2000 anime on dvd/blu-ray

Alix

Did they also react to all the previous seasons?

this is one long ass username

Thank you!

xima

apparently this show was the second highest selling anime for Blu-ray/cd's of all time since 2016. However, in the post 2000's this is the highest selling anime. Also the light novel was really popular which helped the show as well. The studio then made a vow to basically adapt all of the series.
