Wei Wu Wei (action through muscle relaxation) is only the first step to internal practice, as the goal is to teach the body to stop collecting the energy in the muscle fibers and send it outside of the palms instead through the meridians. That's what practitioners call Fa Jin. In a realistic fight, no matter how powerful Yujiro is, he would have lost dramatically. There is even a contradiction in the story as Yujiro speculates that he's gonna win simply because "cathartic release is impossible without exerting strength" as if he totally forgot he just saw the old man break a wall with his relaxed fist before him... If you don't get it : the old man proved muscular tension to be unnecessary to exert strength therefore literally proving Yujiro's logic wrong, and yet, this logic is used as a twist in the battle... There is a reason why Tai Ji practitioners train through slow movements. It's for the body to memorize and integrate the forms into its parasympathetic memory, so that when the practitioner faces a danger the body can move on its own, as if it had an independant brain separated from the practitioner's. When in a fight to the death, a master's movements may seem to be almost as fast as the speed of light. In fact a real Tai Ji fight ever lasts more than 2 seconds, as the goal is to neutralize the opponent as fast as possible, either through physical handicap or death. In ancient times, there were traditional Tai Ji tournaments held in the deep rural zones of China, but the numbers of deaths resulting from it were so high that it became forbidden by the law. Under realistic circonstances, Yujiro would have died within seconds as the laws of physical strength do not apply in such circumstances. So like I said, despites his practical background in martial arts, the author of Baki is completely ignorant on how Chinese Nei Jia works. The problem is not about "taking something that fundamentally applies in some way to martial arts and pushing it to the extreme", it's about not understanding the basic principles of it. But it's okay. I've been reading Baki since the 2000's so it's not like I was foreign to its muscle-obsessed formula and to the underlying political sentiment behind the story. It was the only interesting martial arts manga at the time since Tekken Chinmi so I had no other choice ("Tough" by Tetsuya Saruwatari was alright before it turned into a MMA power fantasy pretty quick). I was just regretting that not many Japanese martial artists know about how Chinese internal martial arts work (despites how many of their animes have characters throwing energy balls), since Japan is mostly known for their own branches of Wai Jia (external arts) a.k.a. mostly Karate, Judo and Jiu Jitsu (Morihei Ueshiba was the exception as he studied Nei Jia through Ba Gua in China and developped Aikido from it). The only manga I've seen to show a realistic portrayal of internal martial arts has been "Kenji" by Fujiwara Yoshihide and Matsuda Ryuchi. But even then, many of the practice's elements were occulted or simplified in the story. Either out of ignorance or out of secrecy I still can't tell.

Baki is a fun martial arts show, but you can tell the author comes from a background of Karate and MMA. Because he doesn't understand Nei Jia very much. This episode felt a materialist trying to understand energy work from a muscular point of view.

So it’s not that Baki necessarily cares about him being the strongest/losing but more so that this man has always been an overwhelming display of strength and dominance in his life and this is literally the FIRST time he’s seen him even back up from an opponent. So it makes sense he feels an array of anger, pride and frustration. That’s his father, the STRONGEST creature on earth. Yujiro however as you can see is not only a man of great strength but technique as well even given his size. But amongst all else, he recognizes and respects true strength, hence the speech at the beginning. hey y'all i recommend Kengan Ashura after Baki ends not to crap on Baki it's a fun show but Kengan receives less love just because it stuck to cgi. I think it has a better story and the fights are very well choreographed i'd love it if you check it out one day. <3

I think Yujiro was actually scared at first when the old man was trying to punch him, but afterward he figured out his secret and how to do it so he no longer feared it. Yujiro is seen as the strongest in the world but he is also a genius. He can watch something and learn it very quickly.
