I feel like the way the flashbacks were shown pointed me in that direction. It kinda looked like it was robins own flashback. Also the fact that Kiruko didn't bring the beam gun with the logo on it and Maru not going plot wise is because Robin would've seen the Tokio resemblance or noticed the logo and wouldve flipped out sooner. That and the fact that he asked about Mimihime before Shiro. Could be me reading too much into it.

My reasons for dropping the series probably wont be because of this scene but i read the manga ahead and it gets pretty lame from this point onwards. Once you figure out what happened back at the academy, the mystery is gone and the story feels linear.

This scene is really disgusting but they way they did it is really well done. Because we are feeling the perspective of the main character in that they were actually being groomed by this fucking weirdo the entire time. We think this guy is a great guy and we really want to see her meet him and in turn we also trust him, only to come to find out the guy was just using the orphanage to groom people the entire time. Hopefully he dies soon. I think the most sickening part of this is that she still trusts him and looks up to him, to me anyways.

Also The Eclipse itself is presented more as part of grand horrifying spectacle, sometimes a thing being so over-the-top can allow people to experience a little more emotional distance (so-to-say) from it compared to Heavenly Delusion’s sexual assault which is far more intimate in how distressing on a conceptual and mental level it is. So it isn’t unbelievable that some might be personally more disturbed by what happened in Heavenly Delusion than Berserk, despite the latter being more gratuitous and over-the-top and literally higher in body-count.

Another masterfully crafted episode. Animation, music, and overall direction. The shot of Kiruko walking down that hall where the pitch black at the end of the hall feels ominous and makes it eerie since it feels like it's getting closer. The parallel of the alarms going off in the facility with the kids, but in Kiruko's scene OUR alarms are going off instead. The focus on darkness and their shadows. And when his shadow revealed the handcuffs, we get a closeup where the cuff completely frames Kiruko's shadow, indicating how he is utterly trapped. And I think a bonus that the shadow is framed, not the physical body. Maybe pointing more towards the boy trapped in that body as well. Not to mention Kensuke Ushio's work with the music. That heavy bass that sounded dissonant when it slid down to its next note and felt like something was terribly wrong. My stomach started turning the moment I saw that empty hallway. It's like a horror movie sequence. Except this actually genuinely horrified me. Even before it actually happened. Props to the production team. They say the manga is more graphic but this... the way they built that up was on a different level.

While the tomato splitting is definitely meant to represent defilement, the loss of innocence (for the Takahara Academy students and Kiruko) and such, I don’t think it’s meant to be specifically or primarily symbolic about the body parts involved in sexual assault. It’s more concerned with themes than anything else.

Only in the sense it had more had more direct on-page nudity and less extreme close-up shots/panels. For some people the addition of color, movement, voices, and soundtrack as part of the change in medium makes a major difference in heightening the experience and/or making it feel more visceral. So it’s understandable how some people may end up feeling more distressed by the anime’s depiction of it, even if the manga had more explicit nudity depicted and less obscured angles and extreme close-ups.

Caught up to the manga and after seeing it animated, I have to say that while what has happened to Kiruko is horrible, I'm not personally seeing it as glossed over. I personally think that this tracks to be a realistic reaction considering Haruki/Kiruko's overall character and feelings towards Robin prior to this. Some are saying it was glossed over, but I think it's playing out in a way it does for most victim's where there isn't an instant gratification but I don't think that means it's being tossed aside. Of course we'll have to see how it all pans out since the story isn't over, and I don't want to potentially spoil (anymore than already possibly done). In no ways will this be a "perfect" telling for everyone, but this is a part of Haruki/Kiruko's story, so it will go in the way that the character experiences it rather than just what viewers/readers want.

I just wanted to say that this instance and the one in snowfall are prone to have different reactions. Snowfall is a show about the cocaine epidemic in the 80’s, no one expects their to be rape in a show like that so seeing that was a shock to many viewers, they weren’t laughing bc it was funny, they were just shocked, people laugh at fucked up things and if anything laughing is a trauma response and if I’m reading them right the they were just shocked and not prepared for something like that out of the blue, now in Heavenly delusion, Robin was already sketchy from the start and they all caught that, they already knew there was something about him that wasn’t right so they were already prepared for something bad to happen and when the rape came they were just reacting out of disappointment and disgust knowing that they were right, another thing is Robin is someone that is mentioned many times, he is shown as a close person to kiruko so he trusted Robin but Lenny and Karvel don’t know each other, aren’t even mentioned again in the show, doesn’t make rape right but when you grown attached and interested to a character like Robin who is constantly brought up and shown, you have certain expectations for them and in this case those expectations were thrown out the window. Main point is roshi, lupa and sheera aren’t laughing at rape or torture bc it’s funny, just bc it’s messed up and laughing is just smt ppl do when their nervous, doesn’t make them hypocrites or bad people.

I personally understand being angry at the character (Robin), or at the lack of content warning at the top of the episode, but I can't say I understand being upset with the writers/studio for the scene itself. From a cinematography aspect I think it was done as tastefully as such a scene can be done, and I'm ready to see the next episode. The writing has been good so far so I trust that this will not have been for nothing later in the show and will have consequences especially on both of our main characters' development.

what i know so far: 1. what happens at school is in the past. 2. children are immune to all diseases except for the disease that turns them into hiruko, so the school are making like superhumans. 3. mimihime and ushio(the girl with weird ears and the boy who is in love with her) are the boy who killed himself and the girl without limbs. 4. the other baby is a clone. 5. shino(the old lady) is looking for inmortality trying to switch her brain with those kids. 6. i think the doctor is the scientist who is taking care of tokio's babies because they have the same scar in the same place. 7. kona (the boy who have sex with tokyo) is the one that kills haruki(fmc) they look the same when mimihime has a vision of him becoming a hiruko. 8. the little girl with glasses who has the power to make illusions is the hiruko that looks like a cocoon in the parking area where haruki has an illusion being eaten i mean they have the same power.

you've seen half of it, after the next episode you'll have the full picture. And then after that, should you choose to read the manga, youll see how/when and if it even has any implications later on. But a lot of it is how horrific it is on its own, and then you take into account the ENTIRE scenario and how psychological abusive the mangaka makes it. Things like pushing kirukos head to the mirror and saying "watch what im about to do to your sister". He took all liberty to try to make it hurt as much as possible to the reader (which is probably the intent). It was extremely uncomfortable, especially in the manga. In my personal opinion as a manga reader, i dont think it was necessary especially to that degree but that is just my opinion.

Oh I wasn't trying to "normalize" it, I fully agree that in terms of how horrific it is, combined with it largely being a plot twist, that what happens in Heavenly Delusion is comparably just as emotionally distressing as Berserk. I meant *how* the sexual assaults are depicted (i.e. how they are constructed as scenes in the medium of comics) makes Heavenly Delusion seem "tame" in comparison to Berserk.

Also i'd argue this shit hits harder than berserk, just due to the nature of berzerk mentally preping you a bit. Very good analysis of the visual symbolism and editing in this episode. In addition to freedom/bondage, I think the tomatoes are also meant to symbolize like innocence/defilement, with how it splits open when the students leave the academy for the first time. Similarly when the students are walking through the interior of the walls we see red light flashing on-and-off, this directly paralleled with the sense of dread right after Kiruko comes out of the shower and walks down the hall. The audience is symbolically being given red warning signs flashing of something bad about to happen.

The jacket is just a fashionable jacket as far as we know. As for his age, Robin in 2039 is 27-28 years old. So he would have been 13 when the calamity happened.

The manga is only on a 1-month break (for June) so the mangaka can prepare the collection and publication of the 9th tankōbon volume of the manga. The next chapter 56 will be published at the end of July around the 24-25th (the series is published monthly FYI). And I personally have no doubt Robin will get his comeuppance eventually, but the manga still has plenty of story left (it just passed the half-way point last year).

The show was trying to say something with that montage, but I'm not quite sure what.

I picked up on a lot of symbolism and small details during my second time watching. Tomatoes are spherical shaped, just like the Earth. Perhaps the tomato we kept seeing is meant to serve as a metaphor for the "world" and how the characters view it / experience it? There's no question that the tomato is meant to symbolize something, but my specific interpretation could be wrong. Tomato Sightings: @14:32 @16:11 @19:27 @19:47 ~ The tomato looks fine during the first and second scenes. ~ The tomato cuts open ever so slightly during the third scene (when Mimihime and Co. reach the wall + when Kiruko reaches the bathroom door). The characters are approaching a huge potential change in their lives, but there's still time to back out if they don't walk through the wall / bathroom door. ~ The tomato is sliced about 3/4 of the way during the final tomato scene (when Mimihime and Co. exit the facility via the hole + when Kiruko enters through the bathroom door). The characters have gone through physical entrances bringing them to a new future. Their lives are about to change drastically, and there's no going back now. Mimihime and Co. finally experienced "outside of the outside" for the first time. During the first episode, Tokio was told by The Director that the outside world is basically hell, but for Mimihime and Co., what they're seeing feels more like heaven. Their first view of the world outside of Takahara does, admittedly, include a caged fence, but we focused on the trees, the cicada(?), and the sky. Mimihime, in particular, is fascinated by the sky "ceiling" as she calls it. Now, if you think back to Episode 8, seeing the sky one last time was her final request before death. It's very common for the sky to symbolize freedom, so while Mimihime and Co. are still within a cage (albeit a broken cage), they've never been more free. On the flip side, also in this episode was Haruki / Kiruko finally catching up with Robin, the person he's idolized for most of his life. Maru and Haruki have been searching for "heaven" all this time, but the series makes it clear that finding Robin is the most important thing in the world for Haruki. Their reunion takes place in a Takahara facility, which is supposedly heaven (Haruki even refers to it as heaven @20:19), but after Robin shows his true colors, Haruki finds himself in hell. Whether it's The Director trying to gain immortality by Orochimaru-ing her old lady brain into a younger body, or Robin literally committing an unforgivable act of evil, it's become clear that Takahara, no matter the time period, is an actual hell run by actual devils. Haruki was chained to the bed, which is literally the opposite of freedom in the world of symbology. Not only that, but Robin kept telling him to watch the mirror as his sister's body was defiled. Being grounded by handcuffs and forced to watch something when he wants to keep his eyes shut, Haruki has never been less free. Ironically, though he wants to close his eyes or avert his gaze now (and who can blame him), Haruki already did so earlier in the episode. During the shower scene @20:34, he literally closed his eyes during a monologue where he was shown slowly letting down his guard. "I was afraid. I was so scared. But it's fine now. *closes eyes* Now... I'll have Robin." After years of living alone in a harsh world, Haruki was allowing himself to be vulnerable. He completely lowered his guard just as Maru noticed that Haruki didn't have his gun. This episode has been tough on Haruki in multiple ways. In addition to the hell he experienced, there seems to be something going on with his gender identity. He literally filled out the visitor application twice. @9:11 - The first application says "Haruki Takehaya" and doesn't have a gender filled out. We later find out @24:13 that he crumbled up that application off screen before Robin got the phone call. @10:28 - The second application says "Kiruko" and has female circled for gender. This is the one he submitted to to the government worker before they called Robin. Most of the application is covered by Robin's face, which kinda symbolizes the fact that Robin is all he's thinking about. For some reason, Haruki felt that he had to be Kiruko to meet up with Robin. Anyways, yeah, this post is way longer than I expected it to be. If anyone reads the whole thing, I appreciate your time.

This was indeed a very heavy episode, and unfortunately the reality of what Robin did to Kiruko reflects an all too common occurrence of real-life, with the vast majority of sexual assaults in the real world being committed by someone close to the victims and survivors of sexual assault (e.g. friends and family). For those interested in reading along with the manga, Episode 12 adapted the remaining majority of chapter 31 (25/32 pages), nearly all of chapter 32 (26/28 pages), the last few pages of chapter 35 (5/28 pages), and all of chapter 36 minus its very last page (30/31 pages). This is equivalent to about 2.86 chapters of manga. Episode 13 will likely adapt the remaining last couple of pages of chapters 32 and 36, then all of chapters 33 and 34, and then the majority or all of chapter 37 (and a couple of scenes from chapter 38). In case it wasn’t clear from the previous episode with the labels on the cribs of the “twins”, Dr. Sawatari’s reaction in this episode to mixing up the babies hopefully makes the implication that one of the “twins” is in fact a clone much more explicit. Also this is something more readily obvious to Japanese-speaking audiences, but in Japanese, one of the meanings for the word “maru” is circle. So the significance that Sawatari drew a circle on the foot of one of Tokio’s “twins” should hopefully be more clear to people now. And Mimihime’s reaction to seeing the sky for the first time and falling back into the lap of Shiro provides further hints and foreshadowing to his and Mimihime’s future. The use of visual symbolism and foreshadowing was particularly impressive this episode. Kiruko’s uncertainty of which kanji for gender to fill out on their ID card/form (and later crumpling up of it) was an effective way to illustrate Kiruko’s internal struggles with identity and gender. Another interesting use of symbolic framing is utilized at the beginning of Kiruko’s first conversation with Robin, where Kiruko is viewed through the glass of a broken screen or tank, the center of the crack in the glass being overlayed with the back of Kiruko’s skull (those who recall Episode 3 may remember the hints that Kiriko may have been shot before the brain transplant occurred). While the reveal of Robin’s true character this episode is definitely meant to be a twist, it wasn’t completely out of the blue either. Besides the violent manner Robin was first introduced in episode 3, there is an extremely brief blink-and-miss-it shot in the same episode, specifically during the sequence where Haruki’s brain is being transplanted into Kiriko’s body, there is a flash of two images (distorted by static effects), of what is implied to be residual memories of Kiriko. One of those images is a point-of-view shot of Kiriko’s own hands intertwined with another more masculine hand while in a bed (a.k.a. basically the visual short hand that Kiriko was having sex with someone). So yeah, taking this episode into account there is evidence that Robin had unfortunately previously been in a sexual relationship with Kiriko (keep in mind, Robin was in his early-to-mid 20s during 2034, and Kiriko was only 15, so that would have been statutory rape on Robin’s part). *and before anyone tries to quote the “but the age of consent in Japan is 13” schtick to me, that’s just the national minimum age (and is currently in the process of being raised to be 16), every single prefecture in Japan has passed ordinances raising the age of consent to be 18. So besides just being ethically scuzzy, Robin being in a sexual relationship with Kiriko when she was only 15 would indeed be criminal in real-life Japan (though hopefully most people don’t need legal validation to recognize the serious ick factor of Robin having potentially been in a sexual relationship with a 15-year old). And if anyone is interested in starting the manga after this season is finished (it is currently planned to adapt the majority or all of tankōbon Volume 6 of the manga, which collects up to chapter 37), I personally would still recommend starting the manga from the beginning regardless, as in addition to the standard cutting of extra dialogue and scenes from the anime for run-time and cinematic pacing, the chapter titles and cover pages of the manga also play a role in experiencing the foreshadowing of the story that the anime can’t quite replicate (due to the inherent difference in mediums). The mangaka of Heavenly Delusion, Masakazu Ishiguro (who is active on Twitter), their most well known previous work is “And Yet the Town Moves” (also known as Soremachi), which was serialized from 2005-2016. They have also done a number of other single volume manga and short stories collections.
