If your power was to nullify magic, it's possible you wouldn't sense it even as your own magic, and it's possible his adopted dad never used magic at the same time as he tried to get Mash to do it (though obviously very unlikely) so he never realized. At this point it could be a learned helplessness/he has no need to try, so he doesn't bother attempting to activate his anti-magic in any of these situations. No need to act like a douche about the idea, even though I doubt it's the route the creator goes down.
