Olmar, like a lot of other characters I have noticed in this show seems to suffer from moral injury which can be hard to come back from and can lead to post-traumatic stress.

If that’s your takeaway from the first season, idk what to tell ya 🤷‍♂️ the main theme was clearly how awful war and killing is regardless of your motives. Sure, I don’t disagree that it is ‘entertaining’ to see fights in this anime, but it goes completely against the main themes of this show and the character development thorfinn has gone through.

Nah Canute more intelligent and nuanced than that. He prob sees Thorfinn as the same person he was when they last met but still sent him into slavery instead of having him killed. Thankfully we have Wulf there who I suspect will be an advocate of Thorifnn to at least speak to Canute.

I think canute is thinking about the kind of person Thorfinn was back then and the scar he gave him because he was the one who killed Askeladd. I also want to think that Canute doesn't want to revisit the past. I highly doubt its anything like what you guys said about him trying to act like its beneath a king to see Thorfinn or how Canute wants to see if he will somehow get to him to talk. The “trick to getting hit” is probably just falling with the punch, if you’re getting hit from getting punched from the left, move your head to the right with the punch. Instead of fighting back against the punch you minimise it’s impact by not resisting It’s common in a lot of fighting styles

Yeah in the manga, Floki even has an additional internal line of dialogue after he hears "Thorfinn son of Thors", he says "[it] can't be. It's a common enough name."

I feel like Canute would have been dumb to permit Thorfinn close, last time they met Thorfinn tried to stick a knife in him, so it'd be dumb to let a known assassin come up and talk to you. Seems like Thorfinn swallowing his pride and allowing himself to be hit instead of fighting back will show Canute he's dealing with a whole other person.

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode basically adapted all of chapters 94 and 95. Besides the standard shortening and trimming of dialogue, the most significant changes between the manga and the anime adaption was that while Thorfinn does decide to go try to talk to Canute in the manga too, it doesn’t happen in the manga until the end of chapter 94/beginning of chapter 95, and it occurs at the docks near Leif’s ship instead of at Arnheid’s grave. Also Leif doesn’t have an opportunity to protest Thorfinn’s decision in the manga, as in there Thorfinn just makes an excuse of having “forgotten something” before leaving Leif at the docks with the boat. In the manga Einar also leaves immediately with Thorfinn to go talk to Canute (i.e. he isn’t left by himself at Arnheid’s grave for a while) and thus in the manga Einar doesn’t have the conversation he has with Leif in this episode. Furthermore, the dialogue Einar has with Thorfinn when the latter decides to bet on himself in this episode occurs earlier in the manga, when Einar and Thorfinn are walking towards Canute’s encampment. Additionally, in case it was unclear in the subtitles, in the manga at least, Thorfinn says he only feels indebted to people like Pater and the old master Sverkel (Ketil is not included in the people Thorfinn feels indebted to). Thorfinn and Einar’s conversation is also a little longer in the manga where Thorfinn further elaborates to Einar why he can’t bring himself to forsake the farm in general, saying this: “Until just moments ago, I didn't want anything to do with this battle, either. But... …now that I've sworn to build a land of peace, that's changed I can't simply decide that as long as Vinland is peaceful everywhere else can burn.” Besides being cut for time, the above lines were also likely cut since they partially reference Thorfinn and Einar’s pledge to each other to build a peaceful land in Vinland, which in the anime is being moved to take place after Thorfinn meets Canute, compared to the manga where it happened before Thorfinn meeting up with Canute.
