Video #9 in the improv series!
Something interesting happened during this shoot. On the day we filmed this video, I was having trouble getting grounded in my body. The first filming of this piece was my definition of "crap improv." I was like, "Nef, hold the music, I'm not here yet." And there was this feeling that my Muse had not yet arrived in the studio. So, I "improvised," and tried something that sprang to mind to try to coax her out.
I had tossed a fan into my bag of tricks--it was a gift from someone, I can't remember whom, but it carries a lot of meaning, even though I can't remember why it was such a meaningful gift. Probably a comrade on International Whore's Day in New York City last year, when we were marching in blazing hot weather. Anyhoo, one of my teachers believes in a somatic trick of waking up the nervous system before dancing, so I grabbed my fan, returned to my chair, and gave Nef the thumbs up. As the music started, I ran the fan softly over all my body parts to see if I could ground my mind into my body.
I think it worked. You be the judge.
Enjoy!
Fondly,
Ernestine
