Extremely interesting. The risk of being cashiered out, changes my whole perception of duels. It’s a pretty rational economic motive. Your adversary is saying that your upper middle class nest egg ought to be seized.

I don’t know where the syphillis thing came from either bc contemporaries and historians all basically agree he lost it in a duel. there’s a 2003 book by William Boerst based on older research that goes into it

I always thought that "Lost their nose in a duel" was a euphemism/cover for "lost their nose to tertiary syphilis" . I have no idea how or from where this idea came into my head, so l won't comment on it's reality/frequency, but is there some basis in fact for that idea?
