Bonus Ep 20: The Silmarillion pt 1: In the Beginning

hello patrons and welcome to our first episode on JRR Tolkien's cult classic bit of world building, The Silmarillion. this episode is all about introducing you to Tolkien and his son, Christopher, who edited and published the book posthumously after his father's death. we also discuss the making of the book, the huge amount of editorial work that went into it, the editorial mistakes that Christopher made, the shape of the world, and more! next episode, we will get into the book itself, but in the meantime, enjoy this introduction and know that we'll be back with part 2 next month!

also, please sign up for the discord if you haven't already. we've got over 100 members right now but would love more! thanks so much!

Not related to the Silmarillion, haven’t listened yet! Just watched this you tube video about historical misconceptions. Overall seems pretty good. Two things stood out though, around the 6 minute mark talks about swearing in the past. He says “Fuck and shit can’t be swear words in societies where defecation and sex were pseudo-public activities, as they were in the Middle Ages”. Is this correct? Also has a really weird take on European exploitation of Africa at the 11 min mark. https://youtu.be/cjkJ6YuEoE4
