Ep. 23: The Silk Road - Discussion Thread
Added 2021-07-09 18:39:03 +0000 UTCFriends! Apologies that there hasn't been much activity on the page recently. I (Luke) have been dealing with a sick kid and/or been sick myself for the last 2 weeks. We're both fine now, just getting back into the swing of things. Anyway, please use this thread for discussions on our latest episode on The Silk Road. Let us know your thoughts or any questions you might have!

2021-07-23 07:57:37 +0000 UTCA couple questions: 1. What did Medieval people think about penis size? I know modern ideas about penis size as a symbol of masculinity and sexual prowess haven't existed forever, which is why modern observers are often not impressed by the genitals depicted on old statues. I would guess that the phallic obsession of modern society comes from Victorian perverts but what did people in the middle ages think? 2. How tolerant were Medieval people of homosexuality in borderline cases and special circumstances? There were male only spaces like monasteries and I assume there were ships at sea, remote work camps, armies on campaign, etc. You've mentioned in the past that prostitution was common, but in cases where prostitutes weren't available did people make exceptions on prohibitions against homosexuality? Would they have perceived oral or manual sex as being significantly less transgressive than anal sex (even though both are technically sodomy)? What did they think about sexual experimentation among young people? Did the older ideas about homosexuality where its acceptable as long as there is a social hierarchy or age difference persist into the Medieval period in any way?
