London performance

When I was in the UK last month, Matt Parker invited me to join a monthly show that he (along with Helen Arney and Steve Mould) put on called "An Evening of Unnecessary Detail".  It's a sort of a comedy night for nerds, but they emphasized to me that when they have on guest speakers, especially academics, any kind of entertaining talk will do, and that the audience would often prefers something thought-provoking to someone trying to force jokes.

I started  to get a feel for what kind of show this was when I met up with them earlier that day.  As they were catching up on how the previous month's show had gone, Helen brought up how one guy spent his whole routine talking about the difference between tubes and pipes, and everyone else in the room literally gasps and says "oooh, that sounds good."  Another was evidently all about the best kinds of pencils.  We just don't get shows like this in the US.

They just sent me the recording of my contribution, and while it's not something I plan to publish more broadly, I though I'd share it with you.  It's...very different from the usual videos.

I rewatched this 1 year later and it's still so so brilliant.

Oh my, that was wonderful! (I finally had a chance to watch it.)

Shaeeyaa

Grant performing a mathematical parody of Hallelujah was absolutely not one of the things I expected to gain access to when I signed up as a patron... definitely not complaining though!

I was so lucky to catch this live in person and so glad there is a recoding! Laughed a lot that night.

Honestly, this video alone was the price of signing up for the Patreon!

Benjamin Kirk

this is so good I am really happy I am a patron

Great stuff. Maths jokes are the best 😎

that was a great song!

I thought I knew where this video was going. NOPE! What a delight! "...but they emphasized to me that when they have on guest speakers, especially academics, any kind of entertaining talk will do," oh how you baited us.

wow, I so want a show like that in my city. nice work, thanks for sharing

Jake Brownson

Just amazing, I can't find words to say how great you are!

Jorge Sinde

Tears of joy :') I truly believe such performances will make more people comfortable with their nerdiness and express themselves in an artistic manner.

Absolutely brilliant!

Piling on with the peer pressure for you to share this more broadly. This was fantastic!

Brian Michalowski

Very enjoyable. I must be a nerd too lol

Awesome work, Grant. Thanks for sharing it with us.

Steve Muench

Brilliant :) I really enjoyed that performance -- thank you for sharing!

This was fantastic! While I agree it doesn't fit on the main channel you should definitely publish this somewhere! It would be such a shame if more people didn't see this!

Grason Cheydleur

who'd have guessed: Another stereotypical pattern broken, the man's a mathematician AND a musician :)

Chris Jennings

Felt my heart almost popped out of my chest from laughter... no wonder some people do literally die laughing. From now on, I think I'll need to watch out from "joy overdose" watching your work.

MedNait

I hate to echo everyone else, but that was amazing! I would *love* to see more of these kinds of videos. Both this and your TEDX lecture, while completely different, are proof that you are an amazing performer, and you should totally continue in this vein in addition to your regular videos. Btw, why aren't you planning to share this video more broadly? I badly want to share this with other people :)

Edan Maor

Thanks! I may do a better-recorded version at some point. It's nice to have a live audience, though, so I'd want to recreate that too somehow.

3blue1brown

Next time indeed. I love that city.

3blue1brown

More collaborations to come! Just you wait...

3blue1brown

It was a _very_ warm audience. Matt Parker does his job well :)

3blue1brown

Thanks! I'll let you know if I make more.

3blue1brown

I think if I refine it and do more live performance type things, I'd for sure post them either to the main channel or a second one.

I heard there was a pattern of chords, That split the circle, it starts 1, 2, 4, N points seem to cut in powers of 2, yeah. It goes on like this, with the 4th and the 5th. But something’s odd, when you add a 6th. It cuts in thirty-one, patterns fool ya’ How they fool ya’, how they fool ya’ How they fool ya’, how they foo-ooo-ool ya’ When your faith is strong, you still need proof, What seems natural to guess, can lead to a goof. Each integral on the left is pi over two, yeah. You’d think it’s true for the next, which is fair, Like a joke we’ve shown, that it’s off by a hair It’s a subtle slip, but it’s true the pattern fooled ya’ (Chorus) Take a prime, convert to base 4, Then read those digits as you’d have before. One prime gives a new prime with this rule, yeah. Or does it though, you’ll eventually find, New primes are not so simply designed, Patterns hold, and then they’re broken, how they fool ya’ (Chorus)

That was very good! Grant you are extremely talented

That was great.

One day I may make a video. This post does a great job: https://johncarlosbaez.wordpress.com/2018/09/20/patterns-that-eventually-fail/

3blue1brown

Perhaps one day, with a cleaner version.

3blue1brown

Disappointed that Spotify turns up zero hits for "How They Fool Ya"

Ok, what the heck is up with this sin(x)/x integral? Proof that we are living in a simulation running on a machine lacking the necessary precision to yield the correct result? Seriously, can anyone point me to a resource explaining this? :)

Loved it!

Jacob Dyer

That was hilarious!

This is fantastic! Please please turn the song into a regular video.

That was amazing! If this song was on iTunes, I would probably buy it.

gutted i missed this

Man I love matt parker

That was a really funny lecture! Congrats!!

Nèstor Abad Viñas

I think you are ready for America Got Talent. Not sure America is ready for you, though.

and another song that will never be the same...

white beard geek

Funny presentation and interesting problems!

This is absolutely the best thing I've seen in ages. THANK YOU so much for sharing :)

Matt Godbolt

Thank you Grant! This brought me joy today. There's a beautiful chaos to nature that our modern conveniences often obscure. At times it's scary realizing just how tenuous our existence really is--and then again we can sing, laugh, and ask `how'd it fool ya?`

Holy shit! You're good!! I have tears in my eyes!

LOL, really I was laughing out loud

Ah sorry I missed it! Next time you're in London then!

Wah?! A collab with Matt Parker? This is so cool!

Magnasium

I love this! People who do both humour and maths this well are hard to come by, so it’s a real treat to watch you perform and to see you collaborate with Matt 😄

Dan Kinch

You forgot to close your top button! First good laugh I have had in weeks. Thanks. We all need it.

The best thing I've seen all year! So great.

Steve

Fantastic!

Loved it!

Reginald Carey

This is awesome!

😂👍🏻

Thank you for uploading this. I really enjoyed it on the night, now I can show it to my friends that were unable to attend! :)

That was fantastic!

You're amazing, Grant! Beautiful presentation!

Or change the "broke through" to "made"

Thank you! It broke through a welcome break through the social isolation barrier.

That was brilliant. I hope we get to see you do a Netflix special some day!

Grant, this is just awesome. You're a better comedian than many full-time comedians!

Marvelous, Grant! You hit the spirit of the show perfectly, and the buildup was impeccable. The reaction of the audience shows they agree.

Dragi Raos

Well done old chap!

RAD Donato

Cool. I sometimes go to the Spoken Nerd - I wasn't at this one. Shame I missed it.

Fun extra video, thanks for sharing!

koen smidt

This was the perfect start of my day... Interesting, funny and an impressive performance! (And yes please, I think it would be a good idea to make a version with slightly better audio but also with the slides/illustrations added for readability.)

Thanks! I'm actually considering recording a better audio version of this, and posting it more broadly, maybe writing a couple more verses. This was a fun event to try it out at, though.

3blue1brown

That was an awesome performance. To be honest I believed the Leonard Cohen story for a brief moment which is quite embarrassing. I think you should consider uploading the video to your main channel. I think something different every once in a while is good. it's very much on topic with your channel and you are showing a geometric puzzle. The first video I watched on your channel was: "Tattoos on Math", even though I am a math enthusiast and not at all interested in tattoos. I thought the connection was intriguing and the thumbnail clearly showed it wasn't about someone just getting a math tattoo.

Great song!

Daniel Armesto

Truly entertaining! Thanks

Loved it!

Bradley Sampson

Grant- this is AWESOME. It’s so rare to see genuine nerdy comedy done so well. I would DEFINITELY support making videos in this vain (maybe as a second channel, or maybe as a perk for a higher Patreon tier?). Anyways, made my night 👍🏻

That was hilarious! You have fantastic comedic timing. Thanks for sharing.

Agreed!!

Thanks also for that epidemic simulation video, which I just watched. Now I know better how to estimate when a Nerdnite event might happen again, and with a life audience, like you had in London. Might take a while, I guess, and definitely not by Easter ;-)

That was _very_ funny and I'm happy you shared it! I second the second channel suggestion :)

Grant, thanks for sharing! "Smashing!" Nice to see your artistic and entertainer side. (You might have heard of the "Nerdnite" events, one in Oakland and one in San Jose. Used to be about monthly, now of course victims of that damn virus too. Hope to be able to go to one of their events again when this is over, and maybe see you perform there?)

Am I the only one going completely crazy over understanding why those fake patterns emerge? That integral thing just blew my mind. I'm not sleeping tonight.

Nicolas Berube

Even if I hadn't seen any of your dozens of previous uploads, this one would make all my contributions worth it. Too bad the microphone wasn't great, definitely consider adding lyrics for at least the song.

Please start a second channel with these type of comedy math videos

We need the lyrics for that song.
