Adjust the amount to your liking. Done.
Here's a quick example of what it can do:

This allows you to change the blend modes & apply effects that change the layer without removing the layer style.
In general this helps a lot with keeping your projects non destructive and easier to adjust in the later phases - not just with layer styles.
Add an empty group.
Drag your layer into to the group.
Apply the layer style to the group instead of the original layer.
This will help you with working on the base layer or working with multiple objects at once without having to apply the effect to the original layers.
If you use two groups you can also easily see the base layers look without the style - simply by draging the sub group out of the group that has the style applied.
or
Add an empty group.
Drag your layer into to the group.
Apply layer modes or live-effects to the group instead.
The group will allow you to change blend modes and apply effects to the layer with styles on specifically.
This can also be done within the style settings though.
Using two layer styles on the same layers.
Choose a layer of your liking.
Add that layer into an empty group.
Add layer styles to both the original layer and the group. (Or use 2 groups)
If you want an even less destructive workflow or you want to get even more creative:
- Simply repeat the process by adding aditional groups.
Change the layer mode of the top style so it overlays the bottom style
- You can also duplicate your base and use two different styles and overlay the top one if you dont want to affect the size of the object more than needed.
Here's an example of what it can do:

Contour curves can dramatically change the look of your shadows, lights and of course contours.
Open the layer style pannel
Click on any setting that has curves (Usually a square with a white curve)
Change the curve to create unique effects (Great for metallic looks)
Here's an example of what it can do:

My "always-on" setting. This is a setting is specific to the contour pannel.
It helps to smoothen out any rendering issues and make the style you're using look more clean.
Blend modes can help significantly with making your designs look more as one piece and increase realism.
Blend modes can be changed by clicking on the panel that usually shows "normal"
This will also change the blend mode in the layer tab
