His sister was betrayed by her lover who was a human. So he doesn't trust anyone especially humans and also hates them since his sister died because of her human lover who reported her. I think that's why he had such a change of character. And after Nishio got injured by Kaneki, it was Kimi who stayed and was willing to give her life to Nishio that made him realize that there was someone he could trust.

Yes, it diverts from the manga, but it does it's own plotline justice, and has stellar fights to go alongside it. Even better it looks like youre watching the uncensored version, which will come into play later in the show :) Enjoy Tokyo Ghoul while it lasts!
