Maybe nobody's broken it down yet so I'll do that for you. There are three classes of Devil Fruits, Zoan, Logia and Paramycia. Zoan-types are all Animal related and typically have three forms, their normal form that they look like without the Devil Fruit, their Beast Form and a Hybrid form of the previous two. Logia-types all have to do with naturally occurring substances (like Ace's Fire, Crocodile's sand or Smoker's smoke). Their body becomes made of that material and makes them virtually indestructible unless certain conditions are met. Paramycia-types are basically any DF that doesn't fall under the previous two categories and is typically considered the weakest class, though the strength usually increases or decreases depending on the user's imagination and how they choose to use it. It really depends on what Pell says in the official version. We would need to find a reliable translation because I read one where the sentence was translated as: "there are only 5 known types of Avis Avis, the Fruit that allows you to fly". In any case it wouldn't be a lie from Oda but from Pell 😁

Crocodile is based off of Captain Hook. The thing with Captain Hook is that he was always chased around by a Crocodile. I believe all the crocodiles, and his name is just a reference to this, but i could be wrong

Crocodile name + design is a reference to Captain Hook from Peter Pan. Crocodile has a hook like Captain hook & what killed captain hook was a Crocodile/Alligator which is how he got his name. Oda loves his references & takes alot of inspiration from historical figures, fictional, popular characters from TV/movies pop culture. Like how Usopp is based on Pinocio with the long nose + lying. Usopp name is a mix of Uso (lie in Japanese) + Aesopp (famous Greek storyteller who told fables/lies). Usopp story arc being based on the boy who cried wolf. Chopper is based on Rudolph rednose raindeer (blue nose), also myth of Bigfoot/Sasquatch/Yeti. Sanji based on Steve Buscemi character Mr Pink from Reservoir dogs. Villains like Dracule Mihawk name + design is based off Dracula & a Spanish conquistadors. Captain Kuro design is based on Edward Scissor hands. Also Oda uses real life pirates as inspiration like Blackbeard. There's so many more & there will be even more in future episodes. Oda does his homework & can suprise with some of his references considering he's been writing One piece since he was a teenager.

This VIZ translation of the manga just says that "flying devil fruits are rare" It doesn't give a specific number but I don't think its a retcon, I just think its more specific than it seems. Its also a way to remove the idea from the readers head that bird or flying devil fruit users are going to be prevalent. It sets the world as a more grounded fighting/adventure that way we cant just fly anywhere we want and means of transportation are more important. It also sets up people with the ability to fly as that much more intimidating.

Yeah, I thought of it as 5 models of the bird-bird fruit but I have no idea what the original translation was or what the line from the manga was. In reality it may just be something that Oda retconned about DF. Because the original ending was meant to be after the Alabasta arc, he wouldnt have needed as many unique fruit.

I believe the line about devil fruit types with flight meant that there are only 5 Zoan fruits that are flying type creatures. A lot of fruits could allow the user to fly, Luffy for example could probably use his arms to stretch the sides of his torso to make flying squirrel-esque wings and use them to fly. So it makes more sense for him to specifically be referring to Zoan types that are creatures with the innate ability to fly like birds.

@Various "Training arc" is another thing used in most anime but saying something occurs before or after a training arc is still a subtle spoiler. Especially if you're using it to divide a 1,000 episode series, it certainly puts some emphasis on a future event
