y'know, going back about how kaie tried to warn lena that she wasn't cut out to be a handler, lena has proven her mental fortitude is much stronger than any of them would have thought in the end. remember that all previous spearhead handlers straight up quit or went insane from hearing the voices, and those handlers didn't even see the 86 as humans or worth thinking about. lena shares a much closer bond to the 86, and even heard kaie's remnants, who she had started developing a fairly good dynamic with. even though it's obvious that this realization about the new-type legion has given her much trauma (ptsd symptoms even), she is still determined to continue with spearhead. major props to the major!

Most Mecha genre anime have references about wars in reality. 86 being one of them, there are also other Mecha anime such as Patlabor and the Gundam Series. Just the Gundam Series itself, there are so many of them such as Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans, Gundam SEED, Gundam 00, Gundam Wing, Zeta Gundam etc that touches on war.

The legend that directed this anime is Toshimasa Ishii. Even more unbelievable, this is his first full blown anime that he directed. Everything he did before was only an episode or 2 from a few anime. I'll keep an eye out for any of his future works.

Whenever in previous episodes they've talked about the discrimination or prejudice, there's been an angle of Anju's back, always hinting at what she's been through and hiding with her hair. You can frame by frame it from around 12:23 and get a pretty good idea of what her scar says.
