I always had a gripe about Asuma. He blows the smoke giving time for Hidan to walk into the ritual circle. Same as previously when he fights Itachi and Kisame. I fully agree when you two say he should of waited for backup. The whole point of the mission was to scout the Akatsuki but instead they fight the moment they see Hidan and Kisame.

That's why it's shocking, horrifying to witness the heroes met such a twisted demise. I remember feeling so horrible for Shikamaru. One thing is for a lvoed one to die, another is for them to die in front of you with you being unable to help them. Naruto doesnt have many deaths, which makes the ones that arrive always hit so hard, coz the show is about hope and overcoming, so in those times when it just doesnt go that way - it feels so much worse.

Crazy thing is. They didn’t just send WHOEVER to go after the akatsuki. That was the 3rd Hokage’s Elite Jonin son and Shikamaru the smartest ninja in the village (besides his dad). Although in their defense, Hidan has a broken ability and would probably be killed by weaker characters than Izumo and Kotetsu (the other 2 chunin) without his crazy voodoo abilities.

I don't think you understand as much about character scaling as you think you do. Chiyo didn't beat Sasori by being OP or even overall stronger than him, she beat him because she was his grandmother, hence she knew his abilities and weaknesses. She was suited to fight Sasori, and Sasori only.

Just put yourself in Asuma shoes. He's Platoon leader, son of the 3rd Hokage, best friend just died, his star pupil is beside, his love is waiting on him. That moment of his with a worried face saying desperately exclaiming how he's doing everything he can despite knowing the situation he's in fighting 2 Akatsuki with no backup. Keep in mind he witnessed first hand 2 Akatsuki's strength back against Kisame and Itachi. He knows how high the danger is. His situation is truly tough to watch...
