Japanese school restarts in the beginning of September after August's summer vacation, when real-life kids see each other again after not having seen each other over the break, and get to see who went on cool beach trips and who stayed indoors. So, yes, these were just tans. strong tans lol. Also you can see there's summer/beach art on the whiteboard for episode 44's omake.
