You already saw the second season and you know why Subaru loves Emilia. Their fate was to be together from the start since episode one since u saw another Subaru dying. It doesn't matter how manny women like him cuz he will always love Emilia. They are predestinated to be together. Is like a law of the universe that must happen. All the other girls are side characters in his love story . And is not like you couldn't see it coming. He liked he from the start and he won't change just because you the viewer want it. I know Rem saw that too. Behind the running part she knew that no matter if they would be together or not Subaru will still love Emilia more. That's why she rejected his offer since it wasn't true love for her. Plus for some reason she loves more the Subaru that Loves Emilia then the Subaru that Loves her. She said it too.. Plus ppl hate on Subaru but he liked Emilia from the start and he was faithful to that choice. Just because someone likes u doesn't mean you should like them back. How would you feel as a person knowing you dedicated your love to someone and then someone that you ain't interested in , comes and declare their love for you. It would not be your fault for rejecting them knowing that you love someone else. Cuz in your eyes the person who you start to love from the start and try to be with is the most important person for you. Now imagine that someone from outside comes and judge you based on your choice. Don't listen to them. Is your choice not theirs to make. I think everyone should follow their heart. You don't have to accept someone love just cuz they declare it. If they are not the person you seek you're not obligated to accept anything. I think that from Subaru's lonely, former shut-in perspective, he comes across as desperate for romance (initially); his over-the-top flirting with Emilia acts as a singular output for these pent up feelings. I think choosing Emilia either shows great personal development for Subaru. He disregards his former wanting of romantic status, gestures, and actions in favor of choosing the right person which should be respected. It's also loyal to see things through with Emilia regardless, when he's presented with everything his former, "greedy" self wanted. Lastly, I don't think Rem would have wanted to be chosen as a desperate escapism and still intends to vie for his affection, like when she sees even Patrasche as a romantic rival. Well I do not want to compare Rem and Emilia but to be fair, regarding of the 'love' here, you do not have to love someone just because he/she loves you, that is your own choice to choose, even the reason might seems to be childish to others. Exactly my thoughts. While Rem's character development is admirable, fact remains that she killed him mercilessly in his previous life. IMO even if it was a misunderstanding, ending up being friends with Rem is already more than she can ask for (if only she knew what she did but she won't of course). Emilia on the other hand helped Subaru at the cost of (almost) losing the item stole by Felt. Not only that, she helped him knowingly or unknowingly countless times too. I somehow respect Subaru for still choosing Emilia after everything Rem said. It just shows his feelings towards Emilia is the real deal. In this episode literally every single Rem fan ignore that she literally has killed and tortured Subaru twice in his life redo's. Emilia has never done anything to Subaru in any of his lifetimes, so it's no wonder she is still his number 1 girl. Another thing in episode 18 that I have understood is that in the novel he says that he loves Rem, but his choice is Emilia. So he confesses to Rem that he does love her, but he wants to go to Emilia. So, this is just my own thoughts on the matter, of course, but I think the reason Rem doesn't just run away with Subaru is because it would be a life and relationship built on a lie. She is fully aware that she will never be able to become number one in his mind and so instead of start something fake that they both will regret for the rest of their lives, she opts to help him get what both of them know he wants for real. Which is strong-willed of her and absolutely the right choice to make, at least in my opinion.

The thing people confuse with this show when it comes to moments like this if the show makes you talk and feel this many different emotions to keep you hooked the writing is working and it's good. The thing about the scene at the capital in the castle is that at that moment Subaru still had in mine that this is a game/a fantasy world where HE is the MC and so he has a big part to play in or whatever. He had yet to realize that he is just a random, maybe even less than that, in a world with people with far more impact and power than him, and with dangers that he cannot face with his normal human strenght. That’s true, it’s only the first season so characters can get really fleshed out in later seasons. When I first watched this show, I was like you guys and I was upset he didn’t choose Rem. On the rewatch though, it’s different. Now I’m glad that Subaru didn’t choose to lead Rem on and he was honest with her. If he truly loves Emilia, it wouldn’t be fair to Rem for Subaru to make her be his 2nd choice. Rem deserves better than being the silver medal.

I'm not going to rehash Emilia or Rem's good qualities since others have already done it. I will say this: Emilia makes Subaru a better person. Or rather, Subaru's love for Emilia makes him a better person. Everything he has done on that world has stemmed from his desire to be better/"good enough" for Emilia and that is the person that Rem is in love with. Choosing Rem isn't so much settling as it is running AWAY from all that pain that comes from growing as a person. Also she helped him, saved his live multiple times by healing him, comforted him etc. So it isn't fair to say Subaru loves her just because of him being superficial. To be fair it feels painful to witness a confession as perfect as Rems and the rejection, but I think for him it was the right choice. Rem wanted him to not run away and that included him staying the hardliner he is. Which is part of what Rem loves about him. Rem has recieved so much love and care from Subaru in all the lives he has spent. He has died for her too on multiple occations, to say Rem doesn't recieve love is quite and understatement. Its easy to feel that Rem and Subaru should be together after everything. But one doesn't simply start loving someone else completely. They would leave behind the Subaru she loves most. Even after that whole ordeal Subaru could only think about Emilia. Rem only wanted to help Subaru after he helped her. But in my opinion it was the right choice. The fact that this episode has so big of am emotional impact makes it so amazing of an episode and done its job perfectly. Choosing Rem would just be an escape from everything. Emilia and Ram would die if he did so.. Emilia has saved Subarus life multiple times and saved him when she didn't really know who he was. In Subaru's defense: He met Emilia first, He's loyal to Emilia, Emilia is nice to everyone and selfless even to a complete stranger she just met, even to someone that was being mean to her, she stop and saved Subaru in the beginning even after someone just stole her insignia(The thing that qualify her thrown candidate), she heals Subaru fatal injuries many times even after they just had a broke up argument, that's what Subaru love about Emilia. ReZero in some ways helped save my life, I resonate with pretty much everything Subaru says in this episode. I've spent 9 years in 3 long-term relationships, 1.5 years, 4.5 years and the most recent being 3 years that ended last year. I believed my last ex to be my "Rem", until like the other 2 in the last month of dating she changed her whole personality, cheated and I ended it. I think characters like Rem have ruined me though, makes me feel like I want someone who could look at me that way, my most recent ex genuinely did for 3 years then changed, but as I'm getting older (I'm mid-20s now) I just doubt I'd ever find that kind of person anymore. At least I got the animoo's to keep me company I guess... LUL

I'm surprised that Ron was able to understand what the author is trying to convey in this episode, I'm proud of you Ron! At the end when you said that "its almost as if Rem is in love with Subaru because Subaru is not in love with her" and "Rem knew that if she accepted his proposal, that wouldn't be the real Subaru that she fell in love with", Subaru realized that at the moment too, which was why he said "I love Emilia" and got back on track on what he was supposed to do in the first place instead of giving up and running away with Rem. I know it sucks to see this, I'm team Rem too, but hopefully you guys see that its Rem who chose this, and not Subaru. If it makes you feel better, in the official light novel, it is indicated that Subaru loves Rem too. Also, if you are interested, the author made a story about what would have happened if Subaru made certain important choices that are different from the main story. It is called Re:Zero If stories and every story corresponds to a sin. This would be the "Sloth" route if Subaru decides to give up and run away with Rem.

He's treating her as an escape, a second option which is unfair to him and Rem. Everyone puts themselves in Subaru's shoes, but think about how Rem feels. I watched the first season of re zero years ago and my opinion about episode 18 didnt change a bit. Every single man on the planet with a working head on his shoulders would have chosen rem over emilia. I completely understand your guys' reaction to Subaru not choosing Rem, but I think the harsh reality is that he fell in love with Emilia before ever getting to know Rem and because his feelings for Emilia are very real, he did the right thing by telling Rem the truth. You guys are right to think that she would not be happy being with the Subaru who gave up. Also, now that you guys have gotten to EP 18, I highly recommend checking out Requiem of Silence from the Re:Zero OST. It is the track plays at the end of EP 15 after we are introduced to Betelguese. A fun fact is that the director was so impressed by the track when he heard it that he actually timed the scene in such a way that the whole track could play out in the episode. I think it really illustrates the tragedy that took place in such a beautiful way. Also, I hope you check the song "Wishing". It is the song that plays during the second half of Subaru's conversation with Rem in this latest episode and is actually sung by Rem's VA. Try to find a video with the translation for the lyrics because they are very beautiful.

You can't help the fact that you love somebody. Subaru loves Emilia, almost to the point of obsession at times. It's what keeps him from going totally insane, having someone or something to latch onto. There's also the fact that Rem has killed him, more than once, and also tortured him. If someone told you to just stop loving the person you love, and instead love another person they feel is better for you, would you just give up on your love and just settle for this other person? I've also been in Rem's situation some times, only the loving somebody but needing to cheer them up and push them towards who they love part. If you truly love someone, making them happy will also make you happy, even if it is bittersweet at the moment. Rem cares about Subaru's happiness, not who he loves. Not forcing him to love her by taking advantage of the fact that he's broken.

I do like characters having internal struggles cuz it can build their character later on but Subaru to me just felt so severely flawed and the bad decisions he made due to his irrational way of handling things just made it very frustrating. I did finish season 1 so I do know he becomes tolerable and cooler but the reason why I dropped the show and stopped at season 1 was because of a spoiler from season 2. First time watching this, I was only focused on subaru's development because he was going through a lot. Especially for a kid who did nothing but slack off in his previous life, to give so much effort for something and someone, to just experience some gruesome deaths over and over. It may seem like an OP power to just never die, but remember that he still feels pain and experience some psychological torture. dont feel bad for clowning on Subaru this episode, he kind of deserved it. though agreeing to love Rem just because he is broken and has given up would have been bad as well. he has his reasons for loving Emilia but unfortunately Emilia hasn't had the most chances to shine yet. Rem is great though. but the real main point of their talk was to snap Subaru out of his depression. he was becoming more and more insane with each loop and he had finally given up and Rem recognized he had given up but gave him the boost to keep going by telling him he should be more confident in himself. Subaru has a lot of insecurities that he expressed and even more. he said that before he joined up with them he was a loser who did nothing and that he hated himself. he has a lot of growing as a character to go to think better of himself and care more and Rem gave him a good slap in the right direction to feeling so. something to remember, Rem has killed Subaru before. Emilia has not ever tried to hurt him and has been nice to him every loop and was the first to save him when he came to a new world. there are some merits to his love for Emilia. its a hard choice but he went with his first love. There is a side story re:IF where he does indeed run away with Rem and live out his life and they have children. and it doesnt go as well as you may think, by doing so. everybody he left behind will die. its worth checking out the IF stories as they are really cool what if stories written by the author himself. they may contain some light spoilers on future characters we wont meet for a long time.

Both y’alls reaction were the same as mine before. When i was just a rookie on watching anime and all I’ve watched were the big three (OP, Bleach, and Naruto). I couldn’t quite get why even throughout the show Subaru still chose Emilia. …Then in time when i caught up with this show. I realized that this show shows a lot different than any isekais. I started putting myself in Subarus shoes not just mentally, but emotionally. How I’ve hated myself before, how I was lazying around, and so on. I started seeing this show into a whole turn around. I think almost everyone felt the same way you guys did (including me) but in time and hopefully soon. You guys will come to understand. And haha as i read in the comments. Once when i was a kid i watched a movie, a drama or smth. There was the MC, who knew a certain woman and was in love with her, but he couldn't get her, she was like married or smth. Then he met a friend of that woman i believe, and they had some chemistry between them, they eventually married. Again haven't seen the reaction yet but judging by the description I can guess lol. If you're upset about subaru for saying that he loves Emilia it's 100% legitimate and a lot of people felt like that too. My opinion on that though is that it just make senses that subaru doesn't fall in love of rem, he loves emilia and it wouldn't make sense for him to not love her all of a sudden. When you love someone that person goes above everyone else. In real life it's actually pretty dishonest to just go into a relationship with someone just because that person likes you, true love is more than that imo Just keep in mind that between arc 2 and arc 3 (after they killed the witchfiends and before they went to the capital) there was a timeskip of a whole month, so emilia and subaru actually a more profound relationship than what is shown in the series, 1 month with someone you love is a lot and he had time to develop even more feeling for her. Anyways, time to watch the reaction now :D thanks for the upload !

Look at it this way: 1) Emilia is the only person in this world that has been truly nice to Subaru in basically EVERY loop. In the first loop she saved his life. He was alone in the world and she rescued him, and it was love at first sight. You can’t forget that while Subaru cares about Rem, she DID kill him in 2 loops. 2) Ron, imagine you had love at first sight for Michelle but Michelle was unsure of her feelings for you (not going into much detail bc spoilers). Now imagine another girl came into the picture that you cared about and loved you back. Would you leave Michelle for the other girl just because she likes you too, or would you stay loyal to your feelings?

Someone being in love with you doesn't mean you're beholden to be with them. Good on Subaru for being honest with her and telling her how he feels, and Rem takes it the right way.
