The version on the left is only slightly modified from what's in the PDF, while the version of the right is how it was originally written (minus a 4th panel, that would have had Candice standing stunned in the middle of a panoramic view of the diner, with customers on both sides staring at her).
While I still like the original version, it doesn't really work. Candice would have done the math a long time ago, and figured out that she's only around 15-16 years younger than her mother, so she wouldn't want to give Mercy that kind of opening. It'd also be the sort of scandal that a rich, affluent family like hers would do their best to hide.
Finding out that the woman she thought was her sister is actually her real mother, though? That's the bigger bombshell, I think.
